Really? But bike shop still selling at $380-$420? Or reduced price? Because china labour cost and materials cost much much cheaper than Germany labour cost and materials cost.

Seriously if it's the same price, I rather have made in Germany tyres than made in china ones. I trust German products more than china products. First, because Germany produces high end sports cars and bikes while china doesn't. Second, the brand started in Germany, shouldn't they be more experienced in producing better quality tyres than a new comer like china? Third, the cost and quality of the tyres used might be different and the labour cost different too.

Michelin tyres for class 2 some r made in Thailand thus cheaper than Bridgestone... My rear tire only oreidi cost $350... So a pair , above $500.. Damnnn ..

Anyone can give me career advice on being a motorcycle mechanic?

 

I'm 25 this year and I know I may be late compared to others. I was foolish not to have chased after my passion when I was younger. Now I want to start off wrenching motorcycles as a career as it makes me very happy to see a downed ride up and running again.

 

What courses should I take? Should I work part time in a workshop just to see and smell more?

Automotive engineering... Light vehicles... Ite offer this course... But I think it would be better if u directly go to a bike shop and ask if they wanna hire u on job training, tell them u don't mind the pay, because if u really passionate about it, u wouldn't mind the low allowance until you're confirmed full timer there. Maybe about $600-$800 a month would be ok... Better than u paying $200-$300 every 6 months to ite and get nothing in return every month. Still have to pay your own meals, petrol, hp bills and bike maintenance. Not sure if any bike shop would do that or not.

Take it from one who works in the automotive industry. Don't follow your passion blindly. The industry that you're going in to is very small. Not much chances for your progress. Unless of course u want to be wrenching bikes all your life. Or want to be like LAB big boss.

 

Otherwise, steer clear and go find another industry that's similar in nature but can offer u progress.

you already have the answer...in your last line...go for it!

 

try first, see if it is for you, you might quit or you might stay on for a lifetime, who knows?...if you never try you never know...25 only, if you think it is late, when can you try? 35? 45?...no worry, try first talk later...

 

it is not easy...most people spend their entire lives not having their passion...you must try when you still have the passion...

 

what can go wrong? at most, you will find out it is not for you or not much money...then you can quit & change later lah...but you will always gain the experience & the enjoyable period in your life, no matter how brief...nobody can take that away from you...:thumb:

 

i am way older than 25, but i would have done it if fixing bikes was my passion, but my real passion is riding them not fixing them, i have not much mechanical interest, if i had, i will have done it even if i am in my 40s...

completely disagree...viability is dependant on whether you can find a niche to make it work out, if you follow what everyone else is doing, you will only get what everyone else is getting, which will only erode in 'returns' cause more people will flock to it, increasing competition, reducing " returns"...

 

what he should do is do what he loved, learn the basics, enjoy the time, nobody can take that away...who knows he might make it big? even if he can't, he can always use his skills to diversify into other related areas, right?

 

besides what is wrong with wrenching motorbikes all their lives? some people do just that...

In any industry, you can either be a follower or a trailblazer. Both need experience, but the latter one requires vision, creativity, experimentation, and balls. Bruce mentioned about niche area, it's something that is very true. Many bikeshops in Singapore. Ah Chong's Planet Motors is touted as one of the best servicing here, While i know Racewerkz specialise into Dynojet. Pretty sure other bike shops have their niche areas also. So if you identify an area to excel in, surely, can go far in any industry.

And if I join the bikeshop now, I doubt they'd will be free to let me go for course on company time. It'll be a 10am-8pm job. 6 days a week.

 

Would I be more valuable if complete the course?

don't quit first, do some 'volunteering' on your free time after work, eg. nights in shops which open till night, or on weekends...any time you free, take it as a hobby, do it on your own time, hands on your own bikes & friends who do not mind...

 

step by step, don't rush in or skip steps...help out your mechanic...

Of course if u have the basics in automotive engineering, your chances that a workshop hiring u would be higher. Given an example, a person who has 1 year experience in automotive workshop compared with a person who just graduated from ite with automotive engineering certificate and a person who has no experience and no certificate. The person with 1 year experience has a higher chance of getting hired than the person with the certificate only. And the person without any experience and cert, no need to say, hard to get hired.

My present job pay is not high but there is alot of OT hence more chance to earn. I'm working 44hours a week compared to 54hours a week at the bike shop. When bike shop pays maybe 4 dollars an hour less without the chance for OT or time in the evening for studies.

 

Not appropriate to say which shop here. They offered me the position with a starting pay of 1700 before CPF but must work 9hrs a day, 6 days a week. From my house its almost one end to the other end of the island. Its a reasonable offer i admit. But is it worth going now and risk the chance for studies? But if i'm working there I will gain experience.

 

Its a chance of experience vs studies. now if I join them they'll probably send me for course in the future but its surely not on company time. If I dont quit my current job I'll go for night classes at ITE and take 1 and a half years to complete. What do you all think? The course wouldn't be expensive I heard.

Hey, for all u know, the shop might even sponsor for that course if u work long enough. And anyway, in this industry, experience pays more than certificates. But having certificates will increase your salary. This kind of industry is the same as construction industry. Experience more than certificates. Experience more important than certificates. Certificates u can get it anytime u want, experiences is a different thing altogether. If there's a chance to gain experience, I wouldn't say no. Especially if I enjoy doing the thing that they're offering... :)

I'm sure some shops would take in part timer. Name have been mentioned. Better to learn from mechanic that work like doctor than just being contented to work as a typical mechanic. That's if u want to follow your passion.

Ya lo ya lo. Some mechanics don't just repair the bike, they'll enhance the bike, make it better and safer. Optimize the performance of the bike is what I say. Some just repair and don't give a sh!t about the rider. Like my previous mechanic. Keep grumbling. Change tyre to a different size he can't do it, ask me to go other shop and do. 2b bike tyre so difficult to change? Anyway, I found my current mechanic, he helped me change the tyres, and I've been going back there for almost 3 years now... He's one of those mechanics that go the extra mile...

Dun quit ur current job unless ur savings r enough cover at least 6-12 mths of ur current pay... Take part time studies in Automotive like being suggested by some pple here... Whenever got chance, go to e bikeshop where they know u n help out for free.. N dun go there empty handed, buy coffee or pack of ciggarette for e mechanic that u going to get e knowledge from... Once u got e knowledge then help to service ur frens bike with no labour charge coz u need to hands on to apply ur knowledge in order to gain experience.. Again, u need e proper tools in order to do e wrk, dats where u need to invest... Yup it takes time, a long time but u will enjoy e fruits of ur labour later when pple will starts to look for u to service their bikes n only want u to do it coz words travel dat ur a very good bike doctor... :)

The course is not expensive. I heard I can pay finish 90% with my edusave. I sure enjoy the job. but from what I heard I'll get a better pay with the cert just fresh out of school. Can maybe be chief mechanic or workshop supervisor if I work for a year or 2? Without the cert I think no chance. The risk is taking up the job offer and getting stuck with low pay without the assurance that they will send me for course.

i said i disagree with only 1 of your opinions, what flaming? we are all here to discuss different points of view, i can accept that others who have different views from mine...if we disagree, big deal, we should just carry on with our lives...who knows one day we might agree on other issues, life is like that...

 

life is too short to go around hating people who hold different views from us, especially just in a forum, there is no conflict of interest just views...i will never bother to go round flaming people, trolling others & just attack for the sake of hating an individual who just happen to differ from me on 1 issue...no vendetta, no hatre, no flaming, no trolling...cause i don't gain anything from doing that...my ego does not need such actions to nurse it.

 

this is a forum, why so serious?...i carry on with my life, troll wastes his time & energy hating me, instead of thinking of ways to improve his life, blame others, blame TP, blame his fate & destiny he was born with...

 

we might 1 day agree on other issues, we only differ on our attitudes towards life...

 

i have seen a bit on the industry, i know it has issues...but the thing is every industry has its own particular issues, i have worked in many different industries in various jobs, no where is perfect or else i would have stayed & perhaps be a rich man by now...

 

the key is are you interested or passionate enough to stay on & solve the problems? i have no interest in mechanical aspects of biking, so i am not a bike mechanic...but i encourage people with passion or interest to pursuit their interest & solve the problems...

 

using LAB as example, some hate him, some love him, but ultimately he is doing what he wants to do, i am not LAB fan, just a occassional customer...but i respect people who do in what they believe in doing...overcome problems with the industry...

 

seriously, i came across many people from all walks of life with different occupations & almost all ( apart from the civil service ) gave me the feedback that there are many problems,

 

singapore is small, so any industry im sg is small, right? if the market was big, there will naturally be more cut throat competition, so still back to square root of one.

 

no prospects? then create your own prospects...i personally take this approach but i admit i have not being successful, but still i enjoy the process of seeking for the success...even now, i have not given up despite my lack of success, others laugh, so what? the wise will not, those who laugh are those that lack the courage to make things happen & yet mock those with courage...while they end up hating what they do...

 

the wise ones will respect the decisions of others, even if they take a different path...we are not robots, not clones, we are individuals that deserve respect...:thumb:

 

edit: ticks, still friends ok! i respect your views, i think they are legit & are true, just that i encourage a different approach to it...if every one runs away from those problems, the problems grow bigger, the whole industry declines...customers like us suffer...we are all connected...
