Rear Brake Pads Removal for checking, cleaning or replacement.

Tools needed

1. Allen key Size 8? (preferably with a ball at the end so can turn even at 30 degree angle after loosening)

2. General purpose grease

3. Rubber Grease ( for rubber boot area, so as not to deform/damage the rubber)

4. Sand paper about ~600 grit roughness. the lesser the number the rougher the sand paper.

5. Old cloth/rags/newspaper for wiping hands and stuff.

6. Hand soap and water for washing hands.

7. Gloves but not necessary. Maybe the surgical ones.

Loosen turn anti clock wise. It's tight need a lot of force.

The allen key looks like size 8 as indicated on pics

See those rusty spots ,remember to grease them - lightly grease

Sand the pads on a flat surface, remove just enough for a flat and clean surface.

Both after sanding.

Apply light general grease to all the metal contact corners of the brake pads.

When installing the pads, tilt at a 45degree like this and push in the pads.

This way easier.

This is the original position when i removed the caliper. The way the piston protrude so much,

indicating that either a thicker pads can be use or the pads are really wearing very fast. I'm only at 3000km. I know my style of braking but this is just too fast. i'm monitoring.

14http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v319/jeryll/b75f7018.jpg

Push back the piston using your thumb. Make sure the other piston don't come out.

It is possible to push 2 piston at the same time. Need strong thumbs ha ha.

16http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v319/jeryll/b179c97d.jpg

Apply rubber grease to the caliper pin. Put a bit more at the tip.

If not the grease will be scrape off by the rubber boot.

17http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v319/jeryll/c2f3af62.jpg

Reverse procedure to put back. Done.

Remember to tighten tight but not super tight.

Put a marking, so you can visually check without touching the caliper. If it really come loose you can tell.

Not that it will become loose, just a precaution.

And finally, remember to give the brake lever some squeezing/pumping until the lever is firm.

Just a rough guide, post question if are unsure of certain steps.

I posted my sales thread in the garage section satisfying all 3P requirement. I dont see where i have not done correctly. Ia link to the sales in this thread lead to the deletion. But i dont see the justification to delete my other thread. Besides thewre are so many sales thread not meeting the requirement. I dont see them getting deleted?

Oh. As for the MyRoad, I remembered talking to another MyRoad rider when I met him at MS.

He's using the CooCase 52L. His friend has a remote control one. Battery flat very fast. Haha.

Then cannot access the box. Gotta bring it down to some service centre, then they manage to open the box.

So forget about the remote control one lah. Haha!!

But even the 52L box looks kinda small on the MyRoad. Maybe a 56L one will look more purposeful???

56litres! Lol. With that kinda storage. I can take on mae hong son n northern thailand anytime. When you want to buy panniers, be sure to do research on securing it on the bike. Most brand expect you to tie a series of cable around the fairing n underneath the seats. Very troublesome

@parotae,

Wow Thanks a lot for the tutorial does look quite easy, breaks is an area that I am worried to touch but now it seems that it is doable.

What kind/brand of grease do you use?

Thanks juanpauk, it's really easy and I took my time. Roughly 1 hour.

General/multi purpose grease will do for metal rubbing parts. For the caliper pin, it's better to use rubber grease. Usually in red. Rubber grease will not attack the rubber boot/sleeve.

Yep. Seen it. Scooter is already very heavy in the rear. In my opinion, i will not want to add additional weight to it. These panniers are not flushed with the bike fairing. When you travel fast on north south highway, the mini wind turbulence form in between boxes and side fairing makes the bike extremely unstable. The top box doesnt make things easier too. Not forgetting you will have issue with pickup and acceleration. Your rear tire will wear out even faster. Pretty heavy on the wallet for just 2 x small boxes.

Yeap Yeap.

Went up this Malaysia MACS office at the malaysia checkpoint.

was first in the queue, so 5 mins was all it took. Haha.

Just pay Rm30, and they'll scan your passport photo for the visa.

It's valid for 1 yr only by the way. Needs subsequent renewal.

Did you ride into check point? My friend says no place to park or cannot park? Must take bus?

@Doremi

Did you ride inside to do the MACS?

@juanpauk

Forgot the most important step after you have finish your brake service.

Remember to pump you left lever for the rear brakes as to allow the piston to expand and clamp the brake pads to the rotor. Otherwise when you ride and apply the rear brake, there will be no brakes as the piston are not fully expanded. So pump the lever until it is firm.

I rode in and did at second link custom. After you stamped your passport, just few metres on your left is the entrance to level 2 macs office. If you are joining the desaru ride this sunday, we will come back to Sg using 2nd link.

Btw are you going to frequent malaysia more? If you are not, there isnt a need to do the macs actually.
