Hi All

I will like to get some advice on the purchase of new 2B Scooter after recently gotten my 2B license.

At the moment, have look at Nmax, PCX, AeroX, Dollar150, Downtown (more ex), SYM Jet14, Joyride.

Appreciate some advise on the maintenance and performance. Price wise most are almost similair.

Million Thanks.

Congratulations on getting your 2B license! For a new rider in Singapore, choosing a scooter is a smart move for city commuting and food runs. Since prices are similar, your decision should focus on maintenance ease, fuel efficiency, and storage practicalities.
Japanese brands (Yamaha and Honda) generally offer the best reliability and resale value in Singapore, while Taiwanese brands (SYM, Kymco) offer more features or larger frames for the same price.

🛠️ Maintenance & Performance Breakdown

The Reliable Workhorses (Yamaha & Honda)

These are the gold standard in Singapore. Parts are available in almost every workshop, which keeps labor costs down.

Yamaha NMAX 155:

  • Performance: Features VVA (Variable Valve Actuation) for better pick-up at higher speeds. Known for being more "sporty" and nimble.
  • Maintenance: Very cheap to maintain. Note that some users report a slightly shorter service interval (4,000 km) compared to Honda.
  • Safety: Often comes with Dual-Channel ABS (front and rear), which is a huge safety plus for new riders.

Honda PCX 160:

  • Performance: Focuses on smoothness and refinement. It is often cited as being more fuel-efficient (up to 45-50 km/L) with a larger fuel tank for longer range.
  • Maintenance: Honda is famous for "no-headache" ownership. Longer recommended service intervals (6,000 km).
  • Storage: Usually offers a more "executive" feel with slightly better under-seat space for odd-shaped items.

Yamaha Aerox 155:

  • Performance: The "sportiest" of the bunch with 14-inch wheels for better stability in corners.
  • Cons: No flat floorboard (center hump) and a smaller fuel tank (5.5L), meaning more frequent petrol station visits. Suspension can feel stiff for pillion riders.

The Feature-Packed Alternatives (SYM & Kymco)

These often provide a "big bike" feel (Maxi-scooter style) at a 2B price point.

SYM Joyride 200 / Jet14:

  • Performance: The Joyride is a true maxi-scooter—very comfortable for long distances and pillions. The Jet14 is more compact and "zippy" for city traffic.
  • Maintenance: Parts are generally available, but you may need to visit specific SYM-authorized workshops (like Sporting Motors) for major issues. Some older models had cooling system complaints, but newer versions are much improved.

Kymco Downtown 200:

  • Performance: Heavy and stable. It feels more like a 2A bike (Class 2A power) but fits in the 2B category. Excellent for highway cruising.
  • Maintenance: Slightly higher than NMAX/PCX due to the larger engine and less common parts in neighborhood shops.

Kymco Dollar 150:

  • Niche: A newer, quirky "lifestyle" utility scooter. Great if you need to carry lots of items (dual seats that flip up), but resale value and part availability in SG might be lower than the NMAX/PCX.

⚖️ Summary Comparison

Feature NMAX / PCX Aerox SYM Joyride / Kymco Downtown
Best For Daily commute & reliability Sporty looks & handling Touring & Pillion comfort
Maintenance ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Easiest) ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Common) ⭐⭐⭐ (Specific shops)
Fuel Economy ~40-45 km/L ~35-40 km/L ~30-35 km/L
Resale Value High High Moderate

💡 Quick Tips for New Riders

  1. Check the ABS: As a new rider, prioritize a bike with Dual-Channel ABS (like the NMAX). It can prevent skidding during emergency braking on wet Singapore roads.
  2. Test the Seat: Some scooters like the Aerox have a higher seat height. If you are shorter, the PCX or NMAX will feel more "planted" at traffic lights.
  3. The "2A" Itch: Most riders in Singapore upgrade to Class 2A within 1-2 years. If you plan to do this, stick to an NMAX or PCX as they are the easiest to sell later with minimal loss.
