Hi all,

I have this problem with neutral gear. When I insert my key and turn on the bike without switching on the engine yet, I have no problem switching to neutral gear, gear shifting seem smooth. But when I turn on the engine, there is no way in getting into neutral. Gear shifting to gear 2 seems to be fine, but it simply won't go to neutral. Mine is a Suzuki rv125.

I have searched the forum, but can't seem to find this problem with regards to when it occurs only when the engine is on.

Any help or advice is very much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

It is engine oil or its the rider problem.

hi guys, i'm wondering how does clutch plate problems contribute to difficulty of changing gears?

to my understanding... the clutch doesnt disengage the drive shaft fully from the gear box... so its hard to get the neutral which is in between.. coz the gears just jump from 1 to 2 at the slightest touch... hope dat explains my hopeless understanding... lol.. correct me if i'm wrong guys...

if the clutch plates are worn, then the clutch won't engage properly rite?

so how does worn plates contribute to improper disengagement of the clutch from the gearbox?

Unless if clutch plates are badly damage you will find it very to change grears and hard to find Neutral, and also at this stage of damage then ever you kick to gear 1 from neutral your will engine stalls.

currently my plates are abit worn out.. but i don't have problems finding Neutral.

what normally cause hard to find Neutral should be too much engine oil.

Hi Bros,

Thanks for your replies. I took your advices and changed the engine oil. The funny thing is it is only hard to get neutral when the engine is on. When engine is off, it shifts very smoothly. I will wait a few days to see if it improves which I hope it will. Otherwise, I will ask the mechanic to check the clutch plate during my next servicing. In the meantime, at traffic lights etc no choice, just clutch in, don't shift to neutral, not a big issue.

Thanks again, will update the thread if it works.

your biting point is indeed too near.. try putting it at the furthest you can and see whether it improves.

hey redred

i too ride a van van and yes i do encounter the same problem as well trying to engage to neutral. though i'm uncertain if i've got a clutch problem like what most of these guys suggested.

here's what i've been doing to engage in neutral; move the bike forward while engaging to neutral, that usually gets the job done, but not all the time.

btw...does your van van happen to be green and have you parked at ps recently?

its the same for both of my bikes. i'm convinced now it isn't really a clutch issue, nor a gearbox issue. if it was a clutch or gearbox issue, you'd have the same difficulty whether the bike was idling, or engine off, moving, or stopped. but since it is easy when stopped and engine not yet on, it suggests that the clutch and gearbox are working still. for mine, it is pretty easy to get to neutral when the engine is off, or when the bike is still moving very slowly. if the bike is stopped and it is in gear 1, then getting to neutral is a little tough. normally i just move the bike forward a little with the clutch on, release a little and try again. the gear teeth will move to a point where it will slip nicely into neutral. after awhile you will know what is the best way for your bike. took me a long ride to figure out mine with lots of traffic light stops :)

Hi all,

Sad to say it isn't a biting point or adjustment of clutch cable issue, which if it is, would be easy to solve. Have even tried adjusting clutch cable to tightest(biting point reached only releasing up to 90% of clutch lever), but to no avail.

I find what scubasimon said could make some sense. But can anyone else verify if the clutch plates does affect the engagement of gears, regardless of whether the engine is switched on or off? Otherwise, we can rule out the problem is caused by the clutch plate.

The only way to try to change gears while the engine is running and my bike is stationary, is to clutch in fully and rev a little. Only then the gear is willing to shift.

Having said that kicking to neutral still isn't a breeze, as when in gear one, revving and kicking up would more likely to land me in gear two instead of neutral. And revving and kicking down from gear two is more likely to get into gear one. This is so because shifting of gears this way can be seem to be quite tight. It is more a matter of "luck" to get neutral.

Also to add, bike is impossible to get into gear six. Only managed to hit gear six once. Come to think of it, it was a very cool day when it was drizzling.

@gnod: Hey nice to see another vanvan rider here, really rare bike. I guess we are facing the same issue. I will try the method you suggested to see if it works on my vv, but for the past rides I am using the revving method as mentioned above, and similarly, does not work all the time.
