What does this have to do with street smart. So long as the jacket does not get in the way of the mirrors, tangles up in the bike systems or inhibit the rider.

You are Absolutely Right Chris...

As long as our Clothing does does

Get in the Way.

At higher speed(eg highways)...

Greater amount of Surface area

(clothings or say a scooter as compared to a heavier bike.)

Would Affect Stability of the Bike.. Eg Our Safety.

Cross wind over bridges, hill top...

Disruption of air flow when passing Big Vehicles...

Even with tight clothings & heavy bikes...

The effects are quite significant.

hmm.. i can understand on the jacket part.. but still, u dun really wear a raincoat on a dry day (unless u treat it as a jacket?) And if its raining, wearing backside front defeats the purpose of wearing a raincoat becos ur back will be wet! The only reason i can tink of is.. tummy too big, cant zip up

and yes, i still see riders w/o side mirrors. one is better than none, but then, why not have both? isnt that safer? the mirrors will not affect the way u squeeze lanes, unless u got ultra big mirrors like mickey's ears.. o_O

btw, although the kind of bikes i've seen on the roads w/o mirrors belongs to 2B bikes, i still see some class2A bikes w/o mirrors too. Not very good examples eh?

yah man totally agree to ride with mirrors. Sometimes when i ride with my R1, I fold the mirrors to aqueeze stationary traffic lights kind of jam (coz they got "memory" foldable mirrors... as they have indents and spring back to where it was!) i forget to unfold back, wao so dangerous!~!! :giddy:

I am a person who hates mirrors kanah hit/ touched as i like it to be exactly where i want, so they see as much as I hope the area would permit. Mirrors is a must man!! And I think bike looks nicer with mirrors... dunno why! :cheer:

Ride hard & safe...

Street Smart Golden Tip of the Day #50

A Moment of Anger Can Turn Us Into Monsters

Endless... amount of report of how road rage can kill.

Be reminded... we can lose our Cool very Quickly...

Just some car cut into our lane... tailgate... flash lites... horn...

Hog the right lane...

Worst... almost hitting us by their carelessness...

Just surprise how fast we can loose my Cool...

...show our displeasure by overtaking the vehicle & glaring at him..

Pointing fingers and etc... "#*!@"

In the end... all upset... day ruined.

Worst... Other guy takes your challenge & tries to ram u down.

Let's us learn to keep cool... &... Forget the incident...

Forgive Him. Proceed with life..

Believe me... We will live a better life.

Let Me End with This Quote from Endlessloop:

"Some of my thoughts about bikers:

- Don't be so sticky about our "right of way". It is a nice-to-have. But be realistic. If we are going to ride thinking that everybody has to follow and respect our right of way, we are going to be very unhappy riding or get ourselves injured.

- Beware of our own inferiority complex. Some times we think we get bullied because we are on a smaller bike or smaller car. Then we get upset. There is no need to. Most of the time, the problem lies with the other party and not us. The "guilty party" just tailgates every vehicle, not just us because we are on a cheaper transport.

Have you experienced this before? Seeing in your rear view mirror, a big car that tailgates you like a glue. Then you think "idiot! tailgate me because I'm on a bike right". In exasperation, you give way and let the idiotic car over take. Then you realised that idiotic car just tailgates the next car in front! So the problem is the driver, not you! So no need to develop unhappiness over your good-old-cheap-but-gets-you-anywhere transport just because of some idiot!

I believe that riding is like in life, you should try to be as happy as possible. Spend less time being unhappy. It is especially not worthwhile to make ourselves unhappy over people that we don't like or are strangers."

STREET SMART

CELEBRATES with

The 50th Tip of the Day

Street Smart would like to thank all readers for their

contributions and encouragement.

Four months had passed since the 1st tip was posted…

“The 1st Six minutes”

It is my sincere hope that the knowledge passed on

In this series would be beneficial to all riders.

Especially the new & younger riders.

As a Recap:

The Focus is not so much on the physical but the

Mental aspects of riding skills, and how attitudes and

Concentration affect riding performance.

Developing appropriate attitudes.

Recognizing attitudes are important,

And making a personal commitment to

Changing Unsafe attitudes.

We had looked at the different situations

That Can be potentially dangerous.

How to keep clear of them.

Or at best be cautious when we have to go through.

There is always some degree of risk while riding a motorcycle,

But a rider’s attitudes can greatly influence the risk involved.

As one of the safety author puts it…

“If you are reading materials concerning safe riding…

…you are in the Low Risk Group

Where does “Street Smart” go from here…

Until the contributions are exhausted… we will go on.

Learning is a continuous process.

At all level of experience.

Being a good rider means we never stop learning.

Improve our skill both physical & mental.

Whenever we ride, it is an opportunity to

Reassess and improve our skills.

In your sharing, I had learned much.

Thank you.

Balancing on a Steep Slope is always very difficult.

(more so if yours is a Big Bike)

Especially when the stop is sudden.

Many had fallen or had close calls.

It could be due to the Traffic in front that stops in a sudden.

Or when our bikes is in the wrong gear,

misjudge the severity of the Slope.

So, remember... approach a STEEP SLOPE...

...plan not to stop on the slope.

Or just wait below till u have the opportunity to.

Very true.. once some yrs ago, while i was ridin a tzr (kick start no electric start) the engine stall in between a slope. some more i had a pillion. I had to ask my pillion to get off then right leg for kick start + right hand to throttle to start n also depressing front brake at tat time..

from then on plan n try not to stop on the slope even now ridin an electric start bike..!! haha..:cheeky:

Perhaps a Good Habit to Develop.

Whenever coming out of a Junction...

...Keep to the Side will always be a Safe Habit.

May Just miss a on coming car or perhaps misjudge his speed.

(a little tired, a little sleepy or just simply having something else on our minds)

Is there any tip about avoiding cows (or other animals), one of the guys on my trip last weekend hit a cow. Mooooo. bike a little damaged, cracked elbow socket, cow ran off.

OK this was in Malaysia, but within the town limits, and certainly on roads like the one up to Eagle ranch once you are off the highway.

In Australia... Animals are a Main Hazard.

Especially during Sunset till dusk. Kangaroos!

Possibility of animals seeking the warm of the Tar Roads.

Animals are always a danger to bikers.

Have not really notice any stray cows/buffaloes on the roads in Malaysia

Maybe well fenced in. That's good.

But Certainly please be very careful, where there's farms.

Look for signs... if u see cow sh*t... there's definately cows around.

Give yourself enough distance to slow down if an animal appears in the middle of the road. :thumb:

Hope U like my collection pics of cows & donkeys

From the city of Ahmadabad, India.

Being animals... they are quite well camouflaged.

Makes it more difficult for us to see them...

The animals are well respected there.

And they wander freely.

Motorist just go around them.

Yes, in malaysia trunk roads, cows are a REAL and dangerous hazard.

I think your friend was lucky. Because a stationary cow weighs a good several hundred kg and is enough to stop a speeding bike dead in its track.

There are warnings of cow signs posted at certain areas of the trunk roads.

Good thing is that in general, the cows are rather shy and stay away from the roads.

I summoned my guts and ventured once to try to touch them. But to no avail. Despite their formidable size, the herd runs away as soon as I get near 50 metres of them, even when solo by myself on foot.

However, you never know when a cow might decide to cross the road.

The best is to keep an active look out. The problem is not on the straights but always around bends. In this case, just stay within the thumb of rule that be prepared to suddenly stop as you go round a bend.

in Malaysia, cows, goats, sheep, fowl and monkeys on the side of the road are very very common. Also monitor lizards. I don't see many fences keeping them in. Maybee just along the highway. Normally the landowners just dig a longgang/trench

From time to time, a wild boar may cross your path. These things are big, and will knock you off then attack you (from what I have heard).

Even in Singapore I have seen 2m monitor lizards on the highway. Dogs are common, chickens not so much.

A question for you, what do you do when you see a dog in you path, swerve to avoid it or emergency stop even though you may run it over ?

Current FAZER600-Naked

i rather slow down if there is a dog in my path until it clear out of my path then to risk swerving, i depends on the road situation too.

Am i right in doing this? or i should try another approach?

like what my encik said in excersie wallaby : "React fast. Try to slow down if u can, if u cannot, just go over the damn kangoos. its better for the animal to die than u risk ur own life".

sad but kinda true.. if ur speed is too fast and cant slow down in time, then no choice.. :giddy: try not to swerve abruptly though..

Philosophy A: Ignore what everyone else thinks. Riding is a better way to get around. Ride paranoid and keep your skills sharp

Philosophy B: Ride with somebody who's better than you. You will pick up a handy trick or new skill just about every time you are out

Philosophy C: You don't need a big bike to prove ur passion for riding

to avoid them, go slow when u see them. do not accelerate suddenly, don't blow your exhaust,(according to some kampung ppl i met, they told me that loud exhaust note sounds like a swarm of bees thus making them panic) don't horn. it'll make them panicked and spill on to the road.

pos·er (pozr) n.

A Sportbike rider who habitually pretends to be something he is not and only care about how they appear to the public as their bikes are nothing more than props to get them noticed by girls or even teenage boys which they want to impress with fictional tales of all the hardcore riding they do.

We must try not to harm any animals.

But if really unable to avoid safely...

Best to ride thru'. Hold the bike firmly.

If it is something small like an iguana or bag of rubbish.

Cow? We will probably crash & land on the other cows.

Then they will really be upset with us. :giddy:

AS for kangaroos, Cars does get damage quite badly.

The amazing thing is that the Kangaroo would most of the time just

pick themselve up & hop away... Very Strong Animals.

Damn..... how/where to get a pilot license huh?

Sorry :offtopic:

It doesn't make any difference whether a motorcyclist has the right-of-way or not, the rider is the one most likely to get hurt.
