Hi all,

I managed to pass TP for the first time and just want to share my experience.

Arrive CDC at 7am. Instructors will start taking attendance and allocate number for each candidates. I noticed that sorting is typically by age in descending order. Hence, the older candidates get to start first (youngest one will be the last)! The instructors at CDC are very helpful and they still try to give tips before TP starts. During the first hour, we get to practise around the circuit, you get to try out 2 different bikes. Once finished, you have to wait at the training shed.

When TP starts, you will be called out in groups of 5. You can only take the bikes from the bike pool (there are about 40 bikes), the earlier candidates get to choose bike.

General rule

Checking back: make sure your head is over shoulder. Remember to check mirror before that. Check mirror, clear then signal intention and then head over shoulder.

Kerb check:If kerb is on your right, check back left. If kerb is on your left, check back right. This applies for chevron marking.

Pre-riding check (not in any order)

Check horn

Check front brake lights

Check rear brake lights

Check hazard lights

Check tyre pressure

Check foreign objects on tyres

Check headlights

Check expire tag

Start area

On left signal. Wait for tester to give the signal. Always check right for incoming traffic first. Once clear, then apply kerb check. Once go onto lane and pass first arrow, quickly check right blindspot and at the same time change gear 2. On right signal and gradually change to right lane. Form up 2 rows at stop line.

T Junction

There is a right wall blocking so after at stop line, inch your bike out (roughly half the bike) until your left foot can step on the white line. Check right and left for traffic. Do not be scared of vehicles, try to estimate the distances. If the vehicle is 3 car length away, there is ample time to move off. Once clear, check back right and proceed to right turn.

Slope

First obstacle is slope. When approaching, downgear to gear 1 until stop. Apply kerb check, then on signal to prepare to move off. While still on front and rear brake and half clutch, on throttle until u feel the clutch biting then release brake. When going down slope, use engine brake. Hands off the clutch.

Figure of 8

Wait for beam signal. When approaching the start line, switch to gear 2 and off signal. When going through the bend, always look in the centre of the grass patch to balance the centre of gravity. When exiting, try to reach the further end so that turning will be easier. While exiting, switch to gear 1 and stop.

Crank course

When approaching start line, switch to gear 2. When turning, body must lean against the turn (if turning right, body lean against left). When about to exit, watch for traffic from right or traffic from opposite (cars exiting from S course). If you need to stop, remember to stop after the exit line (tester will continue to count if you are behind the exit line).

Plank

This is the killer for most people. Position yourself exactly straight in the middle before moving off so that you do not have to adjust when going on plank. When up on the plank, legs hug the bike and eyes watch the far end of the cone. Remain half clutch to cross slowly and fingers on front brake. try not to touch the rear brake so that bike will not wobble.

Slalom

When approaching, switch to gear 2. Eyes focus on each cone as you pass (other posts suggest focus on the exits). You can attempt wider turns so that its easier to maneuver. When exiting, no need to right signal/ change lane. Instructor will make sure there is no car obstructing the path.

Emergency brake

Make sure you are above 30km and the light is on. Once cross the line, arms straightened and apply front brake and then rear brake. Once the bike reaching to a stop then clutch in. While hands on brake, check right and then put right foot down. Down gear to gear 1 and then check left to put left foot down. Check back right and then signal right and prepare to move off. When approaching the exit, check back right for vehicles. If vehicles are very far away, its safe to exit. Once finished, proceed on your own out to the road.

Road - Test route 1

There are about 5 testers situated out on the road, they will sit around at CDC exit, First right turn, Filter left, U-turn. At CDC exit, remember to stop at Stop line. After that inch out your whole bike beyond the stop line and check for traffic from both directions. On test date, there is usually alot of traffic. The first right turn is usually challenging because there is jam and the truck/large vehicle may not give way so be patient. On my test, I had to wait at lane 1 until vehicles give way to me so I can change to lane 2 so that I can proceed to filter lane. At filter lane, stop in single line. Check right for incoming vehicles and also look out for U-turn vehicles. If there is a jam at expressway entrance, wait for vehicles to give way to you (You can inch out until the jam lane).

Remain last lane until you approaching nearer to the overhead bridge, start to signal right and change land progressively until lane 1. While stopped at traffic light, apply kerb check. First bike may proceed and stop in between the 2 white lines (pedestrian crossing), 2nd bike have to wait behind white line. When U-turn, do not exceed the last white line. Turn until you are at 2nd lane then start to keep left. If you notice there is long queue at the 1st lane ahead of you (because of jam at right turn), you need not keep left, instead you can change to lane 1 and join the queue.

Once at right turn, try not keep too right of the road. If the car tries to squeeze in, you may be penalised. At the right turn pocket, remember to stop in the middle (not 2 rows). Right turn pocket can fit about 3 bikes. The rest have to wait behind white line. At the last traffic light, must check for pedestrians, proceed when clear.

When return back to CDC, remain left lane. Once pass the building then change to right lane. At right lane, change to left signal. At chevron marking, only keep 1 row. When moving off, apply kerb check. If you stop at right turn, only can fit max 3 bikes (1.5 car). Check back right then right turn and then back to base.

In the end, I got points for wobble, wide turn and using rear brake when negotiating bend.

great sharing bro.. only point of discussion is the slalom. Generally, one shud be looking at the exit point instead of the obstacle.
