If u referring the pic above, and u got the time to do it and wanted to save cost, DIY is the best.

Can simply use paint remover to do it. Just that u must be careful with the acid because I got fed and use my finger to grab the cloth with the acid on it. End up numb for 1weeks.

Use a masking tape to do the lining. Then use brush to paint over, apply for few times inorder for it to peel it off. Normally the back tyre rim is easily to come out then front. Perhaps due with some grease on it. :)

Good luck.

Hi there,

When I bought the bike, my rims is already like this. I always thought it is like this by default because I never observe other vtecs. Isn't it stock? It has been "editted" ? Hehe... I don't know =(

For that masking tape qtn, i aint sure. Koz i never use it at all :p I merely use my judgement because there's smooth metal and rough type so I paint it along the line. But anyway, thats a line ard the rim. ( U can see ahlex@sgbikes 's Rim.)

So far I observe that it wun corrode, so far so good. Just that Iit get dirty very fast. But I find it very tedious to polish it until bright and shiny. hehe... good luck. U can ask the guy selling the paint remover whether that what will happen it the paint is applied on masking tape as well.

Rem to be careful and bring water along so that you can clean it with clean water.

gd luck dude. U gonna spend at least few hour for that to make sure it peel off. Rem that you have to take ur time to let it peel. apply coat by coat.

Then u be able to see a wonderful nice rim. heee... WOo!!

use a brush to apply on the rim is much more easier to do it . and be careful dun let the paint remover touch the tire . wipe it off once it touch ur tire . :giddy:

Hi there,

I would suggest that you bring your bike to the professionals. Otherwise you might regret if it does not turn out to be the way you want it to be.

On top of that, the rims were already like that when I got the bike. It wasn't done by me.

Good luck man. Keep plenty of clean cotton waste rags handy.

There was another thread advising the use of emery paper to make the coating thin before you start, so that the job's easier. If you think the paint remover might be tough or risky, use emery paper. It will be tedious, but you can't make any mistakes. Use a combination of both techniques, and you could do well. Maybe use the paint remover to take off the top coats and finishing it with emery paper.

Good luck. Tell us how it went! :)

this afternoon was raining... I went down at 4pm to my bike to look look see see. Then itchy, took out the paint remover, masking tape, paper towels, rubber gloves, newspaper and pail of water with rag. I started to do the jod DIY.

I taped the inner rim and outer rim with masking tape, then brush paint remover over the black paint. after 2 minutes, the paint soften and i use paper towel to wipe off and polish the remainder. then rinsed with water and removed the tape. One rim both side took me 1.5 hr to complete. I fnished at 7pm. back breaking but very satisfied with the result. Saved $100 by DIY. worth it.

I dun have the pre photo, but will take tomorrow and post it here. Same as the photo above.... Inside rim is black, outer rim chrome now. When it is moving, really nice sia.

Some pointers and lessons learnt.......

1.Use sparingly on the masking tape as the paint remover will soak through the tape and some black paint can come off, but not obvious though, just rough rough.... maybe use duct tape as it is waterproof.

2. Put bike on main stand and rear rim can be easily rotated. But front rim, have to life up bike at front manually. So I placed a children bicycle between exhaust header to support bike up, so that front rims can rotate freely. Easier this way.

3. Wear rubber gloves (disposable type) and avoid contact with remover. Even the brush when flicked, will cause bits of paint dropping to cause burning sensation on skin. I accidentally sat on some black paint dropping and felt the sensation.. I jumped!!

4. Have some music or cig to combat boredom. Can be pretty broring doing it alone in carpark... ventilation is important.

Total cost of project: Paint remover $4.30 rubber glove $0.20, brush $0.50, paper towels $1.80 ......compared to professional who charge $100 for the job.

Congrats on your new rims...

Almost as imp as saving money (if not more) is the sense of satisfaction of a DIY job well done! :)

Now you can flaunt your polished rims, as it's your effort entirely!

Only the outer side chrome ah, not the whole rim, rite? D.I.Y lah bro.. i did it for my kips b4, but not on my s4 coz I plan to spray it gold.

Anyway, I used paint remover and a brush (used my old painting brush from sec sch :cheeky:) and slowly wiped it across a small area of the outer rim. After that, I used a scrapper and gently wiped the excess paint off. The paint remover made it extremely easy to scrap the black paint off, took about 1 hr to finish a whole rim. Then you can use metal polish to make it shiny.
