Hi

I see that the thread started with some watches for the common man (seiko, et al.) and then through the years till it's been on Rolex, Panerai, et.al. I love them and appreciate the quality. I've a circa '65 Omega Seamaster, but prefer my Mido of the same period.

No offence to anyone. I thought it would be good to be inclusive for many to enjoy the pleasure of wearing mechanicals (hand-winding or automatics) at affordable prices (sub-$1000). I am talking about watches like Seiko, Orient and Citizen Divers (Japan), O&W (Swiss), etc.

How's that with the crowd here?

:-)

alright... sub$1K mechanical watches

I bought this lately, grin factor is equal if not more than watches that cost 50 times more.

Love it so much and bought the black dial version a week after the silver dial.

She's a beaut! Dig Orient watches. this one's very elegant. Is it the FER24004B Bambino? Like the understated silver. I'm thinking of getting one. something that echoes my Mido but a bit more hardy for business daily use. I'm currently using the EM75002D Divers "Mako II" as my daily watch.

What a piece! Sadly, my 6309 died on my after 28 years. I dig the thick case of your 6105. Th lack of Date makes the dial more balanced, with the date almost the same size as the "9" . :-)

thanks , I still have a 6309-7040 running strong.

You mean the lack of the DAY not the DATE?

Incidently, back in 1997, I bot a brand new silver Pacific Coast from Mah Motor for $23k .

A great bike for daily city riding and easy touring.

Yes sir!, they are the Bambinos!

ER24005W - Silver dial

ER24004B- Black dial

My silver dial Bambino is keeping good time, about +8 seconds/day

Black dial is a tad fast, about +15 s/day

Changed both stock pin and buckle to deployant claps 2 weeks ago, love the pair!

I really like deployment clasps and changed my Orient GMT to deployment clasps too, but the humidity in Singapore just kills leather straps. 3 days and it stinks! I've decided to keep the leather for use in temperate climates. Been using my Maratac NATO straps instead.

It's an Orient CFE04002B

They come if a variety of combinations of leather straps and steel bracelets.

Here's a pretty good page with the pics of the combinations:

http://www.roachman.com/orient/preserve/CFE04001.html

I almost got my watches from a US online store when I stumbled across http://www.skywatches.com.sg and realized that it's in Singapore - people's park - the owner - Adrian, sells a tremendous amount of watches on the internet around the world.

Nice guy to work with.

I got all my sub $500 Japanese watches from skywatches since 2003, mainly as a gift to the younger ones in the family. I still remember their website was quite primitive then, with this string of "skywatches" alphabets tagging to the cursor of the mouse like a flying ribbon as you browse the page... haha.

You're spot on about value for money. I was about to buy an O&W MP2 ETA 2824-2 movement at about USD400 when I stumbled upon Orient and realized that the work is more refined for less$ and the movement is in-house and not a generic eta workhorse (not that there's anything wrong with it). I liked the thought that Orient builds their watches under their own roof - a nice thought. And for the common man too.

ANyway, you note that the bezel numbers are red and black in the pic. Mine's all black because I used wax pastels to color it for better visibility. But originally, it comes just bare stainless steel. very classy (not as practical) vey much like a motorbike inspired watch IMHO. embossed stainless steel, color-coordinated threads on the leather strap. nice work at the price.

I thought I'd share a bit of what I learnt about NATO and ZULU straps

MARATAC

First Bought NATO and ZULU straps from West Coast Time (Howard M. Marx) He was one of those who sold the Maratac brand. Bought the Black, Desert Tan and the Bond (grey/black). in 20 and 22 mm.

Why NATO and ZULU over leather, silicone/rubber or Steel Bracelet?

Lightest weight

Loops through both pins - prevents losing the watch if one pin snaps under water, while biking or doing outdoor activities

Moulds best to the wrist bone structure

I can change colors to suit the clothes and mood

Long enough to wear over wetsuit or bike jacket for ease of time check

Damn tough

Why not?

Very informal - not suitable for suit/business clothing

Bacteria growth - esp in tropics - smells bad after soaking in salt water/or sweat if the wearer doesn't' wash

What's the difference between NATO and ZULU?

Nato is generally more user friendly in my opinion. Lower profile and doesn't have the s/steel rings flipping to and fro. The ZULU I think, came from a diver's background. I see it available in Nylon straps made for Citizen divers.

Have a look at these at the West Coast time website (I have no vested interest in his business):

http://www.westcoastime.com/newzulbanare.html

NATO or ZULU? For me, I'd go for NATO.

Later wanted to buy more when my desert tan became 'gold' (I wash them once a week in the washing machine - threw it in buckled onto my jeans belt loop. Easy. Gets a better wash than washing by hand using a toothbrush with dish wash detergent.

DIEVAS

I stumbled across Gnomon Watches at Shaw Tower/ Beach Road. Liked the Blue/grey Bond strap. Bought it. Apparently the straps there are sold under Dievas (A Singapore investment into a German watch co - this is all hearsay from the sales person there - if so, I'm proud to see an SG company turn international.) I stand corrected for the brand, but for easy reference, let's just call them Dievas for now.

Anyway, The array of colors are like that of an well decorated old soldier's No.3 uniform chest. Full of colors. Beautiful!

NATO Strap Comparison

Personal appraisal of quality between Dievas NATO Strap and the Maratac Nato Strap:

DIEVAS :

Thinner (dries faster, but seems less hardy to me - tension on the holes tend to stretch the hole more, when I back fold the strap, being thinner, the loop doesn't hold it in place well enough. It slips through sometime during the day.)

Feels like more polyester content

Holes for the buckle: a bit more scratchy. - the laser cutting of the strap holes is not as fine

Shorter strap (This is a disadvantage for the way I wear - pulling the strap back into the second loop through to the first - it barely is enough strap)

MARATAC:

Thicker (dires slower, Seems tougher. Tension on the holes hold well for a much longer period of time. The loop holds the strap in place when it is doubled over back through the loop.)

Feels like more natural fiber (may not be, though)

Holes are very well laser cut. Not scratchy at all!

Longer strap - can be double-backed into the second loop sufficiently.

Recommendation. I personally tend to like the MARATAC better. However, they are limited in colors. Very standard military colors - Black, Olive, Grey, Desert Tan, SAR Orange, Grey/black Bond (as seen in Goldfinger). There are a few more like red or blue stripe through the centre of a black but that's about it.

The Dievas come in an array too wide for me to describe.

Eg. I love using the Dievas Navy Blue Bond strap on my My Blue Orient Mako II. the original bond just doesn't make the blue of the watch stand out (I'll put up some pics another time).

So it really depends on what you want. Functionally, the Maratacs are superior. But where colors matter, and the Vanila isn't the flavor, then I'm glad we have Dievas to choose from.

It's late, I gotta go now. I hope this has been fun and helpful for you to read and might spark some more we can learn from each other.

Cheers!
