Patching/welding fuel tank

I'm having a leak in my fuel overflow pipe which runs through my fuel tank. It is at a level where if i pump more than 10 litres of petrol into the tank the excess will leak out through the overflow pipe, thus limiting how much i can pump and my tank range. My mech's opinion is that the tank will have to be cut open from below, the hole patched and then the tank rewelded closed. My mech is checking with some shop near his place if they can do it but i haven't gotten back to him about it yet.

Has anyone have any advice with regards to this issue or have any recommendations for any shops where i can get it done?
