What 400cc first hand bike to buy for daily commute and touring?

Hi All,

I'm new to this forum and I'm a nerd on bikes. Recently I just got my 2A license and thinking of buying a NEW 400cc bike with legal exhaust to commute daily for Singapore usage and sometimes short trip to Malaysia before I get my Class 2 license for further touring purposes.

I would like to hear more about bikes regarding Carburettor or FI on which is better. A lot riders mention that if get Super 4 must get Spec 3 on the last batch of carburettors. Is that true?? @_@

FYI, my ideal mode is actually using a 2A bike for daily commute and a Class 2 bike for touring purpose but before I get my Class 2, my 2A shall serve the same purpose for touring also.

Could I have the seniors here to tell me your ideas?

Regards,

Steley.

I like FI more than carbs. I owned 3 carbed bikes before I bought my ZX6R and the difference is huge.

E.g my DRZ every morning when starting you need to do the prime-choke-throttle roll on and off-warm up ritual to start it. ZX6R just turn on, listen to the fuel pump prime it, press the button and go.

Also climb mountain, carburetor not that great, if you only ride in SG it's not so bad, set it up once and leave it, but if you wanna go up Genting or Cameron, depending on how you setup, will start to starve for air close to the top. FI, no such problems, riding is smooth all the way.

The only reason they tell you to buy the Spec 3 with a carb is because SG mechanics do not know how to handle FI systems, so if you buy an FI machine repairs cost more/have to find someone who can do it for you. But the truth is FI is less likely to break down, your carburetor after riding for 3-4 years will probably require rebuilding because of vacuum leaks and change your air/fuel ratio causing poor performance. FI will also develop wear and tear that causes vacuum leaks, but because it is electronically controlled, you still can use it, the computer will adjust the ratio until you get it maintained.

CB400X is pretty damn popular for 2A touring right now. Fuel Injected, pretty solid build quality, not really that expensive brand new.

I don't know what legal aftermarket exhaust they have though, but you can decide later yourself, the exhaust system on a 2A bike is kind of no point.

A MT03 will serve you well enough.

It's cheap. (about $5-6k cheaper than a S4 revo or CB400X, brand new)

It can commute. (handles very well and is very light and slim)

It can tour. (top speed 190+, comfortable cruise up to 160kmph)

It can race. (probably only duke390 can win in terms of pickup)

It looks good with or without box and panniers. or megatubes.

It has lotsa accessories. Windshield, sliders, crashbars, radiator guards, all touring essentials

It has at least 3 legal aftermarket slip-ons (Akra, Leo Vince, Arrow)

It can probably make you forget about upgrading to Class 2, unless you have alot of money to throw then go ahead.

My bikers friends says S4 also quite dangerous in Malaysia if unguarded. Very fast gone from the spot that you park in Malaysia. I think MT03 is better as Malaysia not into that kind of league in their license.

S4 is extra popular to steal in MY, but no bike is safe there la.
