Don’t expect a raft of arrivals

DESPITE having been linked with an enormous list of players, Kevin Keegan has warned Newcastle United’s fans there may be no more transfer activity at St James’s Park this season.

 

And Keegan has closed the door on Alan Shearer becoming his assistant, though the former Magpies captain could still have a job at St James’s Park, possibly as a part-time forwards coach.

Even with Tottenham Hotspur’s move for Jonathan Woodgate apparently stalling, Keegan seems to be facing up to not landing any of his targets before the transfer window closes on Thursday.

 

Woodgate was yesterday given permission to talk to Spurs but instead of travelling to north London was at Middlesbrough’s Rockliffe Park training complex for a physiotherapy session. “He is one of a number of players we have talked about,” Keegan revealed. “But you have to look at the situations at their clubs and also be realistic.”

 

Regarding Tottenham’s approach for Woodgate he added: “I am not surprised others are interested. He is 28, he is a leader of a kind. I gave him his England debut (in 1999) and know him well. If he goes to Tottenham he will be a fantastic signing for them.” United have been linked with Óscar Cardozo, Luka Modric and Daniel van Buyten among others but, according to Keegan, those targets playing their football abroad will have to wait until the summer.

 

“We are beavering away but we are not looking for lots of people,” he said. “If we get anyone it will be from the domestic game, unless an absolutely massive opportunity drops on our doorstep. We have good people here who know every player all over the world. We have all the data and the computer can pull (their details) up. If an agent calls about a player we can see four or five reports on them, see them playing and make a decision, but we have tended to say that is for another day. We are concentrating on players from this country who are available – I looked at the list and, with the greatest respect, you like all the players on it but know you are not going to get some of them because of price or they may not want to come somewhere where they won’t yet play in Europe.

 

“So when you get around to the realistic targets – and there are not many – if we can’t get them in we won’t make any signing in this window, in or out. We have had inquiries for some of our players but don’t want to get people out, we have not got a big enough squad. Even if it were part of a swap deal I would be very reluctant.”

 

Shearer and Keegan had their long-awaited phone conversation about the former’s coaching future on Thursday, where he confirmed he will not be Keegan’s new assistant. But having inherited so many coaches from Sam Allardyce and added Arthur Cox, the 56-year-old is in no rush to appoint a right-hand man.

 

Keegan is, however, still hopeful of grooming Shearer as his successor. “I spoke with him for four hours,” he revealed. “It was great to see him again. At the end he said, ‘I definitely don’t want to come as a number two at the moment’. But I think he is interested in joining us. He is going to talk about it with Lainya (his wife). She was away and we will talk again on Monday. There is no pressure on him to join us.

 

“The perfect scenario is for him to get more involved as time goes on and eventually take over from me. I have three-and-a-half years on my contract, I will nearly be 60. But that is a perfect world, let’s wait and see what he comes back with.

 

“I have not made a decision on who will be my assistant. I have got a lot of good staff around me. I am not one who needs numbers ones, twos and threes. If I have two or three guys around and if they can all be number twos when I need them that will be okay.”
