Former Liverpool midfielder Jason McAteer has announced he is to hang up his boots.

McAteer, 35, became a free agent at the end of last season when his contract as player/coach with Tranmere Rovers was not renewed and he's now decided to call time on his playing career.

 

The boyhood Reds fan arrived at Anfield from Bolton Wanderers for £4.5 million in September 1995.

 

Signed as a midfielder he was often deployed by then boss Roy Evans as a wing back but struggled to fully establish himself as a firm favourite of the crowd.

 

In his four years at the club he made 150 appearances and played in the 1996 FA Cup Final defeat to Manchester United before being sold to Blackburn in 1999.

spice boys? wad spice boys? jason mcateer was in livpl when i first came to know epl. then, capt was paul ince.

 

Yes.. he was in the liv team captained by govner ince at dat time. And he was part of the group of players that the english media gave a nick for - the spice boys.

Collymore is the star!!! weet!!! Leonhardson will be with bjornebye and kvarme as the norwegians... Mcmanaman will be scored from corner.. hehe.. brought back memories wherby i will buy the liverpool mag and tear out the posters and paste onto my wall with a poster of the liverpool logo in the middle..
