It's happening to me!!!

Checked my engine oil level using the dip stick today ... and got a shock ...cannot detect engine oil! Only when I brought it upright than can see ... below the 'low' level ! And it's only 1000 plus km away from my last oil change !!!

I want my warranty honoured! lol!

Just some update, Feroz aka Nancyboy riding the CBR1000 08 for Team Loois in the coming Malaysia Super Series has passed away after 3 days in coma.

Sorry to hear that bro.

Catfish, you have to put the bike upright to check oil level.

Ok. Thanks for the correction.

But still it was below the lower mark...the oil level barely touched the tip of the stick.

You're still doing it wrong, LOL.

This is how I do it, start engine, sit on bike so it is upright, after a min, stop engine, take out dip stick while you're seated & bike is upright, wipe clean with tissue, put it back but don't screw in ... 3 mins after the engine has stopped, pull out dip stick and check level.

Now, go check and let us know if you're losing oil.

Hey! Wait a minute....That was what I did dude.

LOL! I sound like a problem kid on the CBR forum.... problem after problem.

Honda made the bike so good but failed to put a glass window to check the engine oil level.

I bring it in last time. i can try again if the quantity is acceptable. Any bike shop should able to fix it, possible just $30 or something. Only have to see if they model for the 08 Honda is ready. What i know is they don't do stacks for 08 1000 Honda as they say the mid range is already good enough

But the glass window would be more convenient isn't it?

Pardon my ignorance but this is my 1st Honda litre bike...my previous bikes had the windows...which I can actually see the level and the colour of the oil.

Well, u still have to bring the bike upright to see the correct level right? It kinda of hard to judge the bike is actually upright when u have to balance the bike and squat down to view the mirror.

Eh...Actually for Yamahas the glass windows were designed to read from the markings with the bike on the side stand....

Well it doesn't really matter does it?

My point is .... the OIL LEVEL is only touching the tip of the dip stick right now! Even with the bike positioned upright!

...which means the engine is burning the oil.

*another indication that the engine is burning the oil is splatters of black oil stain at the end can of the exhaust.

I know the problem, but didn't expect it to be that bad.

Jus wanna try a honda engine for a change.

Doesn't matter whether I know or not ... really, I just think honda should be responsible to have these problems resolved.

If honda doesn't admits it then I'll have to find out other means, ie. thru forums to ask around if there are alternative solutions to these problems.

Well isn't the forum for such a purpose? I posted all these complaints so that I get response from you guys right ;)

This machine is powerful and it's very manageable and I like it. But like every other bikes, it is not perfect.

Don't have to feel sorry about anything. It was my decision to get the bike.

Thanks for your thought.

Could using a thin oil viscocity be another reason? I encountered with OWS oils whereby i find it too thin, and by 3 days of riding the EO inside my crankcase was only like..1/2 left ?

Pre RR8 has the glass window to check oil level, I think the reason why they went with the dipstick is that, they want to make the RR8 for action heroes. Imagine for a moment that someone cuffed you, all you need to do is get to the bike, pull out the dipstick and unlock the cuffs, then ride away in a dramatic fashion to save yourself. Sounds like a script for a Hollywood blockbuster if you ask me.

LOL, I'm just taking a shot there.

I guess for people who are not comfortable with balancing the bike with one hand while squatting down to check the oil level, the dip stick is the way to go. The only gripe is that, I must have tissues, and then I have to disposed of them properly.

The black stains on the exhaust tip is not oil actually. If you've actually looked at the exhaust tip when you start your bike, you can actually see water droplets forming. The water droplets combine with the carbon/soot form the black dotted stains. Honda built a very green bike if you ask me.

I've checked many times for the oil burning issue, so far nada.

Catfish, try waiting for 5 mins, does it help??? I can't remember whether it's supposed to be 3 or 5 mins. Someone check the manual.

What is your riding style btw? Always high rev, high rev deceleration???

If the bike is burning oil, you should see white smoke, not black or rainbow color.

1/2 left???!!! thats bad! What oil did you change afterwards? Does oil still gets burn now?

I'll check on that. I'm using mineral oil still...within 5000km.Not sure about the viscousity level of the oil tho...just change only... for the 1st servicing.

But what people are saying on other CBR forums is that it has got something to do with the piston ring. Some changed that, and it worked for them but there's no guarantee.

I wonder if anyone is doing that locally....

Didn't notice smoke but there's definitely black splattered oil stains at the end of the exhaust.

I use only up to 5th gear on SG roads...well my revs doesn't exceed 6000rpm there. There are instances where I'll go on a speed frenzy but not more than 8000rpm. And only 2 sessions in PG 3rd gear 12000rpm max...high decelerations here too .

That's the range I go to on different occasions.

Yes...I pull hard on my throttle...like I was riding my Fazer... I know its wrong. LOL.

....reading the manual now.

Honda specified the recommended viscousity to be used in areas where temp range is above 30 degree celsius - SAE 10W40 ... which is a thicker oil. - Owner's Manual

Out of curiosity, I just went to check on my bike again, I've done over 1000km on the 5W40 Maxum 4Ultra, just after 1 min after the engine stopped, the oil level was at the 2/5 mark.

My riding style is usually 3000rpm to 6000rpm in SG, hitting redline in JB, some serious deceleration as well, looks like no problem for me.

No oil stains at the exhaust tip, just the usual dotted soot stains.

the dip-stick is still the traditional way of checking oil levels...

i just read a mag which just was talking about this dip-stick.

why risk dropping ur bike when checking through the glass alone...
