[Trip Report] Koh Phangan Ride : 19 to 25 May 08

So my little meh meh sprouted a pair of fins and decided to swim cross the clear blue seas of the Gulf of Thailand to some of the most exotic destinations in Thailand...

 

Earlier on...

Was with some friends in Cameron Highlands for a retreat, then... I was posessed like a spirit towards the land of a thousand smiles.

The next morning, i set off for Surat Thani.

 

While heading out of Hatyai, came across these goats again.

 

They were here last year, they were here in Feb when i went for my solo in northern Thailand (LINK HERE), they were here 2 weeks ago while i was in Hat Yai, now they are still here?!

Most of the ride towards Surat Thani was rather uneventful, having covered that road before, it started to become boring, till....

 

IT STARTED POURING!

 

Those who are experienced with Thai roads would know that it is not exactly fun to be on the Thai highways in the rain.

 

Made the turn off from the main highway towards Surat Thani at about noon, and came across this straight road which stretches as far as the eye can see.

Pump prices near the coast. Petrol near the coast and in major towns are generally cheaper. Expect to pay up to 5Baht more per liter in more rural areas and further inland.

the little town of DON SAK, a place which serves as nothing much more as the port of call for ferries heading towards KOH SAMUI and KOH PHANGAN.

 

Ferries to KOH SAMUI leave every one hour. (1hr 30min ride)

Ferries to KOH PHANGAN leave every two hours. (2hr 30min ride)

Obviously i was not really in a hurried mood to disembark. The first thing that caught my eye after disembarking the ferry.

Koh Phangan's tourist ambassador then trotted over to my bike to welcome me to the island.

Proceeded to spend the next 2 hours hunting for a place to stay for the night. Rates in Koh Phangan during the full moon party are horribly expensive!

I managed to find a room in a guesthouse for 4 pax, at 1,600 baht a night. Not exactly the best of deals but had to make do with it as it was the only room left in the whole Haad Rin area.
