No doubt you need software, you also need RCA cables, as well as receiving-end equipment on your computer to digitize the analog [VCR] video.

It goes something like this:

[VCR] ------rca cable------ [Video card equipped PC with video editing software]

Here's the definitions:

  • Video (and TV) card: You need to equip your computer with this. It comes in many form factors: installed internally as a PCI card or as an external unit connected to the computer via USB. Why you need this is because it takes in an analog video signal (aka your VCR video) and digitizes it into a file on your computer.
  • RCA Cable: You need this to provide connectivity from your VCR to your video card -- that is already connected to the PC in turn. [example]
  • Video editing & effects software: Windows Movie Maker, iMovie (for Macs), Ulead Video Studio (payware). Dummy-compatible, easy to use; never gets you wrong

Mine is the same; USB can only read the memory card's contents aka just the pictures only.

I'm using JVC and it offers me 2 choices: To record small sized videos and take pictures (that can be transfered to the comp via USB), or go for the full-sized analog video recording on DV tape. For the latter, need to purchase the video card/video hardware to do digitization.

Moral of the story: Get firewire equipped camcorders. Plug-n-play directly to the computer, free and easy. Nothing in between.
