School re-open this Monday, back to jam everyone. Ride safe.

It's still June. Sure it's this Monday and not the next?

All good times come to an end, that includes the jam-free Farrer road at 7+ am during the school holidays. Farrer road has gotten worse in this year. Now it is even jammed at 7am!

(I'm very sure a gantry will go up once the construction ends.)

I don't understand the phenomenon very well, but I have three hypothesis:

1. Parents don't need to drive to schools. This is obvious. The question is, how many of them are there?

And it doesn't seem that all roads have less traffic. I have a colleague who bemoan school holidays because the roads near his home would be clogged up instead -- due to drivers driving straight to work?

2. Traffic density. All roads are designed to hold a certain number of cars. Once it is exceeded, traffic slows down exponentially.

An example is right-turn lanes. They can hold a small number of cars before they spill onto the main lanes. Once they do, the straight through traffic will slow to a trickle.

3. "Inconsiderate" drivers. People just park beside the road to let their kids alight. School buses blocking the leftmost lane to let people board and alight.

You may think one lane less out of three means the traffic slows down by a mere 1/3, but if you are ever stuck in one, you know the traffic slows down by 300% or more!

Hi all

i think i found another source for the congestion during school holidays and maybe a reason to the mysterious lousy lady driver problems.

Here's my observation: when riding to work this morning, i saw a lot of lady drivers in casual wear, some even look like they are in pyjamas, driving kids to schools. These lady drivers are not seen during holidays.

i believe what happened is there are family with 2 or more cars. these lady drivers are homemakers and usually drive say, at 9am or later during school holidays to market etc. During school days, they will have no choice but to drive the kids to school, thus increase the traffic volume. Same apply to grandparents.

This also resulted in bad lady drivers cos there is quite a period of time they were driving at low traffic volume, suddenly they have to drive in heavy traffic or vice versa. As we all know, driving needs practice and being used to the environment, thus this may cause the lady drivers to be weaker as they were still in the period of adjustment.

what do you all think?

coming to the topic of ERP.. i simply dun understand y traffic slows down just before the gantries.. the timing i go pass it is not as if the price is going to reduce in sec or even minutes.. drivers should already know they are going pass it so they should have their cashcards WITH SUFFICIENT VALUE IN THE IU already.. they want to see the correct amount being deducted.. wah lau can be wrong 1 meh (correct me if i am wrong)

which only leaves me to wonder.. is it very shiok to see the cashcard value drop everytime they pass the gantry?

They plant those gantries there, "just in case."
