  • Jantarakarn Kaewjan, a 40-year-old gas station worker in Hat Yai, Thailand, woke up to find her apartment building flooded after three days of heavy rains. The rising waters forced her to move her motorcycle to a higher floor. By 9 am, the water had reached her chest. Hat Yai, a city with a population similar to Oxford, received 335 mm of rain that day, the highest single-day tally in 300 years, causing catastrophic floods.

  • At least 145 people died in floods sweeping nine southern provinces, with 110 in Songkhla, the capital Hat Yai.
  • Residents Jantarakarn and two others told Reuters they received no clear warnings from local authorities as the rains swelled water levels, echoing complaints of government ineptitude.
  • Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul’s government removed Hat Yai’s district and police chiefs since the disaster.
  • Hat Yai Mayor Narongporn Na Phatthalung, with a population of 243,778, admitted to misreading the flood situation and apologizing to the people.
  • Hat Yai and nearby areas received 630 mm of rain over three days last week, overwhelming the city’s waterways and drainage systems. The floods swelled quickly, leaving a muddy mess of the city’s low-rise buildings, street restaurants, and shopping areas. Cars were stalled on a wide street, and people cleared mud and debris from homes. Over 16,000 people were moved to 16 evacuation centers, and the government approved funds of 4.75 billion baht (US$148 million) to assist flood victims.
  • Surviving on rainwater, Daeng, a 60-year-old woman who gave only one name, recounted the devastating floods that ravaged her home. Despite previous warnings from local authorities, she was left unprepared and had to fend for herself. The floods destroyed her second floor, flooded her rooms, and swept away her television and water tank. “We’ve lost everything,” she lamented.

  • Floods damaged over 33,000 homes, five hospitals, 58 schools, and 700km of roads in Hat Yai and its surroundings, according to an initial GISTDA assessment.
  • Daeng and her family, stranded at home, had enough food but quickly ran out of water. Her relative Anusorn Niyomtham, 40, said they had to collect rainwater by the third or fourth day.

SINGAPORE – More than 800 Singaporeans from southern Thailand’s Hat Yai have reached the Republic safely after they had e-registered with or reached out to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) during deadly floods in the kingdom.

On top of all these, there are a lot of non-profit organization that's continuously trying to help out as and when they could.
