If you want automatic watch and best bang for the buck i would recommend you Sandoz. Use a reliable workhorse swiss movement ETA 2824 with sapphire crystal and metal bracelet. If you not confortable with the bracelet you might like to buy the 'ORIS' style rubber strap with deployment for about $28. Alternatively you can get Nato types nylon straps for about $13 a piece. With $300 you can get the above. Either explorer type or submariner type is well within the budget.

50 pounds for a 1016 explorer in 1954 works out to something like S$2,750 today (http://eh.net/hmit/ukcompare)... sigh... maybe i should just lock my explorer 1 in a safe-deposit somewhere and pass it on to my grandchildren...

haha no need to put in safe deposit box leh.....just wear and u can still pass it on........with regular service the watch can last for decades......

Passions now have a GMT Master 2 with box n paper for about $5K. I'm really tempted. But bonus $$$ must spend on other thing first. How i wish i can get that piece today before someone (maybe skydude) grab it.

Posted

Yes HK stocks up many sports models. GMT, Sub , Explorer, Daytona many available, on display. quite common sight.

I also just got back from HK on 3 July, was there over the weekend to chill out.

Anyway, Rolex Sports models make good everyday watches. But becos it's very affordable, just keeps on getting more and more common.

notice the font of the numbers on Phang's seagull watches......??

It's exactly the same font used on a Patek Phillippe Calatrava ....

On the issue of HK , I wasnt going to buy so i didnt ask about prices.

I dont think i'll ever buy a Daytona, becos i cant stand the chrome on the bracelet and the bezel...

I had the Seagull too. Mine was the 1963. Why i cant post the pic? As soon i got the watch; the applied numeral drop off and worst still after a full winding the spring jammed. I send it for repair. Still in the repair shop and if it is costly to get it done i won't get it back.

The cost of servicing the chrono in Singapore probably as much as, if not more than the price you paid for the watch, maybe you can keep the watch as a static piece to admire in you collections. Personally, I am extremely impressed by what the China watch manufacturer can offer with such relatively little money.

Maybe you can introduce your China contact to exarkun? See if he can be of any help to the seagull. hehe

yeah in this case, the seagull fell into the sea and drowned......hopefully it can be revived ....at a reasonable cost...
