hi, I'm used to be a sportsbike rider, rode my CBR900 for few years and sold it last year due to under utilise (driving most of the time).

now we have a dirt track at tuas, so i think of getting a entry level scrambler.

i would like to enquire about what brand and model of scrambler suitable for a 1.7m guy? I prefer a class 2B scrambler because i will use it during weekend only, dont want to spend too much on rd tax and insurance.

prefer something that can do dirt riding, tough and can withstand crashing.

all input are welcome. thanks. :)

actually ktm2 is not really entry level.. ktms are ready to race machines.. the condition of the bike really depends on your luck.. for KTMs, you can go check out DirtWheel which is located at the industrial estate behind Tampines Safra.. :)

wr200 and ktm200 for a good entry level bike to play track and trail esp if u aren't using it for transport.

ktm is really WOOHOO. hmmm 1.7m, maybe consider getting a short fork model ktm, but u cant take big jumps at the track. then again i guess height isnt a problem but its just for the extra feeling of safety.

what model do i need to look into for a short fork model?

I don't think i'll do any big jump anytime from now, i'm always a sportsbike guy, just and amature in dirt riding, got lots of things to learn.

Is dirtwheel has WR200 as well?

shortfork is meant for motard. gives more confident in trailing and track cos ur leg can touch the ground anytime and u wont drop ur bike as much. but taking jumps would be tricky as the fork may bottom out.

usually recommended for lighter (thin) and short pple. i am 1.78 and have a short fork model but im already tiptoing with both feet on the ground. actually given choices, go directly for the long fork if u are a confident rider cos with a long fork u can do anything hehe.

thanks for all your advises.

register at slackrider le, lots of info.

other than WR200 and KTM200, what do you guys think about DR200 and XR200? they are 4 strokes and more user friendly.

can anyone advise me roughly how much is the insurance for 200cc scrambler? I'm 29 this year.

1.78 already tiptop, then 1.7 how? im also thinking of getting a scrambler. height also at 1.7.

erm 3rd party for u shd be around 300?

2nd and 1st party varies with scram model, and NTUC doesnt do first party for older scrams.

4 strokes power band is more linear, 4 strokes are heavier too. not good for tracks i reckon cos u need more torque and less weight to accel and jump. On the other hand, 4 stroke has good FC, is relaxing and more than sufficient for offroad trailing and transport

well my tiptoe means im seated squarely on my butt. both legs can touch the ground with my tip of the toe. If u are 1.65, u still can ride a full height scram, just lean ur butt to one side and one foot tip toe while the other foot is on your foot peg. ive seen this one joker, one foot on the ground. butt totally off the seat and the other leg hanging over the seat at the traffic light. just make sure u dun fall on the other side.

it wasnt really meant for motard....the whole idea of the ktm shorty fork n rear shock is wrong..... short fork /shocks tense to bottom ups veri easy.. get the long fork straight... u dont want to wait then change to long fork the convertion is expensive

I m standing at 1.73 with long forks... got a friend riding xr4 standing at 1.58....

Slow nevermind.... Pattern must be nice.... Bike must be BLING...

ok then short forks are for girls. haha damn im a girl. no but seriously, road handling is better for shorter forks esp if u are on motard setup. lower cg, stiffer springs than longs translate to better road holding. of course if u wanna talk about above ground zero then short forks will bottom out more.

oh ok, thats cool. shall see how my TP goes then, still a very long way for me. hahah that must have been a rare sight. but it seems so dangerous to tip toe with a pillion too right?

with the kind of jumps...how impactful is the shorty bottoming out...

unless u are a freestyler then it matters lah... i think for our normal TM or Tuas track, it will hold-on... shorty fork are more sturdy...:-)

hi,guys n gals.

riders seating with their butt off the seat, height etc etc.... irregardless of yr height/weight most modern day trail bikes are adjustable. but most of the riders here don seem 2 do it! the suspension sag is the most basic step. so it really doesn't matter at all. shorty forks r 4 motard but even nowadays most motard riders r using the long travel forks. the diameter of most of the shorty fork n long travel forks r abt the same,so the sturdiness of the forks is not a issue. s 2 answer the original question, abt the best bike..... 4 now a ktm 200 from the model year 2003 onwards would be the best 1 4 yr needs.

thanks guys for your great and useful input.

KTM200 seems to be the best bike for entry level dirt bike.

but it is kind of expensive, i can't get a 4~5k bike as my wife will nag at me.

i'm looking for something about 2k, so i guess WR200 is closer to my budget.

will go to dirt bike shop to see see the bike first.

Tuas track, i think definitely can bottom out the shorty man, maybe i shd get it adjusted to be stiffer.
