Hi all, moving to SG from Sydney in a couple of weeks and keen to pick up a bike soon after arrival. Which bike shops are the best for new bikes? Particularly Kawasaki & Yamaha. Especially keen to check out the new 2014 Z1000SX.

Also, curious why so many second hand bikes in SG have such high kilometres? In Australia, any bike with more than 50,000 klms would be very hard to sell! Do people just tend to ride their bikes daily / on long journeys?

Cheers,

Scott

Probably can try Bike Production or Looi motor. I can't comment much on this as I never bought new bikes from dealers.

In average a bike travels 10000km per year here, about 30km per day, to and fro between home and destination. Bigger bike may even travel further up to Malaysia or Thailand, hence further increases the mileage.

If 50000km for 5 years, I would say that's pretty normal. If 50000km in 1 year... pass it.

getting a new bike?

does tat means u will stay n ride for more than a yr in sillypore?

u can apply for temporary license to ride superbike with proof n owned a superbike in ur country, lta will only grant u a yr.

or ride with international license from ur country.

lta is sillypore land transport authority.

lta will only grant u class 2b license, tat is limited to 200cc bike.

u have to wait for a yr before u can take next stage class 2a lic (up to 400cc) test.

if u pass class 2a lic, u have to wait another yr before u can take class 2 lic (above 400cc) test.

before each test, u need to undergo several theories n practical lessons.

there r fewer than 10% of motorcycle class 2 license holders currently.

lta makes it very difficult to get lics, motorcycle population decreases yr after yr.

most mopeds u can see on sillypore roads r from malayias.

most sillyporeans will own mopeds, superbikes r mostly weekend rides to malayias.

traffics r hot n bad, more cars than bikes, ratio like 6 cars:1 bike.

riding a superbike is more like having an oven btwn ur legs.

here ppl kept their bikes for more than 10 yrs, becoz it is expensive for common folks to change new bike every 5 yrs.

now to buy a new bike, we have to pay our garmen S$4,000 for limited COE (certificate of entitlement).

car coe is >S$77,000.........more coe ($$$) collections (more than 600,000 vehicles).

tats why we kept our bikes for more than 10 yrs.

even after ten yrs, we have to pay our garmen large sum of prevail quote (3 mths avg of new coe) to keep our bikes.

COE puts sillypore to be the most expensive city in the world to live.

edit:

this link will provide u comprehensive coverage on owning a vehicle in sillypore:

bike shops in ubi sells new / old bikes. I would suggest you try renting a bike and have a feel what biking in singapore is like before buying, who knows, you might not like riding a large bike in Singapore's traffic and weather.

Yamaha distributor is Hong leong. Kawasaki distributor is evershine. Loois motor parallel import these bikes. High mileage bikes are due to most of us having 1 form of private transportation. The tax (called COE) to buy a new bike is on the steep rise now. Just to take note

Big bikes here are often ridden to KL for track days rather than towed, cheaper that way and touring bikes are well, toured, sometimes used everyday.

To save costs, a cub would suffice for the roads, a ZX1000 would use barely 20-30% of its power before its speeding.

Appreciate the responses all!

Regarding license, will I be able to easily transfer my Australian license? I have had an unrestricted motorcycle licence for more than 10 years and have owned many big bikes such as CBR1100, VFR800, ZX12 etc. Or will an 'international license' be better? I plan on staying in Singapore for at least 2 years, if that makes a difference.

Thx all!

LTA grant license? Shouldn't it be TP (Traffic Police)?

Thanks for the link. Very useful.

The information suggests that I can ride unrestricted in Singapore using my Australian (ASEAN member country) license for a 12-month period. Beyond that I need to convert to an SG license. This means I could move there, buy a 1 litre sport bike, ride it for a year and then, upon converting to an SG license, PROVE that I'm capable of riding the bike I've been riding for the last 12 months!

Crazy system!
