I think its bloody dangerous to used a patched tyre on the track, especially if you are a fast guy.

However, there are always situations that even I will do so against my own judgement, eg: I ride all the way to Sepang and get a nail in the rear. But if you had an alternative, dont do it.

Worm plug or patch, nobody seems to realise that the belting of the tyre has already been compromised! Adding a worm involves enlarging the hole with a tool that damages the belting even more!! And that's what makes the tyre keep its shape and influences how it handles! Not to mention that the hole that is already created is slowly being ripped open bigger and bigger from the forces tearing at the outside of the tyre!

Given that tyre manufacturers manufacture tyres with HUGE tolerances that may probably mean that nothing will happen 9 times out of 10, if you still decided to go for it with a patched tyre.

Everyone seems to be ignoring redbeacon, who pointed out that the tyre flexes alot and the patch/plug will never be able to conform to the flex exactly the same as the actual tyre, which in the end, will works it's way loose and fail, since all that is keeping it there is air pressure from inside the tyre and adhesive. You may not know it but the tyre may be losing air everytime you lean over.

Another thing is reversing tyres - again I wont do it, but many people do saying that it's ok, but I beg to differ - tread pattern has almost no effect in the dry and only becomes a concern in the wet, but what about belting? most tyres (except for a handful like Metzelers who have 0 degree belting) have angled belts and cross plys that are there to influence how the tyre handles - then you go and turn it around and say that there is no difference???????????????????? Then we might as well say that belting has no effect on tyre handling and ask Pirelli, Metzeler & Michelin to stop wasting their time and our money making the tyres so heavy by adding all this belting nonsense.

All I can say is that whoever says there is no difference in handling has probably zero feel for what the tyres are doing or is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo talented that he can overcome all this without even knowing it.

If we can afford to have the luxury of going to the track to play with our toys while millions of people are losing jobs around the world, then you should not skimp on your equipment. If you do then you are a miserly bum, which I am sometimes depending on how far away my pay day is.

No hard feelings mate,

Answer:

When the worm kit is inserted into the hole, do note that around 3/4 of the worm is inserted inside & the rest protruding outside to cover up the hole.

When the bike moves, the air inside the tire will heat up thus causing the 3/4 extra to be mold into a lump which in turns blocks off the hole(It will cover an area bigger than the hole size) from the inside completely. Not for big hole lobang..

I see...

Well, the reason why I asked is because a gawddamn nail went into my then- two week old track tyre and I went one dangerous round around the track with it before I found out. After the bikeshop applied the worm kit, it popped shortly and air hissed out.

Yeah, it's simply one of these days these things have to happen.

It is a must for me to change the whole tire if i wanna go track? Btw, the tire is 1/2 yr old and nv been to track, compound and thread still good condition, sportec M1 rear tire.

IMO, I think it's due time you'd change out of your M1's...

Your skills have outgrown those touring sets since you're already going faster already on the track :D

i also think is time to change mine.. review of gpr100 and @10 not bad right? Usually 1 pair can last how many slow track sessions for a 2A bike for that tire? Unsuitable for track but should be more than enough for normal road use right?
