Just changed EO at 3kkm due to yesterday's incident. No such issue now. Dunno the cause already.

Posted
How long since the last change?

2L of EO may not be good enough to manage heat in SG?

Or like me... suspecting it was the choice of EO that could not do the job properly?

Otherwise, must be the design of the magneto itself. Too sensitive towards minor fault?

Well, should explore whether possible to do coil re-wrap or not. Economical?

anyone knows if forza 250 has the same magneto design & problem?

Re-coil, nowadays seldom hear this word. still can find one?

The billion dollar oil companies know the oil needs to be alkaline that's why all EO are alkaline but.... the challenge is how long can they stay alkaline in the engine crankcase...? We can't fault them for EO turning acidic too early. Engine fuel air mapping contributes to the by product.

If anyone interested to conduct test, the results from the test can only tell you which EO is suitable for your machine. O ya meaning it should be done on used oil.

no matter how good the EO, if EO temp is high, EO will likely degrade faster also. does using NGK#9/ denso IUH27 helps?

btw whats e normal coolant temp for FJS? SWT display is non digital :(

AN650L3 (current): All mod transferred.

SW-T400 (till oct 13): voltmeter, safety features disabled. coocase v36+remote. Adjustable, folding Brake levers. Givi AF318 windshield. on-off switch(pilot light, head light, hazard light), electrical seat unlatch,Dr pulley.

AN400K6 (apr07-dec11): side deflectors, J Costa variator, Dr pulley slider + HiT clutch.

YP250, RVF400/RS250, NSF125.

actually many other bikes also have coil and rectifier issues. But many have also gone through w/o such issues for the same bike. Probably how bike is ridden and maintained have some effect.

Re-coil common elsewhere but not in sg where it's use and throw as parts are easily available and we do not have car-bike manufacturing industries to produce pools of technical skills.

FJS also analogue. Maybe you can mod and fit a digital one?

Most of the motorcycles parts will go through wear and tear. We cannot expect all parts to operate forever.

I think most Swing owners are concern if the current coil issues is a pre-mature failures bah.

Pre-mature...

yup yup.

My Vulcan500 12 years never changed coil.

X9Evo 3years no problem.

SW seems like 1 to 1.5 year leh.

But of course my SW travel farther and faster than the others.

After EO change, now voltmeter reading increase by 0.1v to 14.5v while moving. Any explanation? Still the same EO. Previously didn't have voltmeter so not able to tell.

Of all my bikes ... only honda magna 750 have coil issue. The rest all ok.

Unless they are of different technology, else I would think the current quality and qc are getting more lousy.

If every 1.5 year change a rectifier + coil ( appx $550 ), guess that cost can justify for a better quality bike instead.

Only the coil got problem.

Rectifier seldom.

Wonder anywhere else can get the coil at a better price? Online?

JB got people do such re-coiling service?

On record, some coils spoilt at 6 months and some lasts more than 2 years.

Too many factors affecting this inconsistencies: Long distance travel for too long, EO, traveling speed...?

If cost is lowered, I don't mind factor it in as yearly maintenance cost per cycle, i.e. with belt, rollers, etc. Until another nice Scoot is found.... where I can slide my butt in and not climb over.

Yes, currently is around 6 months to 2 years. But paying $300+ for coil is no cheap matter. Unless it is $80 or $120 ....

$300+ (coil) + $230 (3 in 1) + plugs/air filter = around $600 per cycle (24k) for maintenance cost versus the comfort...

Depends on pocket and tolerance of each rider bah.

so how ????

uncle might be ur voltmeter issue, if the voltmeter isnt 100% water proof ones when water slipped in it will began to give false reading.

perhaps you can try to cross check with an actual multimeter?

Any tell-tale signs before breakdown? If on long trip, service before go. To change coil is not difficult, just need to bring a spare along and the rest of materials and tools are easily available. At most, a spare battery + home charger should be able to see you home. Also, tour brothers are around.

No need to be bogged down too much by such concerns. I'm very happy with the high reliability and low maintenance of my SW for the past 2+ years of ownership. In fact, if I were to go on a bike tour, SW will be my choice as all the hands-on and discoveries have given me much confidence on the bike :)

Actually, I only curious. The diff is very marginal and still way within spec of the system :)

Online will save about $50.

Coil spoil got very short notice.

When your voltmeter shows a drop in voltage during moving, i.e. 13v or 12v (from the normal 14v) then you must worry.

Again, it could also be the Rectifier that failed to do the job properly.

Hmm... I need to learn how to check the electrical.

Now, where is that tech page?

http://www.powersportsplus.com/parts/search/Honda/Motorcycle/2010/FSC600D+AC/ALTERNATOR/parts.html

(US$163 + US$18 shipping) x 1.3 exchange + S$30 shipping to SG = S$265 approx. Or order something more to US$250 for free US shipping. Need to be mindful to try not to exceed S$400. Might be cheaper elsewhere.

It's a shame it's cheaper to get a part that went from JP to US and back to SG, then to get something that the shop gets bulk shipped from JP to SG.

I copycat-ed this when I had the SWiNg. It is so comfortable when riding long distance.

lol, shall try it when i get a silverwing at the end of the year.

Was wondering could the common coil failure due to excessive internal engine heat pressure build up?

As originally Silverwing itself came without the side engine gasket hence it technically should allows the engine to relieve more internal hot pressure.

However due to the slow leaking of the engine oil issue, hence we decided to seal the case up with silicon.

After sealing up the case with silicon, will it actually causes less ventilation for the engine? other than thru the breather itself.
