Guys those using aftermarket carbs... any set up recommendations for an aftermarket air filter that can fit replacing the stock airbox?

And the aluminium funnel for air intake how does it work? velocity stack? Hope the pros can share ur 2cents... thanks.

That aluminium funnel or "velocity stack" u see attached to a carburetor is to create a venturi effect. Mostly all carburetors have that bell shaped thingy at the end and the "velocity stack" i just to extend it. The Venturi effect is a case where the air flows through a tube that narrows. The velocity of the fluid increases as it flows through the narrower tube while the pressure decreases, due to conservation of energy. The effect is an example of Bernoulli's principle.

What is bernoulli's principle? It is Bernoulli's principle is a concept of fluid dynamics. It says that when an incompressible fluid moves through different sizes of tube, the fluid's speed changes. This change in velocity is called "acceleration". Newton showed that acceleration only occurs through the action of a force. When a force acts over an area, it is called "pressure". So any change in a fluid's speed must be matched by a change in pressure (force). Bernoulli saw that the speed of the flow went up in the smaller part of the tube while the pressure on the side of the tube went down.

Basically the Bernoulli principle says that as speed of the fluid increases, pressure decreases. The air in the big part of the tube has a higher static pressure than the thin part.

So what it does it kind of "compacts" the air because in this case, the air drawn from carbs is not force induced, meaning it is not force fed in. Instead, the carb draws air from the atmosphere and what the venturi effect does is to squeeze that air into the carb. It's kinda like supercharging, but the length and diameter/size of the venturi will affect your performance, whether low, mid or high range. What size affects where? Don't ask me. I'm not the r&d department.

It's the opposite of what an airbox does. What an airbox does is to keep a steady supply of air and to keep air velocity into the carbs down. This means from 0% throttle, the carbs will get air because there is a steady supply of air from the airbox. Think of it as a reservoir for air. Of course for higher end power, the airbox becomes too restrictive most of the time.

So the moral of the story here is to get rid of the idea of "take out airbox for more pickup" because it is seriously not true. Why that happens is when you take the airbox out, your low end power decreases, so you throttle more, thus your "pickup power" increases.

End of the day, it still boils down to your wrist control and proper jetting to maximise fuel efficiency. Sorry for the bad english. I'm damn tired :D

Hey guys. I wanna ask, whenever my bike reaches 100km/h, it makes this ringing sound. Only when it exceeds 100. Anyone knows why? Help much appreciated. :)

The Bernoulli and Newton. Like straight from textbook.

Your bike is equipped with that restrictor thingy usually instaled on vans. When it exceeds a certain speed it will ring! Edited by duo

On a serious note. Its already "installed" on your bike. You cannot exceed a certain limit. Try it.
