Full-Face / Flip-up Helmet & Riding Jacket Compulsory for New P-Plate Riders

(& maybe even Dispatch riders).

With the amount of accidents and ignorance rates sky rocketing, this point jus popped into my mind.

If there was a legal regulation for all new riders to wear a fullface/flip up helmet and riding jacket for the first year of riding, do u think it will eventually change the motorcycling culture in SG ?

This is assuming on the hope that after one year of riding with the above gear on, most riders should be accustomed to the heat/inconvenience/wateva of putting on the gear. and since they are used to it, they would jus carry on this safe riding habit.

those who think that this rule is outrageous and thus change their minds about taking up riding - well excellent - we dun need more potential deathes on the roads anyway.:cheeky:

I mean..yea its sounds radical...but hey this wouldnt be the first time that SG is implementing something so "extreme"..(think ERP)...

Think abt it... we start with the new riders..they are geared up for riding..when they upgrade to 2A/2, they still continue to gear up properly while riding cos they are used to it...the next batch of new riders will also be geared up cos of the rule. givit a few years... majority of teh riding population will be geared up! :) tats the theoretical ideal of course. there will be the minority. but isint it an ideal worth aiming for ?

anyway...jus wanna hear ur views...

SHOOT!

PS: this thread was inspired from the follwing sale of 2 FF helmets.. read this thread...haha

cannot like that la. if this is made into a law it will be so stifling. Cannot even choose according to weather/ purpose?

despatch rider ald dun earn much. force them to buy all that, they jit tao die let u see ah.:lol:

start with TP and parking attendant lor. Uniform easier to enforce.

or can make it a rule to wear while learning (Driving centres enforce ba since they ald supply helmets and safety gear anyway) so that once pass most likely carry on habit. And if learners wanna use their own, well they'll be forced to buy their own safety gear. Reason being safety gear needs getting used to as well.

Now they have dryers @ BBDC to keep things dry and less disgusting!

wear safety gear not equal to less reckless. so it will not solve the no of casualties anyway. If the qiongsters insist on qionging 250kph nothing can save them...

For the record, i do wear safety gear.

I think ur comments are great... :thumb:

for dispatch... I think the dispatch companies shd provide the basic gear for the riders! helmets, jackets, pants and boots! Paying them $4.50 an hour to risk their lives on the roads is absolutely disgusting!

and yes...I think tat all authorised personnel should be geared up. TP, Cisco and all the other similar bikers. I find it absolutely hilarious to see the Cisco goons (aka Aux Police Officers..Wah..) wearing the $350++ TCX Infinity Gortex boots with their open face helmets riding around like they own the roads.. their feet must be really worth a lot of $$$... :faint::cheeky:

Starting with the driving centres is also a great start...

but really...is my idea really too extreme? wats the price to pay for safety ?

yes, Proper gear may not curb recklessness ( I tend to ride fast and overtake alot too...cos i jus hate being behind road hogging drivers)...but the gear will definitely minimise injury and casualties right?

anyway, great input. Bring it on guys...:thumb:

All this protective clothing can only do so much. In fact in Singapore hot n humid weather the gloves n long jeans or clothes might result in more rider speeding to their destination. Just make matter even worst.

If u ask me,wats most important is the rider attitude.

If u choose to commit sucide who can stop u ?

Many times i see riders cutting thru cars at high speeding, failure to on their headlight or brakelight even at night.Speeding pass zebra crossing n school zone....

I think wats most important is education..

It will minimise injury ONLY if compared to the same speed, same attitude.

open face @ 90kph guai guai vs fullface @ 140kph guai l@n - veli big difference. u get my point..

thnk the despatch riders will end up abusing the safety gears anyway, so the companies lugee ma.

and yes, that pair of boots can be traded in for other boots + ff ba, for the uniform riders..

Yup. sg weather really sometimes can be hard to tolerate. hence confirm cannot make it a law ba.

maybe something like "If u wear safety gear and unfortunately commit traffic offence (coz need getting used to), can get 20% point discount for 1st time!" reward instead of punish ma.

better than "If u dun wear safety gear i FINE u!"

fwa, i think all go and invest in the gears.

hmmm u Cisco is it??o_O

first, I didnt call u an idiot... so I would appreciate it if u gave me the mutual respect. :dot::angry:

second, yes i am biased against Cisco and Aetos and any other Aux police in SG. They are not TP. and most of them dun understand the word Aux!:dot:

they ride around with their chest 6 inches infront of their open face helmet as if they are the main regulating authority on the road. Its a job. know ur place and ur position. have you seen the way these hooligans (yes! im calling them hooligans!) ride their varas around the SGH compound ?

pls..dun talk to me abt them.

PS: if u belong to that group, I hope ur not one of those i mentioned. Im generalising here.

Why should i give you the mutual respect when you are baised against cisco, ateos or any other aux police, its obvious you don't like cisco who is attached to SGH.Think about it,last time all traffic related duties where done by TP or LTA,why are they now giving the duties to aux police, and once these duties are outsource to aux police they are empowered to carry it out just like TP or LTA,issuing out summons, reporting related offences etc.Try to challenge them i dare you and you'll see what will happen. You can always threaten to complain against them but once you commit an offence,it's an offence,no two ways about that. And just for the record i'm not in any uniform group but i know alot about them and their duties and they are all around SG and not only in SGH,you haven't met the correct one yet.

its quite sad tat this thread has produced nothin positively constructive. oh well, maybe i came on too harsh...or im jus an idealist.

either way its jus ended up spot to mock ppl for gearing up. I hope i dun see any of those ATGATT critics lying on the road someday...cos i'd prob jus ride on by.

Good luck to THEM. Kudos to the rest.

Nineh, there was a thread like this here before. Also with the same results but with more posts. I believe most the ATGATT supporters have given up using SBF to try and teach others so they don't have to learn the hard way. Reason being u get all those jokers who think it's funny wearing safety gear. To me it's just the same as a car driver wearing a seat belt, rider has to wear FF helmet, armored jackets etc.

My advice, concentrate your efforts on people you know first-hand, ie your loved ones, friends etc. Don't bother about those who don't care about their own body, after all it's them who might have to learn the hard way. So, enourage your family/friends will do. :thumb:

Hahaz, a change will be nice. some times rewards really work better than punishment! :p:lol:

yes, i think wearing safety gear is an attitude in itself, but there are also ppl who think ride fast is safety - they bang ppl also better than ppl bang them. i noe of riders like that - den how?

This is better compared to the fugface's "no-fault" insurance thingie.

spot on! :lol::lol:

vespa/rxK with full face......

 ok wat. anyway u wear ff no one can recognise u ma. :p

maybe next time there will be matching ff for vespa/ rxk?

ts, if u want to feel a lot more motivated, join the HOV gang! you will feel veli motivated by the safety gears!

the first time i went, i was the only one w/o safety gear!  now im so accustomed to wearing mesh jacket and f/u that i feel uneasy whenever i change to open face/ w/o jacket.

I am surprised when fellow riders got this idea that those riding low powered bikes and dress up appropriately for the ride looks funny or what.

Ride bikes with low power means you are no entitled to protection? What kind of rubbish is this?

If this is the kind of attitude some of you have, keep to yourself.

Those half caps and goggles will protect you for sh*t. Looks cool? Thats subjective.

Just dont cry like a baby when your face got plastered into the streets at 90km/hr.

Guess those who are saved by a FF and appropriate dressing will get what some of us meant.

Anyway, its up to everyone to decide what they want to wear.

You cannot force it on anyone. Its freedom.

But as to riding RXK/VESPA and wearing FF, that's makes more sense than riding the same bikes with sh*t helmets.

end of the day its all about protection. my gf was against the idea of wearing full face cos she thinks its too hot for our climate.

so one day i went to purchase a flip-up for her when i was out alone. i know for a fact that her head size is 1 smaller than mine regardless of whatever brand.

the next day i presented it to her and told her "ur lips are for me to kiss. not for the roads."

I do think it's similar.... but the problem is, you park your car, you can leave the seatbelt inside w/ no concerns. Can you say the same for a FF/Jacket though? They will cost somewhere upwards of $150 each... and if it's less, aren't you going to wonder how safe it is? Yet you either have to:

1) carry it around with you in a largish bag

2) wear it and over heat while looking a tad bit foolish in some settings) or 3) buy a box, and keep it there and hope none of the buggers running around will break in and nick them.

All of which are unappealing, say, for a night out (no alcohol!), no?

I agree w. ATGATT (after seeing the pictures & stories, it's hard not to) but can you mandate it? I don't know. Maybe you could, but you'd have to institute other policies at the same time. Somewhere to stash the gear would be nice. Lockers at all M/C parking points? Could work, but then you'd have to figure a way to secure them, including against pranksters. Is there another way?

A bit harsh no? :(

would like to knw the n43 air .. is it good enough?

There's also the Schuberth J1... it says it meets ECE standardsno clue if it's full-face helmet standards or open-face helmets, so I'd guess the latter. Still, probably more protective than a regular open-face helmet. :)
