Just realised that, the photos from my D70 (Tamron 17~35 F2.8 ED) is not really that sharp, compare to my friend's D50 (Nikkor 18~55 F2.8), the image is sharp and color and rich.

What is the likely problem? Camera or the len?

Anyone got a good nikkor lens for me to verify ?

:help:

Hi Bro,

I believe you are referring to the Nikkor 17-55 f2.8 DX lens.

Likely Problem? Confirm it is a lens issue. One is produced by Nikon and the other, a third party lens. For sharper image quality, always go for the original (Nikkor). However, the price is always 2 to 3 times costlier than 3rd party lens.

If you are looking for a sharp lens, go get the Nikkor AFS 17-35 f2.8. This is one piece of trinity and classic that gives sharp photos! You can use this lens with the FF (full-frame) or film camera as well.

If you foresee yourself using mainly digital (excluding Full frame digital) and zoom is more important to you, then get the Nikkor 17-55 f2.8.

Cheers

There's no good brand to start photography.

It is dependant on the user to decide his preferences and the functions he require. The most common brand of DSLR is either the Canon or Nikon. For entry level DSLR, the Canon has the 350D and the Nikon D50. It is best to narrow down to 2 models and then go try out which feels better in your hand.

I shant talk about the film SLR since I believe you have handled only P&S film camera. There are many photographers out there whom still prefer film over digital.

Hope you enjoy your stay here.

Cheers

my personal experience with this fella.. 18-200VR with S3Pro as below.

the VR works flawlessly. i tested with a friend. he was pushing and pulling me ard while i was taking the shots. shots taken at 200mm. 100% hit in continous mode.

i think it is lighter than my 70-200 f2.8 (lens alone, btw i'm canon user).

on your question abt the orig vs 3rd party lens, the colour reproduction is better frm the orig lens. another thing that most ppl tends to overlook is their choice of UV filter. most ppl thinks that UV filters merely cuts UV rays & as a form of protection to the front elements. i choose to differ. u can try comparing hoya/tokina filter with B+W, Nikon LC and NC. cheap UV filters not only cut UV rays, but also introduce some colour cast, thus making the colours dull.

I think it would be better if you can do a comparison btw the 2 lenses at the same spot, same time using a tripod. Take the photo at the widest angle and at the max. zoom. After that enlarge it to 100% and crop out one of the corners and one from the centre of your image.

Btw, your 2nd pix looks alittle under on my screen.

True, the 18-200 is alot lighter than the 70-200 f2.8 (Nikon and Canon weighs a ton for this lens!). I'd say its a very versatile lens for walkaround (e.g. going for tour). It saves the hassle of luggin many lens of different range and adds weight to our laugguage.

The body (S3Pro) which you coupled to with a 18-200 is a perfect match given that S3 produces high contrast.

I fully agree with you on the UV filters. As much as I like to stick to Nikon lens (for Nikon bodies), I stick to the original Nikon filters as well.

if not for S3Pro slow speed, i would have bought it... or maybe sub$1.5K (i wish..heheh)

the dynamic range of S3Pro is no doubt the best i hv seen.

can even get the correct skin tone after 4-stops overexposed (in RAW).

scud, superb shot man!!! where did you shoot the firework? your shooting place can cover the CBD and Esplanade, very good location.

Pauche, think we are shooting at the same place at Tanjong Rhu.

I'll go there again this Friday (skip my class...), wanna go together?

If time permits, why not?

But I was thinking of trying out another location so that I'll have a different view/angle. Which other location have you tried shooting?

SLR = Single Lens Reflex Camera

DSLR = Digital Single Lens Reflex Camera

P&S = Point and Shoot

P&S and DSLR? Main difference is the size of sensor. P&S sensor is much smaller than a DSLR and thus, DSLR can capture more details, etc. DSLR allows you to change lens (which may be very troublesome for some) to suits the different type of photography (e.g. macro, landscape, events, etc). DSLR gives you more control over P&S (though some prosumer gives these modes as well). DSLR also gives you more headache over which lens to buy and how not to buy buy buy.

Erm... I would recommend to wait for the newly launch D80 if you can. If really budget constraint, go for a D70s which you can find alot in the 2nd hand market. With the launch of the D80, prices for D70s should come down by abit.

To begin with, these are mandatory items

1.) DSLR (new or used)

2.) Lens (kit lens should do just fine)

3.) UV Filter (Cheap can set you for $20 or so but good ones ard $60)

4.) Flash (new preferred)

5.) Camera Bag (new or used)

6.) CF/ SD cards

7.) Spare Battery (for camera and Flash)

8.) Dry cabinet

9.) Tripod and ballhead

Budget should be ard $2k to $3.5k depending on whether you are getting new or used items.
