Am I (tall and obese) able to take the 2B course?

Hello, fellow bro/sis.

 

My company's van will be scrapping next year and with such high COE, unlikely my boss will get a replacement.

 

With my build (1.87m tall & 165 kg), public transport is quite impossible and inaccessible (Tuas South), as such I was thinking of signing up for a Class 2B bike course and switch to a 2-wheeler when my company's ride is scrapped.

(taxi is too expensive, so that option is out and no cash to get my own 4-wheeler)

 

I have driven past BBDC and seen those "L" platers with their instructors on the road.

 

Will I be able to fit into those bike (tyres can take my weight), step on the gears?

I don't think it's a problem for your size.. but it's best to check with the respective driving centers! My bike the ST has a max load of 190kg so in your case I guess only you can fit on the bike without a pillion!

the bikes are designed to carry one pilot and one pillion each of average build. at worst, your weight is of two people of average build. i dont think the bike will have a problem.

 

but how about the pillion-riding lesson? i donno. but that lesson is not a test so perhaps the center has a way around it.

 

and i besides i do see obese people on 2b bikes so why not.

I don't think hat your height and weight is an issue to take the license. i have been big size people(around 140-160kg) take 2b license at bbdc and also riding a 2b bike on the road too.

Btw. I know this is out of line.. Since u know you're obese.. Why not try to exercise more. Health matters too my friend..

 

And you can just make a phone call to the driving centre. No need to purposely go down..

SSDC doesn't have pillion riding lessons anymore so don't worry!

Getting the licence isn't easy regardless of size, and you will be at a disadvantage just because of your height. I'm 1.93 tall and class 2B really sucked - it's very cramped on learner bikes, the handlebars are too close to your body and the distance between seat and footpeg is too short - so your knees will always be bent in an uncomfortable position. The taller you are - the center of gravity will be higher making balance harder, wobbling more likely, which is important in the circuit. As far as weight is concerned, I've seen some pretty heavy guys who had amazing technique in the circuit - so it's not a problem.

 

Once you get your licence there's much better choices out there for you to buy for a comfortable ride.

FYI, i am just like you. I passed 2b in 2010 at ssdc woodlands. just go for it.

me too ... 110kg 1.8 .... I took at CDC last year .. funny part ... when lesson 5 ... hav to carry . pillion ... soo heavy ... I just skip the hill & figure 8.... the Instructor ... just don care... Think pillion part just for experience ...

the only problem i faced as a not so tall obese rider during 2b is that, during Ebrake, it's quite hard to get to the minimum speed unless really whack the engine.

but well my time was 2005, the bike is so cui, not so sure about the newer bikes nowadays.

They take the trouble for me to the bike store and try the bike.

Not a bad fit. Kudos to the friendly staff there.

 

Just some observation, the BBDC helmets are kinda of small for me, too tight.

I see a lot of bike shops along Jalan Besar, what kind of budget should I be looking at for a "PSB-approved" no-frills kind?

 

I presume the bike shops should be able to sell me the various arm and knee guards right?

$50 to $80 shd do it. Get one with clear visor. And make sure the sticker says tuv/psb. No telling what the shop might try to chop you with.

 

Make sure it fits with even pressure all round.if it doesn, be patient and try other models or other shops.
