hey guys...this is my first time riding a2nd hand bike and it give me problems when I was to renew the Road tax.

1st...I buy the bike and then receive all the paperwerk. Notice that the Road Tax is expiring soon.. Then Receive letter from LTA of my successful ownership of the bike and also given an extended Road Tax till Dec 21..me very happy..

2nd.. on the 21 DEC, I went down to STA to renew my Road Tax.. (don't ask me why i dont go to AXS machine)..Then the Aunty over there say my insurance expires in 17th May 2008..and the new road tax will end in 21st Jun 2008...so she cannot renew the road tax. I say to her "Aunty, the government gave the road tax like that to me, why cannot?"....Feeling fustrated, hot and furious...I went to the bike shop and ask how come cannot...they say that i need to extend my insurance to be the same as the Road Tax Expiry....I was like  ...!@$@#$@!$@#@#$%@#$%#$@%#$@%#@$%#@$%..(take in deep Breath)...#$%#$%#$%#$@#%$#%3

now I like paying the insurance extention..plus road tax...plus a fine (which was uncalled for) because they told me they sending my application tmr, 22nd Dec (my roadtax expired).....Sian..........:dot:

Now I learn my lesson....FISH FISH FISH.........(take ish and put in UCK)

 Ride like the wind, you can feel my wind or rather taste it.....

What you have described is the procedure that has been there for many years.

Your insurance must cover the whole period of your road tax (to reduce the incidence of uninsured vehicles on the road). It is your duty as the owner to get your insurance to cover the period of the road tax that you want to renew - see your road tax renewal notice.

To save yourself the late payment fees, you could, in all likelihood, have paid the road tax at the insurer's office.

for such cases when the road tax renewal date (on a per year basis, NOT half yearly basis) and insurance policy expiry dates do not correspond w/ one another, u guys can approach the insurance companies to purchase extension of insurance policy date.

e.g. if u need 3 more mths of extension then get 3 mths of extension only.

insurance companies do not otherwise, allow purchase of insurance coverage for

another thing to note here is that, u can request extension of insurance, but not road tax. road tax expiry dates are fixed and tied to the date of registration of the vehicle.

Here's what I do nowadays.

2nd hand bike, above 3 years, needs inspection. So here's how.

1) Go maintenance and servicing.

2) Go inspection, get cert

3) Go insurance company (I use NTUC.) Purchase insurance up to Road tax dates.

4) Pay for road tax together.....

So that everyyear, I only need to pay all 3 things together.

Thanks guys....I mean it sux for those who buy second hand vehicles...

What I did was...

1. wentto the bike shop, get extenstion on the insurance to have the dates same as the road tax..about 35 days...I have to pay S$60+ and the Road tax (6 mth) S$60+....bewarned that the shop will charge admin charges...

2. Then I go home..take my pillow....and plant my head in the pillow and i ............@#$%#@$%@#$%@#^%#$^#$^%@#$%$#......

3. Learn my lesson.....next time i buy...I check properly...

So when you get your bike, you don't get the shop to do for you the paper work?:dot:

its better tt u start learning the rules and regulations of owning a bike in sgp. shops need to earn, they will charge u for paper work which u can easily do urself. so after the initial paper transfer after buying from shop, best is not to go there for paper work.

alternatively, buying second hand from private owners is better.

Woah this is very informative thanks man. I think when i have to renew my insurance i juz go down to e.g AXA and ask extension. Is it expensive?

they will probably pro-rate the premium according to the length of extension u need.

nowadays w/ the rising insurance premium, quite hard for it not to be expensive.

i was trapped in this situation whereby i need to extend my insurance for another 3mths to align it correctly with my road tax expiry date. but i din't want to do the 3mth extension w/ my current insurer (cause their rates shot up).

turns out that none of the other insurance companies are able to do the extension for me cause minimum they accept for new policies is for a full year. lan lan have to pay high premium for the 3mth extension w/ current insurer. :giddy:

Anyway, these procedures are the same for when you buy a new bike and rode it for 3 years. The differences in road tax and insurance dates could also be that you pay for 6 months road tax instead of 1 year road tax on occasions when you are short of money.
