33 front 33 back if alone. 33 and 36 with pillion.

What causes our headlights to degenerate?

 

Headlight lenses are made of plastic. Vehicle exhaust, ozone, acid rain, sun rays, chemicals and road debris all hit the headlight which will cause pitting and an actual chemical alteration of the plastic lens. The foggy and cloudy appearance of the clear substrate is equivalent to the rusting of steel.

 

In Singapore, degeneration is due to "Sun Damage". Long-term exposure to sun can permanently cloud and fog up your vehicle's headlights. The sun's ultraviolet rays penetrate deep into the plastic of a car's headlights. Over time, the plastic starts to warp and lose its luster and clarity. A hazy, foggy film then develops and obstructs a large portion of the lighting capabilities of your vehicle's headlights.

 

Types of degenerations

 

Crazing

This is the development of cracks deep into the lens which are irreparable, resulting from certain hardcoats used by manufactures or through hydrolysis. The headlights are still usable after resurfacing as long the cracks doesn't bother you.

Peeling

This is when the hardcoat begins to deteriorate and you will notice spotting in certain areas such as the upper region or the corners. The hardcoat can appear to flake off or peeling off. The headlight should be yellowing by now.

Yellowing

This occurs when all of the hard coat is beginning to thin out and lose adhesion to the polycarbonate lens. The UV wavelength spectrum creates a new repeating unit in the carbonic chain which absorbs blue light, and results in a yellowish appearance.

Hazing

This is when all of the hardcoat has worn off and the soft polycarbonate is exposed, beginning to absorb scratches that creates hazing. The lens will soon be covered in a rough dark yellow crusted surface.

Q: How do you know if the headlights or other plastic parts can be re-stored?

A: First cut, if item is crack through I will advise you not to waste your money. Maybe buy a drink for your journey to my place.

Second, if the thickness of the material is thin, and the damage has surpass 50% or more of the original material thickness.

I will advise you and will not start work, unless you insist.

 

Q: Can coloured plastics be re-work?

A: Yes! If only these plastics are NOT tinted (eg. Iridium Visors)
