hi guys,

both me and my gf are pretty interested into photography. rite now, we are only using p&s and picking up skills along the way.

we are thinking of investing in a DSLR. but we have no idea which one to get. there are simply too many in the market. our budget is 2k for the whole set.

someone did reccm to us a canon 30D thou.

we saw the above mentioned DSLR in newyork gg for 1500usd, but becoz we were not familar with the current local prices, so we did not commit. and also, the lenses that came with it, we were not sure if it was standard package. to cut the long story short, we didnt have time to do our homework on the canon 30D.

wat wld be a good DSLR for amateurs?

and what type of technical specs shld we look out for?

and where wld be the best place to get?

below are some shots we took on our p&s.

pardon our amateur shots.

too many jostling and elbows.furthurmore, we had no tripod.

pity, the view was really nice and the pics doesnt do it any justice.

Can't view the pics. Anyway Canon 350D is a pretty good DSLR to start with, its predessor 300D was the one which set the benchmark for budget DSLR a few years ago.

fooz, if you are in USA, look at this site http://www.kenrockwell.com

lots of info on Nikon camera.

Both Nikon & Canon is equally good, depends your personnal liking.

Beginner take Nikon D80 or Canon 400D, both newly launch last month.

i got D70s due to it size, fit my palm well, 350D too small for my liking.

30D is mid end DSLR, not suitable for beginner because you can't / dunno how to fully utilise its function.

why pay more for something you will no use?

spend your $ on D80 body + Nikkor 18-200mm VR. pretty good zoom range and with VR, you can handheld 1/15 sec and still get sharp pics...

good luck for your DSLR hunting.

oh ya, new DSLR comes out every year, so dont wait, get one suits you and start shooting now.

i'm saving for that too...

hi fooz,

buying a dlsr is abt buying a system.

therefore, before u decide which system to go with, do search the web for info.

go http://www.dpreview.com .

an anology will be like buying a share in the stock market.

i would suggest you to check out the lenses lineup of all brands. this will

at least tell you what u need in future and how much it cost for

upgrade when u r ready to push the boundary.

there are also some 3rd party lenses that can be bought at a fraction of the

price of an original brand, and also delivers up to a certain acceptance degree

of quality.

after all the facts finding, u can at least focus on few models.

u may want to go for entry level or mid-level dslr.

with a budget in mind, u might need to restrict your spending not only to

dslr+kit lens, but also some extra batts, CF cards, external flash

& some necessities. best if u can get a set with freebies thrown

in (eg; tripod, bag, cleaning kit, CF etc) which at least save

you some money.

there are so many features built-in to any brand of dslr, to name a

few - anti shake, high ISO rating, fast startup etc.

so choose the best dslr that fits your budget and your liking.

happy hunting for a dslr.

doing some practice shots, so i noe wat i really want in the functions.

wat i dun raeli like is the zoom. its not manual. ie, thrs a zoom level, which u toggle, instd of manually twisting it.

btw, scud, u mentioned abt lenses. so how do i choose the lens? say i wana take macro obj. thr are sme numbers, which i dun reali understd.

wat will be a good lens to begin with?

there are many lenses to begin with if you have deep pocket.

else, a kit lens will be good to kick start your hobby.

Thanks... am i right to say that 20D and 30D only diff is the LCD size and buffer memory?

i hv not tried these 2 dslrs extensively (20d vs 30d), but what say is based on literature comparison.

the diff not only as u mentioned, but there are more.

See below link for Canon EOS 30D vs. EOS 20D feature and specification differences.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos30d/

if u ask me between these 2, i would go for 30D.

reasons are simply because spot metering & better buffer (in this order).

another option is getting a 10d, which i still think it can delivers most what 20d/30d can do. it is very cheap for a second hand set, sub $1K, even thou the buffer is not as high as 30d.
