I second changin the chain.

Any solvent that removes the rust is very likely to also strip the protective coating and seals, and may even eat the metal. At best you will have a chain that will quickly rust again, at worst you will have a chain with weakened metal links.

Regular chain spray even when bike not in use to prevent rust from forming in the first place is the proper chain maintenance.

It's true: it's more fun to ride a slow bike fast than to ride a fast bike slow. Admittedly, though... It is MOST fun to ride a fast bike fast!

I'd use a toothbrush with coke and wd-40 to derust it.

But i'd also recommend you to change a new chain as well.

i found this interesting piece. a biker on an overseas bike forum wrote in to tsubaki (yeah the chain brand) asking about chain maintenance.

i find it interesting that contrary to popular belief, the o-ring seal will not wear regardless wat you do to the chain. and that they actually recommend WD-40. but advised against kerosene.

and this is from tsubaki themselves. my opinions about motorcycle chains has changed a little now.
