Kieron Dyer

Sam Allardyce will take a keen interest in Kieron Dyer's deployment at right-back for England against Estonia tonight - as he wants to do the same thing with him at Newcastle next season.

Dyer is in line to win his 32nd cap for his country in this evening's crucial European Championship Group E qualifier in Tallinn, with England coach Steve McClaren expected to use the Magpies midfielder as an attacking full-back behind David Beckham.

Despite spending most of his time as an attacking midfielder, Dyer begun his career as a right-back at Ipswich Town and also made his debut for England in that position against Luxembourg in 1999. With Estonia likely to defend deep and in numbers, McClaren has sensibly looked at ways to break down their resistance and Dyer appears to have a key role to play.

Whether McClaren decides to risk him in that position from the start of the game or uses him as an impact substitute remains to be seen, but Dyer - who impressed as a striker in the 1-1 draw against Brazil last week - has been playing in that position in training since the weekend.

Story continues Continue story

Interestingly, McClaren's belief that Dyer can be converted into an attack-minded full-back in a similar mould to Chelsea's Ashley Cole has come just days after Allardyce told the 28-year-old he was interested in using him in a similar role at club level. Allardyce met Dyer and fellow England international Michael Owen at the England team hotel a fortnight ago when he outlined his plans for the reshaping of the club.

While much of the attention has focused on Owen and United's hopes of keeping him, Allardyce was also keen to stress that he wants Dyer to stay. Dyer has already attracted firm interest from Tottenham Hotspur, while there are also rumours circulating in the capital that Chelsea could make a surprise bid this summer as his versatility appeals to manager Jose Mourinho.

But while a large section of Newcastle supporters would welcome the club cashing in on Dyer after eight years on Tyneside, that has not persuaded Allardyce to sell him and he has privately assured the player that he will protect him against supporters' criticism if it continues next season.

Newcastle used Nolberto Solano as an emergency right-back last term, but Allardyce is unlikely to continue with that ploy, while he is also looking for buyers for Stephen Carr.

Allardyce is convinced Dyer can make a successful switch to right-back and he believes it will help rejuvenate a player who appeared to lose confidence and interest at the end of last season when he once again became the target for fan frustration.

Dyer's move to right-back was also once mooted by former Newcastle manager Sir Bobby Robson and the player is understood to have given a favourable response to Allardyce, even if the switch is not a long-term measure.

Like Owen, Dyer was also impressed with Allardyce's plans to rebuild the squad, as well as his ideas to improve things behind the scenes with his specialist support staff, although whether he is willing to stay if an attractive offer is made is unclear.

So many reports of so many players that we wanted to bring in. Habib Beye, David Rozenhal, Alan Smith, Diouf, Emilson, Geremi, Eidur Gudjohnsen, and many more. Also reports of the complete take over by Mike Ashley. But none of which can really confirm. Been checking the net lately, still dont have. Hopefully more will come, and Owen and Martin would not leave.

DAVID ROZEHNAL FACTFILE

Czech International David Rozehnal was Sam Allardyce's third signing as manager of Newcastle United on 29 June 2007 when the Sternberk born defender put pen to paper on a four-year-deal at St. James' Park from Paris St Germain - United beating off competition from Borussia Dortmund for his signature.

David, an accomplished centre-half with 34 international caps to his name, began his career at Sigma Olomouc in 1999 where he played 72 games, scoring twice. He then moved to Club Brugge in 2003 and in two seasons in Belgium he played a further 50 matches, one goal, before transferring to Paris St Germain in July 2005.

David played for the Czechs at Euro 2004 in Portugal and also in Germany at the 2006 World Cup - playing against USA, Ghana and Italy in the opening round as the Czechs surprisingly crashed out of the tournament after the group stage.

Last season at Paris St Germain, David was voted his club's Player of the Season and was also selected in the Ligue 1 team of the season in France.

David played eight times for the Czech Under 21s before making his debut in February 2004 for the senior team against Italy.

David, who will be the second Czech to play for the Magpies, after Pavel Srnicek, remarkably becomes the sixth United player to join the club from Paris St Germain, following in the footsteps of David Ginola (1995), Didier Domi (1998), Alain Goma (1999), Laurent Robert (2001) and Sylvain Distin (2001).
