What is the difference between gasoline and diesel engine?

 

(i) Diesel engine is compression ignition while gasoline is spark ignition.

 

(ii) Higher compression ratio -> higher efficiency. So why can't gasoline engine reach compression ratio as high as that of diesel engine? Because as compression ratio increases, the temperature of the fuel-air mixture will also increase, such that it reaches above the auto-ignition temperature of the fuel, causing premature combustion before top dead centre (TDC) --> lower efficiency.

 

(iii) For gasoline, charge is fuel-air mixture at intake stroke. For Diesel, charge is only air at intake stroke.

 

(iv) Diesel engine has higher efficiency (~45%) than gasoline engine (~35%)

 

(v) Diesel engine is more sturdy because the block need to be stronger to withstand higher compression ratio. Hence, generally diesel engines are heavier than gasoline engines.

 

(vi) ignition for gasoline is better than diesel engine.

 

(vii) Both have different exhaust emission.
