I've set up this thread for drivers who frequent to JB for petrol top up and food.

I guess some of us, if not all, knew that the caltax station nearest to the old JB custom has 2 petrol pump with tilted ground, meaning the ground isn't flat from left to right. This makes it perfect for cars as it would be able to take in more petrol than the standard fuel capacity stated in the manual.

I know in theory it is dangerous.

So, since the new CIQ is up, is there any other petrol station with this "automated tilting ground" for petrol top up?

Please refrain from non-constructive post.

by far, this has got to be the best petrol pump ever. I only used these 2 pumps for car top up.

for bike, of course any petrol station also can.. lol

looks like i may need a trip down with my bike to do a search.

I don't think the Esso in front has this slant, so the caltex should be the best and nearest to Customs.

ok then, looks like caltax is the best petrol station nearest to the custom.

so, lets talk about food.

let's start with some of the common terms used

In Malaysia, when you wanna ordered a cup of Iced Milo, they usually called it Milo Ice

On the menu, Ice = Ais

So, when you see Milo Ais, it means Iced Milo

Roti Prata = Roti Canai (i tink)

Maybe the malay community can help the non-malay community out by providing malay language lessons here..

A tilted ground may give a false reading on the petrol gauge but how does it increase the volume of petrol that can be filled ?

If what you said is true, then a tilted ground, depending on the angle which it leans, would only benefit cars that have fuel point on the opposite side but cars with fuel point on the same side would be filling in less petrol than on a level ground. However, most jap cars are filled from the left side while most continental cars are from the right side.

those cars with fuel intake on the left side benefits the most.

this is how a typical fuel tank looks like when it's tilted

This is a pic of a car fuel tank.

Even tilted at a incredible 10 degree to the advantage of the side of the refueling point, when filled to the neck of the pipe, the increased is still almost negligible

referring to ur 2nd pic, the picture seems a little funny as gravity should have levelled the fuel, and not tilted as if gravity is non-existence.

nonetheless, i've yet to do an experiment. most probably, i'll top up my fuel on a level ground and proceed to top up on a tiled ground to see how much more fuel i can get it.

based on my estimation, i am able to get 10L more.

i'll post my results once it's i have the time to visit up north.

if the fuel tank is indeed this way, den it seems more sense to people who always "shake" their car even after they had topped up till the last drop.

Wha lau.. I think he might have photochopped the pic for us to visualize.. Where got time to redraw to make the fuel level..

BTW I've read somewhere that filing up all the way to the top is bad fo the car.. Think need some air on top for it to work properly, no time to read the whole article..

The fuel level is indicated by the red line.

please refer to my edited pic

by tilting the tank, the tank would be able to take in more petrol as shown in the pic.

i do not really understand the meaning of the red line. perhaps you might want to elaborate. if it is just to show the angle of the tank being tilted, the fuel line should be tilted too.

Hi there,

i've read the article somewhere in the papers too.

there was an article which shows how singapore registered cars were refuelling their cars with a small wooden triangle stopper, (like those stopper used on the SAF 5-tonne vehicle), to tilt their vehicle so as to intake more fuel.

a sub article added that the tank is made with a layer of air just on top of it because of safety reasons. it is to allow the fuel to expand and "evaporate". without the air, the fuel cannot expand and "evaporate" safely and that poses a safety hazzard

nonetheless, i've saw BMW does it, merc does it, jap/korean car does it and no accident has been reported.

it is sort of a "do at your own risk" kinda thing.

Singaporeans and Malaysian Chinese are generally stubborn and snobbish when it come to cars/bikes. There's basically nothing others can do when you meet such people. I've bumped into many of such people who insists they know too much to find out more. And has too little face to lose to eat humble pie to learn. It will usually take personal experiences for people to learn. Take it easy. :)

No need to save that fugging few cents la, go work hard and earn it back.

Under normal scenario is ok, wun have any much problem. Under special cases like the car temp is already overheating and you still go and pump it to the brim and whack like no body business, then good luck! Sometimes u see sg car that crash in NSH, ever tot of is the car fug up and can't react to the expected situation which caused the car to become ninja turtle?

prevention is always better than cure, i have to agree with you

in life, there are certain risk that human takes. it is calculated risk

there are many decision making techniques. of course i'm no saint to teach which decision is the best. it all depends on the risk appetite that the person is willing to undertake

that's why most singaporean parents are so against their child riding a motorcycle on the street because they know the dangers of riding one. that's called prevention. still, children disregards their parents advice and ride one without their knowledge

i've tried using the tilting method and endured in checkpoint jams that last 2.5 hours. so far so gd.

car that crashes in NSH can be due to various reasons. i don't think anyone travelling on the NSH will use the tilting method. only SG drivers in jb going back to SG will do it.

Do u find Malaysian doing tat?

Come on, to share their country's petrol is alreadi making us feel lousy yet some ppl can do the above tactic?

I have seen a Honda fit.

B4 i drove in the petrol station, he have alreadi started pumping.

When i start topping up till finish, this guy still filling up + opening his car boot to do " CPR heart attack " . I paid up, then send my car in for a wash.

Juz imagine, the wash took ard 20 mins. HE STILL HAVE NOT FINISH FILLING!

When i reverse my car to dry, then he finish pumping n paid up.

While I agree that being thrity is a much celebrated virtue espcially during the current economic turmoil, I think that you've misinterpreted the meaning. Being thrifty on items which you do not need is really well accepted. But being thrifty at the expense of certain risk is stingy. If one has to go to such extend of exploitation to justify your expedition, I'd rather not own the car. The tank has been designed to be able to allow buffer space for thermal expansion or accumulation of gas which also generates pressure as fuel dissipates with age. Forcefully filling the tank via foreign elements to tilt the vehicle is not only risky, it also defeats the purpose of the buffer.

Perhaps I can share a little about my European stay. I was stationed in Schweinfurt im middle Deutschland for a few days this year. During the weekend, I drove Southwards to Friedrichshafen and Konstanz to meet a friend. On the way there, fuel costs 1.5Euro/Litre which was slightly more than SGD$3/L. This proved to be much of a toll on my limited Euro as I refrain from accumulating credit card debts. He then goes to explain about the relationship between Austria and Germany. Being an expert in South East Asian cultures, he compared these 2 European neighbours to Singapore and JB in the aspect of consumers' petrol. Germans sometimes cross the border which have since been dissolved with the EU pact to pump the 1.2Euro/Litre petrol in Austria when it's convenient. The SGD$0.6/Litre of savings proved substantial for Germans who stay in Friedrichshafen just close to the border. But they do not go into extends of pumping Austrian fuel which anatomically is the same or even buy a bigger fuel tank at the expense of safety to pump more Austrian petrol. Sad to say... Singaporeans do.

Making the effort to cross the border every now and then even though it's only 25% of the tank, some even tamper with the gauge and suffer legal woes for that little savings. And many Singaporeans call this savings. But I think to a certain extend, scrooge. A car is never a need in Singapore unless you need it for work which companies subsidize. In the first place, you shouldn't even have gotten the car since you cannot afford to pay the fuel. I'm sorry for my bluntness, but I really hope you see the picture I am illustrating with good intentions.

A simple belief. If you need to risk to save, that's stingy. Savings should never carry an adverse price.
