Hi, if you read this week's digital life, there was an entry about installing OSX on a low spec netbook.

1. Is that possible? Have anyone tried it?

2. How is the performance? Are there any limitations or bugs or lagginess?

Cause I find this a damn good idea. I want a mac only for its OSX and its iLife and if your comments on trying this is positive, I would do it for myself too, Toshiba Netbook with OSX

Hi guys,

In general and from the back of my head, there are a few things to note:

The lack of a high end graphics card (ATI, NVIDIA, etc...) on these 'cheapo' notebooks means intensive video animations/games/apps will run on native video rendering software on the OS X. iLife is one of em.

In other words, those specific apps will run sluggishly or not run at all.

You can try to install Mac OS X but whether the built-in OS X drivers and hacked-drivers can recognize the netbook's hardware, and actually use it, is a question that can only be answered after the install.

Even after that, it's a matter of finding a hacked/patched version of the drivers on the internet to make specific hardware (that didn't work on OSX the first round) recognised and working.

Since this thread is opened, then i'm interested to know until now anyone tried to install Mac OS on a netbook yet? Searching on internet about all this but cant even start a first step.

I got MSIWINDOSX86.iso, Leopard HD install helper to install the OSX in my S10-2 & S10.

But no response when i boot it.

Hi,

Does this mean your Hack-intosh was working fine and it suddenly quit on you and refuses to boot up?

Where are you seeing this "HFS+ partition error" by the way.

In the meantime, try to scan your hard drive for errors or inconsistencies in the file permissioning.

1. Pop in your install CD if you have one and boot into the Mac OS X installer.

2. Once there, don't continue with the install. Simply click on Utilities in the upper menu bar, and then Disk Utility.

3. In the Disk Utility application, on the left click on your hard drive partition that contains your Mac OS X system.

4. Click "Verify Disk Permissions". If it spits out errors, do a "Fix Disk Permissions". If it complains that it can't access the disk or gives an error and stops, move on to the next step.

5. Click on "Verify Disk". If it tells you that your disk needs to be repaired, click on "Repair Disk".

That's all for now. Awaiting your reply.

Thanks for info.

Initially i cant even boot it, just a "HFS+ Partition Error" msg shown but i still can open my XP. Yesterday, finally i can install Mac OS after it reboot, the same msg come out but this time i cant even open my XP in options. It directly lead me to the "HFS+ Partition Error" msg. I did some research on net and i found the solution like what bro stated.

Main problem now is, I boot it with my ext HDD. Now, it cant recognise the content inside. So i definitely need a MAC DVD now. Anyone got mac install DVD ? Can borrow? :) Now my lappy RIP at home.

I think it's the Darwin bootloader that you're talking about. The white-wordings-on-black-screen screen which lets you select which partition to boot Mac OS X.

HFS+ Partition Error may be that the partition where you want to install 'hackintosh' is not correctly set as HFS+. Formatting your disk is one thing, setting what kind of partition it is -- is another thing. It's like giving your partition a name and information of what kind of partition it's going to be, to put it into simpler words.

You need disk partitioning tools to first set that partition's identifier to HFS Plus **. This way, Darwin won't complain. Next is to run the Mac OS X installer (CD or DVD) and use its inbuilt Disk Utilities tool to format that newly identified partition.

The best practice for me is to have my computer's BIOS (or EFI) control what I wanna boot. Upon PC power-on, I set it to ask me which disk I wanna begin booting from. One HDD contains Windows (and its respective bootloader), and the other is the 'hackintosh' (with its Darwin bootloader). Less hassle, lesser chances of errors or partitioning mistakes.

** If you use Windows based partition software to do this, even they're not Mac aware, you still can do it. Just set that partition to "AF" or "0AFh", save the changes, and the partition is ready to be formatted within a Mac system or installer.

Apple names HFS+ as "Macintosh OS Extended (with Journaling)"

Thanks for advice & info. Really appreciate.
