Hi Sev,

Most of your portrait shoots looks more like snapshoot to me. If possible, try to contain less of the background. Many of the shoots are cut off rather abruptly. Perhaps you can go get a 50 f1.8 (ard $180) and trying using f2.2 to f2.8 to get a shallow DOF for Portraits.

As for the landscape, it is generally well executed but try to show more of the sea since there's nothing much left in the sky. The softness is not because of the camera or techniques but becoz of your kit lens. Try to apply USM using Photoshop for a sharper photo.

Hope you enjoy shooting and continue shooting!

Cheers

thanks for your advice, think i need to get the 50mm f/1.8.

i was using f/3.5 all the time, but think it is still too much detail of the background.

any advise on how to get good out door potrait shoot?

i just got myself a basic photographybook from Border, still reading it up.

need to read more to learn how to shoot people.

sometimes i need to use flash and set it fire at -0.7 to brighten up the face, but the effect not so good... i see some photo have natural light on the face even under bright sunlight, they use external flashgun?

me still saving up for the SB-600...

The sea infront of the skyline has a lot of construction boat park there, so i crop them out. What is USM? How to do it with Photoshop?

My photoshop is beginner level only, learn during my school time...

what lens is good for landscape shoot?

You got some good firework shots!

i saw the firework on the bridge last saturday, but too far away for me to shoot, and the trees are blocking half of the firework.

how to shoot fire work? use fast or slow shutter speed? focus where to get the sharpest image?

Actually you can only learn so much from reading. They are plenty of Portraits shoot in CS "Portraits and Poses". This way, you not only learn about composure but also the posture of your subjects. As the saying goes, "A picture speaks a thousand words". Another way to accelerate learning is to join those Paid Model shoot. You'll get to interact and learn from those Pros as well. For candid Portraits, you'll need a longer lens, like the 105 f2.8 where you can stand far enough for the subject not to notice you. While the 70 - 200 or 80 - 200 is a good lens for Portraits, you'll be rather noticeable even among the crowd with your BIG GUN!

Lightings and Flash is a very indepth and knowledgable topic that even I myself is still learning on it. There's quite a number of different flash that can be used on different surroundings. However, Nikon is rather reputable for its flash among the big boys. Read up on the differences btw the SB600 and SB800, which the latter might prove useful to you in the long run.

USM = Unsharp Mask

You can find this under "FILTER" -> "SHARPEN" ->"UNSHARP MASK". Play around with it to see the effects. You'll get better as you use more often. There's a guide in CS that gives step-by-step instructions on how to get the different desire effects.

For landscape, a more suitable (as what i'd call it. All lens are good lens, only dependant on who uses it and how to apply it) lens will be the Wide-Angle lens. There's the Nikon 12-24 f4, Sigma 10-20 f4, Tokina 12-24 f4, Tamaron 12-24 f4. etc. Alternatively, FE (Fisheye) is another fun lens for landscaping.

A good f stop will be btw f8 to f11 with ISO 100. You can do a search in CS to find out the different methods for taking fireworks.

Cheers

IMO, do not go for 3rd party battery grips.

There is no assurance from the manufacturer that the battery grips will not damage your camera. Damage caused by 3rd party products will also void your warranty.

If battery grip is really important to you, perhaps the 350D for Canon or the D200 for Nikon would be more suitable for your usage.

If you can live without it, use the money other items that is more useful (e.g. CF card, EN-EL3a, ML-3, etc.)

Posted

i already bid for the 3rd party battery grip.

I searched through Clubsnap, seems nobody had any problem with 3rd party battery grip so far, so i just bid on it.

350D too small for my palm, D200's price is way off my budget, so both option is out even they have original battery grip (if not i will get 350D before i got my D70s).

I already got 4GB CF card & the remote, will get extra EN-EL3a when my grip arrive.

next week going Batam, hope the grip arrive by then. :D

8th Aug might not be a good day to go for Fireworks shooting. Everywhere will be extremely crowded... Might not even have space to set up tripod unless you are there real early.

hi kurarensu, may be you want to read some book on photographer first.

if you are first time into photography, i suggest you start with normal point and shoot digital camera first.

take as much photo as you can, then when you find that your P&S is limiting you for taking better picture, then it is the time to upgrade to DSLR.

I starter with film SLR, then drop it due to cost. then Canon Ixus 40 then now D70s.

what is your budget for camera? The new Nikon D80 is coming out soon, may be you can consider that too.

beginner DLSR cost from $1200 ~ $2000+

btw, just received my grip from Ebay.

Tested all function, no problem using 2 EN-EL3As & 6 AA batteries.

Able to auto focus with the vertical shutter release button without the need to activate remote control function.

But the build is not that good, cheapo plastic... will gaffer it up when my tape arrive.

Bought at $132.

u should gaffer the cable linking the grip to the body.

if not, it will be very troublesome and come into your way while shooting.

worst.. it will get hook into something and might drop yr cam.

btw, horizoner... i guess i should sms u.... lol.

horizoner & Scud;

ya, the wire very disturbing, will tape it up when i got my tape.

when wanna go out shoot together again?

just back from Batam, a boring place, nothing to do there...

kurarensu

get the film SLR and use it for 20 yrs, get DSLR and new model comes out every 2 yrs...

i used to shoot film, but it is too expensive to buy film + develop, and it is expensive to do testing shot...

camera doesn't take photo itself, so when the picture came out not good, it is the photographer fault. buying expensive camera doesn't mean we will get good photo. buy somethign within your budget or get a 2nd hand one.
