jingwen,

READ the bike owner manual for what item to service and service interval. Spark plug can usually last 10,000 - 20,000km. I've tried using the spark plug for 50,000km without problem on my current bike.

Basic things to look out for in the service manual in terms of when these items need to be change:-

* Engine Oil Change (Mineral Oil / Synthetic Oil) and Engine Oil Filter Change

* Brake Pad

* Tires

* Spark Plug

* Chain & Chain Sproket

* Air Filter

* Coolant Flush & Replacement (if your bike has a radiator)

One important thing to check is your chain lubrication. You can either use oil or chain lub. If you an easier way out, then look for gadget to do chain lubrication.

If you want to know details of bike servicing for Sparks, you can download the service manual, which was posted by a fellow biker in this forum. This manual is use by mechanics for troubleshooting.

Have fun riding. :cheers:

depends on individual, for me is 500, 1500, 3000 then subsequently 2000-3000km for semi-syn, 4000-6000km fully syn.

oil filter every 2-3 EO oil change.

Spark plug can usually last 10,000 - 20,000km.

at last, someone agrees wif me

yupz sparkplug can usually last abt 5 to 6 oil changes..

for me, I'll tell my mech to take out sparkplug to check..

the last time i changed my plug was due to a bike wash that flooded my sparkplug..

good thing DRZ got a drain hole..

plugs are not exactly expersive nor cheap.. anyway, TS's bike ony uses 1 sparkplug..

for EO, you may wanna try different brands and see how they feel and lasts before deciding on one you intend to use for long term..

there's no harm in changing to different brands of EO..

you will do harm if you dun change EO in regular intervals..

Do u have friends who is currently riding who can give u some advice? Or get in touch with someone from Sparks thread to share with you more about bike over a coffee session? Looking at the questions you are asking, I guess it's good someone give you some pointers on bike.

for me, i just got my first brand new bike -X1-r.. this is what i did and will do..

- changed 1st EO (i use OWS) at 500km..

- changed 2nd EO at 1000km together with plugs (alternate EO change, use NGK) and oil filter..

- changed 3rd EO at 2000km..

- next EO will be at 3500km with plugs and oil filter..

- 0km to 1000km, i ride below 80km/h..

- 1000km - 2000km, i ride below 120km/h...

- EO i will change at every 1500km..

- no dragging of gear from Gear 1 to Gear 3.. only will blast at Gear 4..

- chain lubed (original chain) once every 2weeks regardless of distance travelled..

- intending to change the chain at 3000km..

- tyres pumped every week (front 250, rear 300)

maintenance for small bikes very cheap, better to spend that little bit extra as compared to overhaulling the engine when it breaks down..

brothers and sisters out there.. do correct me if whatever i'm doing is wrong..

erm.. spark plug cheap, only ard $8 - $10.. so no point saving on it, what if u intending to go far then halfway it spoils den u stuck along the way.. lubing of chains, i do it with 2T left over from my past ride (SP)..

actually, no point dragging la.. just enjoy the ride.. the more u drag, the more toll it takes on the engine, esp at lower gears.. i heard that its ok so long as u change ur EO regularly.. but no point taking the risk la.. i will only open the throttle more at the last gear.. some more Spark not like some big bike with is built for racing or more torque.. so i just ride normally lor.. at Gear 4, ride at about 80kmh ok le mah..

wah.... got money also don't lidat throw. Go donate better :angel:

i agree with some post earlier: change every 10,000km or >. They are SUPPOSE to last till such mileage. Unless other problems is present.

Is like buying a pack of tissue and use only 1 piece throwing away the rest.

There isn't a need to waste resources in such a manner although cheap.

All my plugs last over 20,000km and still working when i changed them, except for 1 plug dropped on the floor and damaged when i tried to took it out for regular inspection.

Prices of Maxima Chain Lube should be quite standard anywhere. i only know Planet motors(UBI) and Mustafa(Deskar Rd) selling them in the east.

They are considered the better lubes in market, so they don't come cheap. A small can (8oz?) will set u back for min $12.50, Big can $20+++?. for a comparison, a cheap putoline small bottle cost $5.00.

On my first bike, I was also worried about dragging my bike. After riding a brand new bike for 3 months on low rpm, the bike feels sluggish and lost of power. When I send my bike to the workshop, the mechanic just wack the bike on main stand. Lots of carbon spew from the exhaust. After that, he told me the bike is "repaired". The mechanic was laughing while telling me not to ride like Ah Peh. The bike needs to "clear carbon" once a while.

Engine accumulates more carbon when running on low rpm. If u are running on low rpm, once a while you need to clear the carbon out from the engine by revving hard (not into the red zone of the tachometer thou). That's why designers coloured the "no-no" zone as red. Any rpm below red zone is perfectly acceptable as normal operating range.

Some ppl might preach the thought of damaging the bike with high rpm. But in reality, most of my biker friends have experience better engine performance and better fuel efficiency when riding hard because of the effect of getting rid of the carbon build up in the engine. And I have experienced it too.

That's why some petrol companies come out with fuel with cleaning properties to get rid of the build up carbon. To me, riding hard once a while just does the trick instead of spend extra money on more expensive fuel.
