bros out there...just bought myself a second hand 1150gs...was riding it few days n i kinda find it to be quite noisy esp the shaft area...normal?

Told by ex owner that he just serviced the bike including the gear oil...

Some bolts on the rims also found rusted...Other than that i guess its fine...

Need help from u guys...

1. Should i go for a full service again cos i sumhow dun wan to risk it?

2. Is it normal for the shaft area to vibrate n to be noisy?

3. Should i go to PML which qoute me roughly 450++ for a 60000k servicing OR go to other bikeshop like Loois?

Really appreciate if u guys can help me out here...

Regards

Hiya,

Had my 1150 for a while now, perhaps I can help some. Personally I find that owning a beemer can be cheap or ex. Cheap if you service it yourself for simple jobs, ex if you bring to the agent, but you do get a nice service history. Servicing a beemer means a 5k mineral oil change, with every 10k more stuff like filters, fluids flushing etc.

The usual people who services beemers are (of course) PML, and Perfection Motors (at Ubi) as well as Stamford (at Autopoint). Combine Motors seems to do continental bikes including beemers, and I have seen beemers being serviced at Looi. Actually beemers (especially 1150 and earlier) are machines with a simple engine.

Fitting accessories is also another thing that can affect cost, can fit loads gadgets or just ride stock. Some accessories, like Y-pipe, to me makes a lot of difference. The RTs has a nice fairing, but it means removal for access. Generally the RTs are lower, easier to ride, tho broader because of panniers.

Generally beemer parts last, and hence to me they provide "value" in that sense. Some parts like the Hall effect sensor will go between 3 to 5 years, regardless of usage, apparently. Common wear and tear parts are available at PML almost immediately, other parts within a month. Part numbers and schematics are available online.

Wonderful thing about owning a BMW is that you are buying not just the bike, but the knowledge that parts are available.

Sorry for the rambling, but I love beemers.

Cheers

Have you been to Perfection Motor or Loois before? Visit both shop and see how comfortable you are with them.

All mech should have the min skill to repair your bike, don't worry too much. BMW used to manufacture plane but not now, so your beemer wont be as complicated as a A380.

Cheers...

Daily comfort ride... may I suggest Vespa GT200 or the latest GTV250... it is the most comfortable daily/city ride of my life...

Aiyo, we are just being helpful... you wanted a comfortable daily transport bike but you didn't mentioned that you need a BMW bike mah, what abt BMW C1? Alamak, me KP to suggest another... sorry...

Guess Nakano and I don't think tt a big fat bike like RT can be comfortable in Spore road... just our opinion lah... if you set your mind to get a RT, why ask and if your question is if RT a comfortable bike to ride? The answer will be rather redundant... cos... RT is definitely one of the most comfortable bike on earth...

Ya, dunno why we beemer lovers also like scooters. For me cos' like beemers, no chain hence no maintenance. Unlike beemers, small and easy to squeeze traffic, can carry cargo without panniers.

The push-up bra mentioned by XM is a private joke, yes, that pair growing on me. :cheeky:

Anyway, between Looi and Perfection I would choose Alan of Perfection cos' frankly he is a good mechanic with a history of working on boxers and continental bikes. It is probably more worth it to go to him first time, get it right than try several shops (who will later blame the rest for messing the job up). Alan strikes me as a no-nonsense chap.

I go to Stamford, but that is because I tend to tinker with my bike (on top of the PML 10k services). Alex of Stamford knows his stuff but tends to be slow (and I mean seriously slow). Now like more of a friend with him than a mechanic / customer relationship.

Comfort commute in Singapore on a beemer? hmmm, generally all beemers are comfy, the RTs more so than some. We haven't rule out a Dakar (which is a beemers too)? The old R1100Rs are really affordable now, and age for a beemer is really not much of an issue.

There I go rambling again .. these bikes really get me going.

Cheers

RT is a beemer what... but a beemer might not be a RT... :cheeky:

The RT is a comfortable bike to ride with its upright position. I also had a chance to be pillion on the bike when the ex-owner rode me to LTA to do the transfer. Never had much chance to be pillion rider so do not have comparison, but overall I felt comfortable throughout the trip, would have been better if the bike came with a top box with pillion back rest.

There's a RT with lots of accessories for sale... check this out...

Sorry, me bad. Yes, the F650GS or 650 Dakars are also beemers, I've neglected them because to me, traditionally a beemer is boxer-engined. I am sure you know that now there's K-series (in-line) and F-series (singles and parallel twins) beemers too.

I can't comment on the difference between maintenance for a boxer-beemer and the other series, simply because i do not know. I think all boxers have similar maintenance schedules.

For a pillion, any beemer with a back box should be great for a pillion, in terms of comfort for pillion, I would rate:

RT

GS or R (with box)

GS or R (without box)

S

C

Go for RT, man .... good height (even for short-ass like me), comfortable, great for pillion. BTW, what sort of budget you looking at?

Cheers

Just sent my bike to where the previous owner used to send...That is Loois... seems that the chief mechanic is always busy...so many big bikes there...Sp far workmanship quite good...At least he didnt try to eat my money. He tried to help me cut cost on unnecessary things that i tot is damage or unservicable...next service will try perfection...

Skip, can post on the workmanship n cost of serviing your beemer there?

Ya i am very tempted in the RT ..... i have PM Yem_Paul before ... The drawback abt that bike is ..... i prefer the triangular shape headlight not the squarish.

It might be the older model i presume.

Budget wise ... depends on me....if i think its worth buying ... i will buy.
