This is my 5th year, but I think will be my last. Firstly, the crowd for 10km this year was huge. I don't know how to describe it but previous years just did not seem so bad as this year. And there were many non-runners in the 10km this year and it was made worse by bottlenecks at certain points. I just don't recall the route being this bad previously. Also, there were a total of 3 water points along the 10km route, and while this would have been sufficient, the sun that day was extremely hot. Because the bag drop was crowded and was not at the usual place as the previous years (muddy ground, had to go underpass to get to it), arriving 7.15am at the venue meant that I could only get flagged off with the later batch at around 8.15am... by then sun was up and again, this was one of the worst heat ever encountered. The entire experience was a bad one, and considering I've taken part in many 10Kms over the years, I think Stanchart organisation getting bad to worst, but perhaps this is inevitable since they keep increasing the participation count yearly.

systemx: Agree with you totally... I ran the 42 and there were wayyyy too many walkers, the keep left route fell on deaf ears, and many of the runners had to zip in and out between...

They changed to a drink station every 3km, even for 42, and random tiger balm rubs and banana stations.... Drinks station were messed up, don't know is it the fault of runners or organizers, whole place was badly littered, and runners who wanted a drink had to stop....

The bag drop can't comment as I didn't chance it with waiting time being 1 hr and had to walk all the way back to F1 side.... especially in afternoon sun....

and the best part, i finished the race in just under 7 hours, and when got to the shirts collection heard them announcing,

"No more L and M, only left S, XS, XL, and xXL.." every year same problem but every year don't want change... lucky i XL..... I'd be pissed if after running and i had no more shirts.........

my first marathon, probably my last too, not sure if shd try sundown, heard its better

Well Icomeforyou, I can at least understand the hoggers for 10km since that attracts the less-serious, but even for 42km you had these inconsiderates? Seriously, I just don't understand why SO MANY PEOPLE can't have the decent courtesy to keep to the sides if they are walking. Worse still if you have a bunch of friends all walking in 1 line talking to each other which is what I encountered several times... seriously, us Singaporeans never do anything unless it's written down as a rule, so I hope next year organisers make a ruling for walkers to keep left or at least to the sides. Anyway, I should not bother as I doubt I will be taking part ever again. Slowly this event will turn away the serious runners and attract those in it who just want to WALK!

try to go sub 6 or 5 and u shall have no problem getting the shirt u want. In fact most of the runs, most of the ppl wun stick to the keep left rule cox stinkies mah.

Drink stations hor, they actually mixed lots of water with 100 plus, eventually, u're drinking more of plain water den 100+ during the run.

This yr 2010 sundown was a cock up 1, not sure abt next yr, but I've already secured a slot. :)

Pls don't tailgate or stalk moi.:thumb:

Haha it seems maybe marathon really very hard to organize.. My friend did caution me that the in demand sizes were all M and L, so luckily didn't affect me =S Or maybe after getting shirt this year, stop running altogether already =P after all that was the reason I ran , to earn that shirt =P

Surely the most well-earned shirt ever! Unfortunately I have never been a long distance runner. In school I was a sprinter, so now 10km is already considered long distance for me. If I tried 42km, I'm quite sure i'd end up in a coffin.

Yes, lots and lots of walkers in the 10k... I felt as if I was doing the pylon slalom.

A friend of mine was tripped up by a runner 40 min into the run, and now she is on crutches.

Also, there were a total of 3 water points along the 10km route, and while this would have been sufficient, the sun that day was extremely hot.

At one of the water points, I recall there were bottles littered all over the place (F1 grandstand) yet there were no obvious places to get water, I asked a volunteer and he passed me his own bottle of water... kudos to him... but still i found it a bit odd

Oh no that's really bad. That's why for the sake of safety I think future marathons need to implement some "keep to the sides if you are walking" ruling.

Now that you mention it, that last stretch along the F1 grandstand was like a desert. I recall that's where I almost collapsed from heat exhaustion. There was no shade in sight and I don't remember seeing any water points at all.... so no water points for the last 2-3km.... and I recall seeing the bottles littered everywhere and thinking that I was going to complain about the logistics because the sun was playing tricks on my mind and I kept thinking that the waterpoint was shifted to the other half or full marathon because they were needed there instead.... now when I think about it sounds so stupid... but still WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO THE WATERPOINT THERE???

Yeappp it was actually pretty horrible, I think most of the paths converge nearing the end so the logistics was a pretty bad nightmare, the only water point was just like under benjamin sheares bridge was it? and there was insufficent cups, and insufficent crew trying to escape from the sun as well...

The ECP side also quite bad, banana stations at one point was out and nearing the end of the ECP there was a banana station with no table and crew, just cartons there.. So we just raided it =S not too proud but at that point it was really needed.

And yeap, the shirt was well earned though really appreciate it :p

Thankfully didn't check in luggage if not would have to walk all the way back to F1 side... whew~

i ran 2007 42km and IMO marathons have slowly changed from something that was initially quite a feat to do, to something that now anyone can do. tell anyone that you completed a marathon now and most probably they have did at least one as well. too much commercialization already and i must say stanchart is really capitalizing on this so well although the quality of the event leaves much to be desired.

I stopped taking part partly due to the logistical problems (and also due to ITB flare-ups). Their horrible baggage collection system is legendary and the runs are simply getting too crowded!!! There was one year where the drink stations were serving water IN PLASTIC BOTTLES. Not only did runners have to struggle to twist the cap open, a lot of water was left undrank, and the bottles were tripping people! We ended up hurling the bottles far far away to stop adding to the litter. The following year they switched to paper cups.

Drinks station every 3K is nuts especially if you are doing 42K. You'd be running in the hot sun and dying of water!

Really the 10K and 20K races got to start earlier!

Glad to see I didn't imagine all these things... I think next year I'm taking up rock climbing instead. Running can do anytime on my own, and the whole point of communal running is moot with the logistics and organization situation getting bad to worse.

Oh cool, you wanna learn rock climbing? Do post if any updates ya? =P want to learn a new sport and rock climbing sounds fun, should help with training for IPPT too.. my chin ups =( chui..............
