NWC: Give sustainable pay rise - http://sg.yfittopostblog.com/2010/05/25/nwc-grant-sustainable-wage-rise/

angel on May 25, 2010 at 7:47 pm

From an employee’s point of view, it is definitely time to give more to workers to increase their wage share of the GDP. In Singapore, there is no clear minimum wage requirements, employers are free to pay employees whatever they want, and many employers do not conform to laws stipulating employees’ rights to meal breaks.

To illustrate my point, I refer to my own experiences in Singapore –

I hold a Singaporean passport, grew up all over the world, and have worked and travelled extensively. Recently, I returned to Singapore with my husband who was posted to work here. I searched for employment, and had at least 15 job interviews in a month. My goal was to find out how sought after my skill set is in Singapore. Of the 15 job applications, I was accepted for 14 of the offered positions. It appeared that prospective employers were completely sold on my mixed bag of talent, experience and knowledge. They envisioned the number of ways I could contribute to their company – never discussing how they would contribute to my career development.

Next came the wage negotiations. All employers were willing to pay only the bare minimum, which was less than half of what I would earn in other First World countries such as the States and Australia. Consequently, I lowered my wage expectation to exactly half of my wage in Australia. The outcome was that the highest bidder for my services would pay only two-thirds of my expectation. Granted Singapore has possibly the lowest income tax rate of the First World nations, but affordability is still low compared to those countries. Me and my husband are not allowed to buy a HDB flat as we are just over the income threshold. Yet, to afford a million dollar private apartment is out of our reach.

As a result, we have to rent. We needed to be near our work place in the city, so we went to view apartments in the area. We could not find any private apartment that did not rent for more than my entire wage! The only flats that cost exactly my entire wage, were decrepit HDB flats. In summary, affordability in Singapore is the lowest of any First World country we’ve lived in, the quality of life is deplorable, and there is no work-life balance at all.

In Singapore, I am expected to work 50-hour weeks, get paid for 40, get no overtime pay, work in part of the weekend, and there is no explicit lunch break. In other First World countries, we normally work 38-hour weeks, get paid for every hour of work, get paid overtime pay, take specific meal breaks and have family-time in the weekend.

After working for my highest bidder for 6 months, he found an ingenious solution to his aversion to paying me more than what he thought was fair. He felt that essentially I am holding a Singaporean passport and should be paid the minimum wage that a typical Singaporean would be paid, regardless of my skills, knowledge or expertise. His solution therefore, was to replace me with two other persons sourced from surrounding lower-economic countries. It did not matter that the two who replaced me did not amount to my level of experience and knowledge – the idea of having two workers for the price of one appealed to the typical Singaporean in him.

Perhaps he’s come to such conclusion while sitting in his $500,000 Mercedes (which each family member of his household has a personal one), or while languidly musing over one of his 6 times a week $200 meals, or perhaps lounging in the seat of one of the first-class air passages he takes 5 times a year. All the time I was slogging away, being everything from the office cleaner, receptionist, personal assistant, office administrator, cashier, information disseminator, IT person, sales and marketing person, in addition to the professional role that I was actually hired to do. It was not uncommon to find me answering four phone calls, while replying to emails, directing traffic, collecting money, and attending to the person standing in front of me, all at the same time. After work, if I could get off on-time, I struggle through the crowds rushing to get on the public transport system, to get home. When I finally stagger through the door, I would be too exhausted to do anything other than crash on the couch. And I do this repeatedly 5.5 days a week, just to pay the bills. More frustrating was that there was no formal orientation to the position. You either swam or sank. Is the wage disparity not obvious here? I cannot help but feel vindicated. My comparable profession in other First World nations was nothing like what it is in Singapore.

One would wonder, did my employer really give all the donation he could to charities and contribute all that he could to enrich the lives of the less fortunate? Did he pay his employees a fair wage, and did he ensure he did not increase his negative impact on the world through his consumerism?

There is obviously a big gap between top and bottom earners, judging by the increase in the number of high-end luxury cars on the road. Considering such vehicles are in a price range that is at least 30 times that of an average wage earner, surely the wage gap is more than obvious.

In terms of healthcare, the standard of care I received from the private clinics and hospitals in Singapore, only equates to the standard of care of the public hospitals in First World countries. Yet we have to pay a premium, in cash, out of pocket, at Singapore private clinics and hospitals because the forced-Medisave does not cover most outpatient treatments. In Singapore public hospitals, the standard of care was simply unacceptable. There appears to be an obvious lack of experience and expertise. For a simple knee injury, we presented at a Singapore public hospital 5 different times, paid in cash for a great multitude of tests and medication, only to be told that the doctor has no idea what the problem is or was! In the end, we had to seek treatment from private doctors and pay an average of S$150 per 10 minute consultation.

It is no wonder that the quality and standard of service in Singapore is appallingly dismal. Step into any retail shop, restaurant, or health service, and the person serving you would probably be low-cost labour sourced from neighbouring lower-economic countries. Why hire a Singaporean at full price when you can hire two foreigners at half price? We have found that service staff in Singapore tend to be gruff, unmotivated, disinterested and generally distracted. Who can blame them? Life looks discouraging here. Who knows, I’d probably change my tune if I was on the other end of the wage-earning scale.

Shocked by nurses’wage. I have been away for nearly eight years working in Australia. Just returned to Singapore to continue living here. Having worked for 32 years as a Registered Nurse, my current basic salary is $3300/ month. In Australia I was paid for a 40hr week with an earning of A$3500 fortnightly. The cost of living in both countries are equivalent. The young singaporeans who are currently in the workforce may not be able to buy an HDB unit to live in. This could also be one of the reasons , why there are many singaporeans still remaining single. As parents both my husband and I feel that we need to support our kids through their marriages and futhermore to assist them in buying an HDB unit. I feel that salaries should be tailor made by a specific board governing it. I enquired from a couple of public hospitals with regards to the salaries and they were both different. Why are public hospitals here, are having different salary structure.

YEAH RIGHT!!!! Pure Bullcrap!!! Like the top management of the companies give a crap about National Wages Council (NWC). We lower income earners are all perhaps modern day slaves. Only difference with the olden day slaves are we are given salary to pay for our own food and home and perhaps get mentally abuse rather than physical. It’s a just sick world we are living in, run by the rich and powerful!!!
