Hello everyone. I passed my test in early april & bought 2nd hand sp last week. Riding it has been very enjoyable experience. Good acceleration & very potent brakes!

 

But just wanna ask, is it normal for the bike to sometimes be jammed/stuck in 2nd gear? On 2 occasions i couldnt change to 3rd gear for little awhile. After some struggle, I would be able to get 3rd & things would be smooth after that.

 

1st time it happened, i clutch in & kick down to 1st again & kick up to 2nd & then try 3rd & it worked. 2nd occasion it didnt, so i kicked down to 1st again & tried to pump clutch but resulted in engine braking in 5k revs. But after that i managed to get 3rd & everything ok after that.

 

Is there a problem, or is it the case we must rev a bit harder before we change gear? For example, I was told for Alfa Romeo, you must rev the engine a bit harder in order to get smooth gear change. Otherwise its difficult or not smooth.

Check your rectifier, wiring and magnetic coil.

 

Ask your mech to connect your IU to your ignition. When ignition is switched off, the IU should follow suit.

 

This will prevent draining of battery if you're not gonna ride it frequently.

Hi Bro darkredmica. Thks for yr advice. Hav ask my mech to connect my IU to ignition. Actually he connect to the fuse. Hav also replaced a new batt. I will closely monitor it.

Nope, it only happened on 2 occasions. Both times at night shortly after leaving work. Perhaps I didnt let it warm up enough? I usually let the engine idle a bit longer in the mornings. This morning's ride to work no problem. To clarify, I had engine braking cos when I tried to pump clutch, I released it after I had kicked down 1st gear when trying too loosen up the jammed gear.

 

I only had the bike a week now, havent changed EO. Anyway the owner had the bike overhauled 2 months ago.

 

Manual says to use any SAE 40W grade oil for the gearbox. So I think I would jus use my dad's Shell Helix when changing oil. Accumulated balance oil after all the car servicing over time.

Shouldn't have any problem changing gear. Better get it checked bro!

 

And enjoy riding your sp. I suggest changing eo, plug, check your brakes etc. Sometimes can't trust the previous owner too much. Anw servicing for sp damn cheap. I changed eo n plug total $30. Did it every month since it was so affordable hahaha. :$

Btw, hav notice a few bros who jus bought SP mention their bike also overhaul a few mths ago. Coincidence?

 

Bro, u mention u jus bought yr bike a wk ago oledi 2 incidents of stuck at gear 2. I sugg u chg yr EO asap n monitor closely. Chg every 5k mileage shld b ok. Fyi, I also use shell helix ultra 5w40 fully syn. So far so gd. Abt 5 yrs oledi. If yr prob still persist, send wkshop asap. When u clutch in n pump clutch and engage in gear 1 u encounter eng brake at 5k rev. If someone behind u Nev kp safety dist, u will b bang. 2 wheelers don play play. Most impt u ride yr bike u mus feel safe. If NT tat kind of phobia will sort of bothering u thru out the journey.

Wow, darkredmica. U chg EO n plug every mth? Really sayang yr bike. I play by mileage 5k. Spark plug actually can Las v long. But tentatively 20k mileage. I DIY. More cheaper n more time wif my bike. Anyway thks for tat time u mention "connect to ignition" due to my batt alwys flatt since seldom ride. I susp main cause is the new type IU unit. Within 5mth chg 3 batt Liao. Suai.

Take out spark plug, try see got spark when try to kick start?

 

Careful when do it and ensure not near petrol

umm i know nothing about DIY... where and how to take out spark plug? kick start when the connection to the spark plug is still on ah?

Yes still conmected. Put other side of plug to bike body. Kick start and see got spark or not.

 

If dont know diy, then call bike shop and tow ur bike there

There are many possibility.

Once my sp also could not start. Towed to workshop, mechanic found the wire disconnected to the spark plug socket.

He just used his pliers stripped off the insulation put back the socket and it worked.

Also, U must learn how listen to the starting sound. When you kick start, if could not start,

there are 2 types sound. This is from my experience.

Thanks for your replies/input. Yup I will have my gearbox chked this sat. Jammed in 2nd gear again, twice this morning, but fortunately it rectified itself very quickly. Then again, i didnt ride the whole of y'day due to heavy rain in the morning. Used public transport only.

 

I didnt think very much abt it the very 1st time it happened last week, cos i was so used to all kinds of gearbox glitches with the sch bikes that I thot all these things were very normal! lol - eg jammed in 1st or 2nd gear, 2nd drop to N on its own when slowing down, refusing to engage 1st frm N no matter how much you kick down until you pump clutch etc. With all these kinda things happening to abt 2 yr old bikes, so what more my 14 yr old sp, i thot.

 

Glad I chkd with you people! Now I know its not normal. lol

 

@darkredmica - ya babe, apart from 3-4 close shaves with some &*^% drivers, Ive been having a blast riding the sp. Handles well & so easy to ride. I think I can very safely assume that youre hvg a blast too with your babyblade! Hv fun, ride safe!

Thanks for your replies/input. Yup I will have my gearbox chked this sat. Jammed in 2nd gear again, twice this morning, but fortunately it rectified itself very quickly. Then again, i didnt ride the whole of y'day due to heavy rain in the morning. Used public transport only.

@darkredmica - ya babe, apart from 3-4 close shaves with some &*^% drivers, Ive been having a blast riding the sp. Handles well & so easy to ride. I think I can very safely assume that youre hvg a blast too with your babyblade! Hv fun, ride safe!

I thought the sp was pretty hard to handle back then in terms of weight for the first 3 months especially. I must have dropped it 3 to 4 times during the first 3 months. Took me more than 6 months to be comfortable with the weight and be more confident with riding.

 

And yeap, the cbr4 is awesome. Couldn't have asked for a better 2a bike. The power is actually sufficient for sg road conditions. Of course no one is ever contented but it's just sad that the cbrs are a dying breed.

Yeap I did that when I was riding sp. I didn't bother about the mileage. I made it a ritual to get them changed monthly. Haha.

Hi guys, I'm still noob about SP also would to know from you that some basic thing like 2T EO, Break Fluid (Dot 3 or Dot 4) & Coolant to be refill.

Any brand can as above or any recommendations to use it.
