A not-so-professional review: Piaggio X10 Executive 125

Coming from a Honda PCX, it was really hard to adapt at first. I'll get to that later. I've rode on my lovely Honda PCX for two years and it was a good scooter. Trouble-free and very very low maintenance. At that point of time practicality was my main criteria. After a while, my needs now change. Or, to be honest, I wanted a Maxi. So I started looking... SYM GTS 200, Joymax, Kymco Downtown 200, Daelim S3 125... And then, I crossed path with the X10...

 

When I first set eyes on the X10, I immediately fell in love with it. I love the big chassis and the look is truly a GT class scooter. Everything screams luxurious. When I first sat on it, I knew this scooter will be a comfortable ride. I thought what the heck, bit the bullet and made my downpayment right away. You'd think I'm crazy and I admit it was an impulse purchase. I needed something to ease my mid-life crisis maybe.

 

The bike shop called and my scooter was ready for pick up. Went down to settle the paperworks, got the keys, start it up, and off I'm gone. Wait, a pause before I'm gone. I thought what the hell, this heavy chunk of machinery isn't moving. Revved it up and it was rocketing away and the transmission settled to a flat linear tone. Looked at the tachometer and I thought this is different..

 

After fighting the urge to go slow for quite some time (2 clicks) I thought what the hell, revved it and the engine comes to life. It moves off at 4500rpm and quickly jumps to 7000rpm. Didn't want to rev it more as its still new but the X10 quickly builds speed. Now that's more like it. Seems like the power band is around there and I revved it up a little more. 8000rpm. This beauty is cruising smoothly...

 

So, went home and cleaned up. Thought I'd go for a ride in a more casual attire as I went to pick it up after work. I studied the manual a bit and nothing important was noted. Basically there's not much new to learn anyway.

 

Fired it up again and off I went. I chose the normal roads to ride it just to see how it handles. Man, what can I say, this baby is heavy! Sticks to the ground. The shocks are great! Well, at least for me (I'm 165cm and weight 58kg) I vividly remember this usual route on my PCX just this morning and it was not as smooth as I thought. One thing to note, this scooter is a little front heavy in my opinion. The 15" front wheels makes a difference at the angle you tackle a corner with the weight of the front. The handle seems to turn slightly in when I'm entering a corner. Maybe I need practice. Or do some weight lifting. Man where are those weight gain protein shakes..?

 

Cruising at speeds of 60 - 70km/h is really enjoyable. I'm loving the X10 more and more! At 80 - 90km/h this baby shows its strength. The power band seems to reside in this range. I've climbed slopes on ECP and the speed doesn't drop. Nah, maybe it's because it's still new... At the end of the night, I realised that I've covered 130km island wide. Man, you will encounter time slips on this scooter! What can I say, I'm happy.

 

Comparing to the PCX, there's some adaptation needed. First off, it doesn't beat other vehicles at the stop-start, traffic lights. I miss my PCX at those moments. But once it gets to 60km/h @ 7000rpm, the power seems to kick in. I need to relearn this and stop listening to the exhaust notes. I don't know if its a Piaggio thing but this X10 seems to love the high notes.

 

Second, the brakes are crazily good! You can basically stop it in any normal riding condition by just applying pressure on the left brakes. This ABS thing is growing in me now. I don't think I'll buy another scooter without it. I feel safe and sure. The ASR never kicked in no matter how or where I ride it. Probably due to the lack of power on this scooter that it'll probably never encounter a slip at the rear wheels. Sad, but whatever...

 

Third, the levers are idiotically far from reach. My hands are numb after a while that I have to stop and take out my gloves to continue. I'm thinking of changing to aftermarket levers later.

 

Fourth, compartments are a joy! Wallet, keys, phone, ciggy box, all goes into the front left compartment. The right one stores nothing right now but a piece of micro fibre cloth. The 3 bottom compartment isn't that useful and I've not stored anything in it. The seat storage is amazing. I don't think I'll ever need a box. It currently stores my AGV K-3, a raincoat, a jacket, the user manual, insurance papers, parking coupons, a pen, an OGK Kabuto, and my sling bag. Yes, it's that big. I can do simple grocery shopping on this scooter. If I take out the OGK, I'll be able to fit my 14" laptop, in a bag, with the adapters, two of them. Well, I've exaggerated a bit there. But you get the point.

 

Lastly, the lights. You'll never get to see how cool the LEDs are but anyway, the lamp throw is good. I thought the PCX was great, but this is even better. The high beam is straight on and focused. You can't really test it in Singapore roads but its great!

 

So there you go! A mini review by a normal guy with only passion for scooters. It's not the usual spring-into-action type scooter but its heart lies in the long smooth ride. I miss some of the things on the PCX but I've not regretted getting the X10. It's riding position is comfortable, wind protection is great, travelling on highways isn't a nightmare anymore, and the handling gives you so much more confident when you're on the road. Weighing my needs and options right now, I can say that this will be a great scooter for me in my coming scooting days.

While I would like to say welcome to the scooter world, but maybe i am too late as you have ridden PCX before for 2 years. all i can say is you have not tried others yet. once you got onto the the silverwing, tmax, burgman, or even the x10 big brother like 350 or 500, then i cant wait to read your comment. hahahhahahhahha.

Haha! X100! Yeah, it'll be a looker. I only have a 2B license. That's why my options are limited. I would love to ride the SW-T400 GT someday but I'm procrastinating to upgrade my license. You see, the devil in me will rise up with the license upgrade...

Update: mileage is 800+km and I've done 2 oil changes, both times oil filter changed too. I also did a transmission oil change during the second time. The roller sound is quite obvious during startup and idling. According to my mechanic, this is normal for Piaggio scooters.

 

Changed the tyre air valves to the L type. I was wondering "God! What were the people in Piaggio thinking!" The side mirrors are not a joy to look at. You can't really check on traffic while riding. Either blind spot and no outer lanes or outer lanes and no blind spots. I've got to change these to bigger ones. But good news is, it doesn't vibrate and it's clear when you're cruising at 90km/h.

 

Scoot in the rain and the weather protection is amazing. Light rain is no issue. Hands will be wet but my shirt and pants were dry at least. The brakes are running in well and it is more neutral in braking now.

 

I've tried to put both my Full face helmets under seat, AGV K-3 and HJC RPHA-10, no issues at all.

 

Nothing much as of now. Just researching for after market exhaust options but I don't think there are legal ones for a scooter this new.

The L shape valves could be a danger, please keep a look out if there would be any obstructions for the L shape valves.. you might risk the valves being shifted from one side to another due to vibrations and hit onto any parts like the swing arm or brackets etc. just sharing my experience with the L shape valve! The straight ones are always safest

Just an update. Not sure if you X10 owners noticed but the fuel that I pump gives different mileage. I use Caltex 98 and 95 as a test.

 

My daily commute is the same route. I ride the same way and it should be fine to say that its not exaggeration.

 

On 98, my mileage is 30km/l

On 95, my mileage dropped to 25km/l

 

I've tested this numerous full tanks. Feedback from owners would be appreciated. Meanwhile, I'll stick with 98, although a bit expensive...

Pumped SPC 98 and saw the mileage estmated 420kms.

Used to ride piaggio X8 200cc, i do admit the boot space was amazing! However the reliability and cost of parts for this Italian bike is too high to bear, therefore decided to give up hope on piaggios.

 

Now with this X10, it got my heart tinkering again. Can anyone help review the power of the 125cc hauling a heavy body with pillion!

I don't pillion much at the moment. But my opinion on this would be straight honest. I'm 57kg and I find it sluggish to scoot off from stand still. I can imagine with a pillion around the same weight, it will be really sluggish. But it really kicks in when you gain speed around 60+ km/h at 7500rpm.

 

It is really subjective to different people. But I don't need to beat volvo-driving-soccer-moms at the red lights so I guess I'm happy with it. The road conditions in this country doesn't deem it necessary to have so much torque as well. Just my 2 cents

well said iliramove. I pillion my wife at times for short trips and I am happy with the performance. this is very comfortable scooter and honestly, I will not classified it as sluggish. myself is already 80kgs and my 125 is mounted with the top box some more.

I guess its a psychology thing when you hear people ask about the power, mileage, etc. I myself have graduated a few cars and bikes and scooters myself. At the end of the day, it boils down to practicality I feel.

 

Prompt maintenance to detect early signs of wear and tear, keeping the parts stock as well as scooting it the way its built to do should ensure it maximising its potential I think.

Presently riding 9yrs old x9.can't decide between kymco dt200 or piaggio.how much is piaggio x10 125 otr I have not find out abt dt200 price yet? Is servicing, parts really X for piaggio? I just bought my x9 so don't really abt the cost. Also pick up and speed is it on par with x9? Tks

Not sure which X9 model you're riding so I can't comment on the pick up and speed comparison. But it serves me well here riding an X10 125.

 

The parts can be costly, compared to Japanese scooters due to parts availability here in SG. But if you do the due diligence to maintain it periodically, you should be OK. I always do the engine oil change and oil filter change together. Other than that, flushing the transmission oil after first run in. As far as maintenance costs, its still OK. However, replacement parts, repair, I have no idea yet. But keeping it stock should prolong the parts life I guess?

A GT class itself, this is the first class of scooters!! Abt parts.. well if you driving European vs Japanese.. the cost is expected to b premium. No complaints.

The price of DT200 should be around $10K. Just saw the new batch that arrived this week. Really impressed with the sound n power of the engine.
