Hi, I am riding a honda nsr sp. My bike have problems to start. Evrytime when i leave my bike after riding for aprox-(3-4 hrs or so) i will need to pull the choke to start my bike. Not only that, i need to retain and hold the pulling of the choke for quite a few seconds, because if i put the choke back to its original position, the RPM will decrease and the bike will shut down by itself and i need to start doing the pulling of choke and start the bike again.

Another thing is, after i hold the choke for quite a second(10 or so) if i quickly throttle(while its neutral), RPM will eventually decrease and engine will shut down.

Is there any problem with the bike? Or izzit tunning problem??? Throttle immediately after pulling choke sounds like very thick air cuming out.

I know pulling the choke every time is not good. Can any of you riders out there help me???

Appreciate the help alot ppl!

Any shop good to understand this problem guys?

might be carburetor jetting problem, maybe worn out or size not matching.... besides SP is an old bike, some bike lan lan have to pull choke everyday when starting bike....

my sp also the same, need to pull choke for ard 10 sec or so after a cold start.... then just let the bike warm up for 2 min or so and your good to go....

Cheap + fast = no good

Cheap + good = not fast

Good + fast = not cheap

Choke is the On , Off , Reserve? ps i noob

Choke got on, off n reserve meh?? That is Fuel Knob. Choke is either pull or push for SP. Other Carbs maybe lift up or down.

why not good to pull choke and throttle when cold start?.

On a carb bike, the choke is just a mechanical flap that restricts the air-flow to richen the fuel/air ratio.

There is absolutely no side effect of using choke to start the bike.

its not good coz ur bike will be "depending" on choke when start.. which is not good. coz a healthy bike will start just a few kick.. so using choke i think will make us un aware of our bike condition? just my 5cent

You are equating the bike to be like a human being with memory and learning ability.

Mush as I agree that a correct tuned bike should be able to start without using the choke but there is definitely no side-effect for using it. The choke is part of the bike, use it if you have to. Carbs are difficult, if it is tuned to start without choke, after warming up, it could idle abit too high. If you want the bike to idle within specs, you may have to use the choke to start.

Cars with ECU have auto-choke, so is that also no good ?

But usually when you just buy a first hand bike. Dont have to use choke right? Or it's the same need to pull e choke? :cheeky:

Let me give you an extreme example

If the bike is built and tested in japan during summer at sea level, then the bike is exported to Alaska during winter where the rider lives at 1000 feet above sea level, then the bike will have a hard time starting without choke even if the bike is brand new.

If you bike has problem starting every morning, and you die die want to start without choke. Then check the air/fuel adjustment is accessible on your carb. However there is a limit to how much you can play with your air/fuel ratio. Then you may have to change your jetting needles.

If the bike needs choke to start but runs fine after starting, keep it that way unless you want to spend unnecessary money, and I can tell you there are not many mechanics around with good carb knowledge. Your bike could end up worse once you let an inexperienced mechanics to trial and error.

Kopitiam example - I have done far worse things to my bikes than using the choke. Super rich mixture, super lean mixture, super high temperatures, water injection, etc etc. Didn't explode, didn't give one bit trouble. Thus, pulling the choke to start it won't hurt it.

The choke is there to help you start, as aforesaid, so use it if you need it, leave it, understand it, for when you need it otherwise. If it were actually dangerous, vehicle engineers and OEM carb manufacturers won't design a choke circuit into the carburettor in the first place :3

agree with what kalyan said... if it was harmful to the bike to use choke, when why would they put it there in the first place?

first hand bike is fresh from the factory so everything is new so should start without choke... bear in mind SP is a 10 year ++ old bike so cannot expect it to be in factory new condition unless you want to replace every thing in your engine...

Cheap + fast = no good

Good + fast = not cheap
