that would depend on what ff you are wearing also.. some still have very loud noise wind.. which in long term might harm our ear drums if worn for prolong periods of time..

really??? what about those uncles who ride s4 and wearing half-face / HD riders who wear egg shell helmet..

slow speed in singapore wont really harm our drums bah....

for my ff helmet, open air ven then got some sound.. close all air holes then quiet liao...

if want to listen music, do try to use in-ears. or IEMS.

it helps alot. and protect your ears as well from blasting music.

I think earplug the only way ba.... everytime i go malaysia roads i reach my destination half deaf.....

Ditto.

At the end of a 3 to 6hr run at speeds above 150, I'm halfway deaf. In the long run it's gonna bust my ears completely.

It's just like my younger days when I was in the jamming studios. After an hour of the drummer bashing his drumsets away next to me, I walked out with my ears ringing...

Earplugs are the way to go. Not noise isolation, but at least to cut away the high-frequency noise.

One way is to have a bike with really high wind shield--high enough for the jet stream to hit the top of your helmet or totally flow over it. It will be absolutely quiet behind such type of wind shield. Eerily quiet. Like sitting inside a car.:cheeky:

I know because I had a STX before.

If you have some wind hitting your helmet, then I'm afraid there is no way to absolutely cut down wind noise.

Why?

Because one of the sources of the noise is none other than your skull. The wind hits your helmet. Your helmet vibrates causing your skull to vibrate. From Bike magazine. Don't believe? Next time when you ride, try putting one hand and hold onto the top of your helmet. Suddenly it will become quieter :cheeky:

That's why you can put all the ear plugs you want, you will still hear lots of noise. It's from your skull

Wow, the wind shield must be aerodynamic in design. No wonder TP can hear their radio call when travel at high speed cos they install the high wind shield.

unfortunately, high wind shields only work on some bikes...won't work on a scrambler...nor a sports bike...can imagine how that would look :-)

seriously though, if your bike doesn't have a wind shield (even a low one that is angled properly at an appropriate height), i would recommend to get one to reduce buffeting from the wind...even just for the chest area.

i second the idea of a good fitting full face helmet with good padding. i didn't realize my mhr half face helmet which i used for my class 2b training was so loud until i used my shoei hornet for the first time...it seems earily quiet even though it really isn't a "quiet" helmet by many people's standard.

i'll still be getting an ear-plug though. now just gotta figure out which ones to get!

For FF, most of the wind noise actually in from the bottom of the helmet. Yes the big hole where you pop your head in. After you have worn the helmet, there is 2 big gap present, below your chin and one behind your neck. Most of the noise actually came in from behind your neck. You can do an experiment, when you ride try using your left hand to cover the gap behind your neck and you can immediately hear the difference. Some of the helmet cater purposely the rear neck cushion slightly thicker to cover this gap. Shoei multitec has it, and the noise is significantly reduce compare the my other Arai. Other wise you have to self make something to cover it. However the simplest and cheapest way is to just use those foam earplug or listen to MP3. The most expensive way is to change to a bike with a damn big windshield.

Erm. Multitec owner here.

Not much diff from my Arai Rapide OR. Less noisy perhaps, but only by a little. And the worse thing about some helmets is the little de-mister tab on the left lip of the visor.

The little tab there will catch the wind at some angles and cause a buzzing or whistling noise.

I still vote for 3M foam earplugs.

its not as hot as most people make it out to be lah...i wan't any warmer when wearing my full gear out riding on our hot afternoons (although i haven't had many hot afternoons given i only just started riding on Monday)...

about that gap behind the neck...my theory is that when there is no place for air to escape from your helmet, there is no way air will get into your helmet...therefore less noise :-) for what its worth, i close all my vents when riding...only open the one on the chin bar sometimes...and its only because i got bored. haha!

U R RIGHT! I used my palm to touch my neck where the helmet "ends", viola! about 70% of sound disappeared!!! Im gonna do something abt it.

anyw, i changed my cheek pads as well, as some bros advised - now it's more fitting and the noise did come down slightly, but kinwei's point is very valid!

I will still prefer to do something abt the "back of the neck region" rather than wear ear plug, as of now. :cheeky: maybe if after minimising the neck region noise still noisy then i'll settle for plugs. :cheeky:

Is there anything we can buy to wear to settle the "behind the neck region" noise?

yup.. the gap from the chinbar to my chin. i used my hand to 'cover' that area.. can hear the difference..
