Sinn U1 - Should be around 2K, after discount should be late 1s. If im not wrong the waiting list for the U1 used to be quite long.

With rgds to rolex discount, it's true that i was quoted with discount off the list price at a hefty 23% but the model i was getting was a ladies rolex, probably explained why there was a discount in the first place.

Wow, just browsed through the loooooooooong thread. Looks like there're lotsa watch aficionado bikers around! Wow. Seems like the preferred brands are Tags, Rolex and Omega, given the overwhelming number of posts on them, esp. Rolex.

I find that wearing a mechanical watch while riding has 4 disadvantages.

1. they slide down your wrist once you sweat (esp. since they're heavier than their quartz counterparts), which makes the watch vulnerable to scratches from the gloves, esp. the hook side of the velcro.

2. One can bang up a watch real good just trying to tighten a nut or adjusting the clutch free play due to accidental tool slips etc.

3. Mechanical watches are sensitive to vibration, shock and magnetism. Most may not fare well (not sure abt high end sports models though like the Sinn U1/U2) from the constant vibration and high g's through direct feedback from the handlebars, not to mention the strong magnets from tank bags and effects of engine heat/direct sunshine. At the very least, adjustments will be affected and regulation may be necessary.

4. A heavy watch (esp. one on a metal bracelet) may cause serious injuries in the event of an accident. I was shown pictures of an accident victim whose bracelet cut so deep into his arm they severed major nerves and muscle tissue.

I don't have anything against mechanicals. Just I don't think it's suitable for biking because its more fragile than a quartz (less moving parts). Do feel free to rebut though, if you're perfectly happy with your mechanical watch.

Just some personal brand biases:

1. Rolex. They mass produce 600-800k watches a year. Admittedly well engineered/well finished for most of their models but a commodity watch nevertheless that commands a bubble price premium. Not much 'watch' for the money.

2. Omega. Nice watches (Sea master anyone?), though I have a preference toward their quartz X-33. More value for money to buy pre-owned though, if you don't mind. Flashier (sexier?) dial work than a Grand Seiko/Orient Star Royal but finishing/detailing is not up to par with their Japanese counterparts.

3. Tag Heuer: Fashionista through and through. Easily recognizable/coveted by my peers but reliability and quality is suspect, given the ownership experience of quite a few friends. The cosmetics are there but materials and movements are not up to par for a watch in that price range. Pricing reflects brand hype.

I'm sure this is going to rile a few feathers and I claim no specialist knowledge, just reflecting personal bias.

Welcome welcome

Yes your opinions do make good sense.

For me:-

1. Not bothered if it slides down my wrist. in fact i cover it with my gloves mostly.

2. My watch already quite banged up anyway becos i wear it for most occassions, including when fiddling with my bike or car, etc...

3. Not being perfectly in synch is a feature of good mech watches that gives a character, unlike a digital rubber watch. Most good mech watches can easily take the daily beating and still continue to run perfectly. I've tried and tested.

4. Probably may cause injuries during accident, yes. It's a choice of risk to take i guess.

Rolex - Mass produced

Omega - Even more mass produced

Tag - even even more mass produced.

......sadly....cant afford 15 in the world type USD150k Patek Phillipes or Constantin Vacherons.

Throttle bro, thanks for your kind word. hehe anyway the watch not really so important, just plain too lavish buy for me.

Well argued Throttle. Like you say, much of it boils down to choice.

Just one counter. Omega may be a commodity watch and still overpriced due to hype/history/glam factor, but it still offers better value than a Rolex when purchased used. I know Rolex has staying power in terms of resale but that is not a certainty down the road, given its mass market nature, strict control of dealer margins and inherent QC issues brought about by adopting assembly line manufacturing.

Was speaking to a friend on MSN just and I asked what's the criteria when buying a watch.

The reply? Brand and looks.

So I asked, which brand is No. 1 for you? Omega. Constellation series. Seamaster not bad too.

Then I asked. What about cost of maintenance, lack of accuracy etc? Not concerned. Got HP to check correct time. Maintenance? Battery cheap lah.

Battery? On a Seamaster? HP? Redundancy?

Go figure!

I sure hope ppl shopping for a watch ain't as clueless as my friend.

I should qualify that the only mechanicals I own are 2 dress watches with ETA 2688 and ETA 2834-2 movements. Swiss made but I must admit a weakness for Grand Seikos (esp. Spring Drives) and Orient Star Royals.

My ideal watch? Probably not made yet. It's a quartz triple time zone true 24 hour watch, i.e. swapping the automatic for a quartz movement in the Glycine Airman D24. Full titanium with Duratect+DLC, sapphire crystal and either solar or kinetic powered so a battery change is moot.

If there is one watch I'll buy next year, it'll be the Yes Zulu celestial watch. Now that's a conversation piece!

Well, my "first" mech watch was an Omega Speedmaster. wore it for a few years, then swop to a Submariner. The Speedmaster broke down on me once.

The reality about luxury watches, there is no such thing as true measurable value. It's all perceived. The higher the perception , the higher the value.

In fact that holds true for all luxury goods. thats why they spend so much on creating the perception.

anyway I've worn Rolexes for about 10 yrs now. They have proven totally reliable so i just continue. I'm sure the other watches are just as reliable but similar to many other things in life, once you get used to it, you continue to use it. heh heh
