Hmmm... I think having an army-like SWD could work.... any cabbie that is found to have exceeded and tripped the meter would be subject to maybe a fine, 3 times and you're sacked. Any tampering found also means immediate dismissal.

Checks can be conducted every month.... but think they will violently object. So an electronic power limiter could be more effective and less hassle.

i like your idea!

how about writing to ST forums abt that?

might as well limit all cars and bikes to 90kph better. nobody speed so much safer, like in Driving centres.

But if you go N/S highway you will need to travel faster than 90km/hr. A Taxi will not be going out of S'pore.

A..ha..N/S Highway, those big lorry and buses travelled min at 120kmh oredy, what is 90kmh for them.

It doesn't matter how good your bike is, but how long you can ride it

??

I thought we're discussing about limiting Taxis' speed to 90km/hr? Those big trucks and lorries are all M'sian registered vehicles.

"if"..?

Back to topic.

Oh i see, restriction 90 kmh to the taxi here indeed still high, they should be also categorise under those other passenger vehicle (PA, PB,PZ etc) where the limit only 60 kmh, more safer for passenger. But then, you must be willing to spare more $$ as their meter clocks, say from Changi to Tuas.

I think we're both a bit confused...

I was responding to madman's reply:

might as well limit all cars and bikes to 90kph better. nobody speed so much safer, like in Driving centres.

So I said:

But if you go N/S highway you will need to travel faster than 90km/hr. A Taxi will not be going out of S'pore.

Heh heh, hope that clears up the confusion?

Anyway you mean the taxi meter runs on the timing? I had thought it was based on the distance covered...

Ha..ha..you are rite, I missed that. Tot u are talking in general.

Back on track..Ok...if you noticed when during traffic lite, the meter ticking too, I believe by per minute or what, the meter go charging beside the km covered. The slower the fellar travel, the meter going to be more in particularly.

Cheers.

If you noticed, the pricing system is actually pasted on the door of the taxis..

When you board.. the $2.40 accounts for the first 1km

For the next 10km, every 225m = $0.10

After 10km, every 200m = $0.10

If the taxi is stationary, every 25 seconds of waiting or less = $0.10

When the taxi is moving, the time meter stops. Hence, the total fare is calculated largely based on distance and partially on the time wastage.

If I don't recall wrongly,

When you board.. the $2.40 accounts for the first 1.6km

After that 1.6km, every 100m = $0.10

If the taxi is stationary, every ?? seconds = $0.10

When the taxi is moving, the time meter stops. Hence, the total fare is calculated largely based on distance and partially on the time wastage.

If so it will not cost more if the taxi travels at a faster or slower speed then!

Correct.

But it's pretty obvious why many of them prefer to drive fast. They probably can do more trips a day.

LTA has so much money for fines, but would they ever spend it on the taxis?

let's see. About 20K taxis, cost of equip + installation ~$50. Comes up to $1000,000.

Hmmm, a 1 million dollar exercise. Dont think so! :cheeky:

Exactly, the most the taxi company will organise those safety talk cum good 'makan' to create awareness among their drivers to drive safely, bla bla.

I still think that it is not the speed, but the DRIVING ATTITUDE. A taxi or any other vehicle can still knock you down at 30km/h in a traffic jam by suddenly swerving into your lane. Think about it .. it's the ATTITUDE ...

I agree it's the driver that is dangerous, whether it's 1000cc or 3000cc...

Therefore, it's no point limiting the taxi speed.

Let's say, the taxi is travelling on the left most lane at 70km/hr, u ride bike on the right lane of taxi...when u are side by side of taxi, he cut right into your path...

So, ask urself, does it matter if it's 1000cc or 3000cc?

I say, wanna make the roads safer, start with the driver and riders. Treat it right from the source...

there is no such thing as a perfect solution that will eradicate everything.

u can say its attitude, but that does not necessarily mean just because suggestions offered cannot tackle 'attitude problem' (i doubt anything will), it is no reason to start adopting a defeatist outlook and say all this ideas bout speed limiters wont work.

mebbe they wont solve the entire problem, but if it solves a portion of it, that is reason enuff to consider.

the speed limiter might not solve any of the problems that exists at speeds under 80kmh, and yes true, attitude-wise, under 80kmh the bad drivers will still give us problems. but if it solves some of the probs that occur above 80kmh, why shouldn it be reason enuff to consider? the glass is either half empty or half full.

my suggestion about pay meters that stop clocking at speeds above 80kmh, it would tackle a bit of the 'attitude' issue. it would inculcate the idea that 'faster is not more money'. again, its not gonna solve the entire attitude issue, coz they'll still do patterns under 80kmh, but my point is

EVEN A LITTLE BIT IS BETTER THAN NOTHING!!!

It's true: it's more fun to ride a slow bike fast than to ride a fast bike slow. Admittedly, though... It is MOST fun to ride a fast bike fast!
