ok ok..

I'm back...

sorry had the 2 busiest days for some time.

Just DIY changed my clutch plates and it wun respond. While fixing it, I caused the bike to tip over and fall again (Shoei, I owe you a clutch lever now). Had to tow to shop to fix the plates. Turned out TLR K1s need 10 plates instead of usual 9. ARGH!!!! just blew the $70 I was supposed to save with a DIY job on my clutch plates.

SIANZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Burnt $190 when I needed only $120. sigh...

anywayz, I'll get back to Shoei's ignition mod diagram and followed by Biker82. Brb while I go get my fairing up.

Okie guys.

For those interesed, I present the Sparkko mod, as brought to by JarkkoT from Finland.

What is it? A mod to provide direct power from the battery to the the ignition coils.

Benefits? First time starts almost every time no matter what temperature or weather conditions.

Level of difficulty? Very difficult coz it involves a lot of wiring. But do-able if you read thru and really understand its concept. Those who do twin horns for their bikes with a relay will find yourself at home.

Okie, first up, wats the principle behind this mod? Essentially, it involves the bad side about the stock wiring. The power to the ignition coil has to go thru this order:

battery -> main fuse -> rectifier -> ECU -> 3 seperate sensors -> engine cutoff switch -> fuse box before finally reaching your ignition coils. So from 12V, by the time it gets to your ignition coil, it'll be 10.49V (measured by my Hewlett-Packard digital multimeter). Worse if your stock wiring is corroding or aging.

So what is the main solution? A more direct wiring from the battery to the ignition coil.

Problem? A direct wire means the coil will get continuous power and will start up even without your key and will drain the battery fast.

Sub-solution? A relay to control the electric flow.

What is a relay? A relay is a sort of built-in switch which, when powered or given a "signal", will close the switch and allow electrcity to flow thru it.

So what will power the relay? The original stock wiring which goes to the coil. Which is where the genius of the system lay.

Diagram as follows.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v361/tlrwildcard/DIY/Coilmod.jpg

Here's the steps.

From the battery, a wire is crimped to the battery + terminal. This will be the actual power line to the coil. In between the line, a 15A fuse is inserted. Why? It serves as the primary surge protection against the coil. From the fuse, its is attached to the relay to the power input end. At the power output of the relay, attach a wire of sufficient length. At the end, split the wire into 2. What I did was I simply took another 2 sets of wire and formed a Y at the end.

Now, at each ignition coil, there will be 2 wires. One white and one green / orange. The green / orange is the positive one. Have to cut. This is the most riskiest part. Now, strip each end. You will have 4 ends (2 coils mah). The end going towards the coils is to be tied to the wire from the relay (remember the Y junction we created?) One each. Now the coil is receiving a new power source. But it cannot be powered yet.

Now, the other stripped end of wire which comes from the harness is to be extended and attached to the relay. What I did was I formed them together and attached to the relay "signal" terminal.

One more wire is from the relay to your bike frame. This is the ground wire. Without it, the whole thing will NOT work.

So how does it work? Simple. When you turn the key, power from the battery will travel the whole original route until it reaches the part where we cut it. From there, its rerouted to the relay. This is the signal to the relay to close the switch. When the switch is closed, power from the battery will flow thru the new wire, past the 15A fuse, to the relay thru the closed switch, split into the Y junction and into each coil. You get a theoretical 12V direct from battery (but its measured to be lower ard 11+V due to smaller wire).

But what abt safeguards? Well, here's the magic.

1. Power surge thru the original wiring? The original bike fuse or main fuse at the battery will cut off. This will cut off power at the original wiring. Means no signal to the relay. Relay switch will open and power from the battery will cut off. Bike shuts down safely.

2. Power surge thru the new wire? 15A fuse will melt first before any damage can take place, cutting off power to the coil and shutting down the bike.

3. Bike tipped over, sensors indicate bike needs to cut-off, engine cut-off switch closed? Power in the signal wire will be cut off and shut down the bike.

4. Key taken out? Same as point 3.

I did this mod way back in April or May after reading that it can help cold starts. After doing this mod, I've never had any problems starting up in cold mornings. At most have to crank twice. Otherwise can start in one press.

Also, Jarkko reported someone in the forum did a dyno run with and without this mod. An increase of 1.5 HP was discovered.

For the price of less than $10 you get better starts in the morning and a real HP increase. Better than those "fuel-crackers" that some shops are selling... AHAHAHAHAH!!!
