Floods hit Malacca, 1,500 evacuated

MALACCA — More than 1,500 people have been evacuated to temporary relief shelters in Malacca after continuous rain which started on Sunday night caused flooding in several areas.

Among the worst-hit were Taman Bukit Rambai Utama in Tanjung Minyak and Taman Awan Biru in Alor Gajah, which saw more than 350 families seeking shelter when floodwaters rose almost a metre high, reported The Star.

.

Heavy showers and intermittent rain dumped about 90.5cm of rain in a span of five hours, causing rivers to breach their banks at about 4.30am yesterday.

.

Tangga Batu MP Idris Harun, who is also Deputy Higher Education Minister, visited several areas hit by floods. He told those affected to heed evacuation orders issued by the authorities. He also expressed satisfaction at the response of rescue teams from several government agencies.

More than 400 personnel from the fire and rescue service department here have been put on alert since last week following warnings of possible floods.

DDPM: Recent updates on flood situation in southern Thailand

 

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has provided recent update on flood situation in the southern parts of Thailand.

 

Today, the Department Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has given update on flood situation in the southern parts, revealing that thus far 212,014 dwellings and 765,140 residents within 9 provinces have already been affected by flood as 28 lives were claimed.

 

However, the overall situation has evidently been improved in 4 provinces including Chumphon, Surat Thani, Trang and Nakorn Si Thammarat, while 5 other provinces namely Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat are still enduring with inundation which has affected 166,677 residents of 43,131 dwellings in 20 districts.

 

The department has also been cooperating with other related agencies to provide assistance to affected locals.

was a successful trip yesterday despite the long wating at the start of the trip... plz be puncture guys next time... abit wasted to wait for so long... if not we can reach there earlier and have more time walking the shopping centres...
