So I've been doing some online research on tail bags and the cheapest one I've found costs something like US$70.

I'm thinking of getting hold of a durable bag and then sewing straps onto the thing. The straps can then be fixed tightly under the seat, and with any luck when the seat snaps into place the bag won't shift around.

Has anybody tried making their own tail bag?

If you do, try to make it double stitching. Let the sewing machine go through the seams again.

Also, for straps, I had once tried using bungee cords, works well for me. Velcro around your seat does also makes sense. Lastly, do ensure that the straps are not touching any heated parts such as the exhaust and any paintwork damage that the straps might cause!

For waterproofing, try spraying some waterproofing product such as 303 High Tech Fabric, this product will work better with waterproof or water-resistant materials.

Good luck!

Thanks, those are some useful suggestions.

I've thought of using bungee cords, but they're really easy to cut through. I'm hoping to be able to just leave the tail bag on the bike when I park in safer areas.

As for the sewing bit, one problem is that the material of the straps or bag might be too thick to just run a sewing machine needle over. Also, even double-stitching might not be enough to securely fasten the straps to the bag.

Waterproofing will definitely help. Putting the entire tail bag into a big ziploc bag and cutting out some holes for the straps to go through might also help to reduce moisture in the event of rain.

Will let you guys know if I succeed.

Not to be a dampener but in britain there have cases of serious injury and even death when improperly secured or improperly designed tail bags get caught in vital moving parts like chain, tires or rim causing rider to lose control and crash. And these are 'proper' tail bags. Generally, reputable brand tail bags, properly secured according to instructions and for bikes they are designed for are safe. But I personally would never use a home design, i'd at most bungee small items like raincoat. But to each his own.

It's true: it's more fun to ride a slow bike fast than to ride a fast bike slow. Admittedly, though... It is MOST fun to ride a fast bike fast!
