PSA: Beware of Scam During Accident Due to Confusion/Shock

Saw this shared between several riding groups, basically a rider got involved in an accident and when the owner of the car that hit him approached him for his phone to key in her contact number, she sent a Whatsapp (picture below) to herself pretending to be the rider and saying that 'he was at fault and no compensation is required'.

Shocking to think that there are such scrupulous and evil people around! Be weary and share with your biking friends so they are aware and know what to watch out for in such situations!

Always ride safe and protect yourself!

From rider (Avinash Mahtani):

Hi guys.. I was involved in an accident on 9th February 2021 at 1905H along the merger after Exit 13 from PIE (Changi Airport) to KPE/ECP and Sims Dr.

My bike plate is FBH 2591G. I was not able to snap a photo of the license plate of the white car that I was involved in the accident with as I was just too shell shocked from the fall.

A lady driver in a white car had slowed down on this fast moving merger and was trying to squeeze into the right lane (leading towards Sims Dr) that was full of back to back cars in a standstill. As I was rushing to complete my last order of the day, I tried to see if I could manoeuvre around her and move forward, but before I knew it she swerved her car to the left and jam breaked infront of me. In my attempt to not hit her car I swerved my motorbike to my left, skidded and fell over sustaining injuries to my left side and to my bike.

The lady driver stopped 2 car lengths away from me, with her hazard lights on and walked over to where my bike had fell.

She asked me a few standard questions like "Are you ok?" And "So what actually happened?" which I was not able to answer as I was still in a total state of shock. After the lady realised that I was still in shock, she persistently asked if I had my phone on me and had said that she wanted to save her number in my phone.

Unknowingly, I passed her my phone and she started to key her number in to save her contact. As she was doing so, she started to turn her back on me slightly taking a step away from me.

At this point the traffic was getting heavier, cars were horning and it was getting unsafe to be on this expressway merger, also considering it was peak hour. It was getting unsafe and I wanted to at least move to a safer area to discuss further.

She then handed me back my phone, asked if I needed a plaster for the cut on my left hand, which I declined and she walked back to her car and left the scene.

When I looked at my phone, I saw a new whatsapp chat between myself and her, where she had used my phone to text herself the following;

Hi
I admit it was my mistake and requires mo compensation
No compensation required and I am fine. No need claim for insurance. This us my statement

To any motorist who witnessed or have any footage, please kindly message me... Or if you have any advice, do let me know also.. thanks everyone, happy Chinese New Year and please be safe on the roads and also from this kind of people..

As a former LTA traffic marshal, I always see that accident victims are very venerable and can't think straight. Touters, insurance agents, passer-byes, scammers, and even the other party who is at fault will take advantage of the situation. Sometimes, during an RTA, I would try to help, but the victims have made their own decisions instead.

-Remain calm.
-If in minor RTA and you are pretty fine and no one is seriously injured, do not talk to anyone else, even the other party unless is to exchange particulars
-Insist the other party to exchange particulars (If refuse to exchange, take license plate) DO NOT LET THE OTHER PARTY TAKE YOUR PHONE. Give a miss call to ensure that phone number is correct.
-Take a lot of pictures and even video (Before you move your vehicles)
-Do not worry about the road condition
-Call TP if you feel that you need their assistance
-Always settle with your own insurance and call your own towing.
-Ignore all offers of "helpful" passer-byers that offer assistance on claims and towings

Best of luck to all riders. Stay and ride safe!!

Install bike camera,

Most of the accident car tries swerve in , i managed to get 100% with proof of video. do note. Motorcycle need further braking distance. Hence they got specialist to calculate the braking distance.

2) you still can claim again her. Make a police report within 24hrs. Police can check through the camera no fret. Timestamp is there. The moment she text and the moment she left plus minus.

Very scheming lady, sibei Er Xin this Mrs CHU. Let rider know don't let her get away with such underhand tactics.

Riders are vulnerable and chances to claim i guess will be high.

Thanks for sharing
