This is the first picture of the near-finished version of BMW's new superbike which has appeared after the motorcycle was caught testing in Spain.

You can read our full story on the stunning new 1000cc motorcycle in Motorcycle News, on sale Wednesday 20 February, including photos of both the road and race versions of the new 190bhp machine.

Production street version will be out by years' end I heard.... so that they can go racing in 2009.... new rule, now its 3000 production model to qualify for race homologation, so lets see how its priced.

Hello everyone.

This is a rather interesting thread.

A few misconceptions that need to be laid to rest... I've been riding an R1100GS (1994 model) that I bought for around $6000 for about one year now. Here are my experiences and feedback.

1) The shaft drive doesn't do anything to harm the handling. And yes, the bike can loft the front wheel with some throttle and clutch action in first gear.

2) The flat twin (Boxer) engine has perfect primary balance, but a slight torque reaction which is only apparent at a standstill. As the revs rise, the torque reaction isn't apparent.

3) BMWs are not expensive to service. I handle most of the stuff myself. Parts are also affordable; a signal light holder cost me only $11 to replace when it cracked, and I replaced it in 15 minutes using the tools in the BMW toolkit. You can use car oil in the engine (it's got a dry clutch) so that's cheap too. Also there are plenty of mechanics outside of PML who can service BMW motorcycles. However, anything electronic or engine related is best left to the dealer, since they have the factory tools and all their work carries a warranty.

4) A buddy who dropped his GS at 60km/h replaced only his handlebar and nothing else. So these bikes are pretty tough. I've abused my GS a fair bit; it's been to Lorong Halus and Punggol trails and came out OK.

5) I've ridden many of the best handling bikes around (VFR750, GSXR750) and the worst (NV400 Custom, RD350F2) and I can safely say the BMW is the *best* handling of the lot. It's heavy, though and is difficult to push around. But it's very maneuverable once on the move. As mentioned above, the GS can also handle some off roading if you care for it.

6) As far as the price of the bike is concerned, my machine is a perfect example. I spent about $6k buying it; it's a 1994 machine and had 130,000km when I got it. It was in good condition and had some useful accessories on it. I spent $2000 on it and it now runs superbly; it starts every day without fail and manages about 20km/l with gentle riding. This is far better than my VFR750 which cost me the same, but about $3000 to restore and I had to deal with the lousy parts agents who couldn't even order parts from Japan for me.

That's all I've got to say. No regrets buying my GS. It's old, but it runs well and never lets me down. And best of all, it was super cheap!

Putting it mildly ... :)

5) I've ridden many of the best handling bikes around (VFR750, GSXR750) and the worst (NV400 Custom, RD350F2) and I can safely say the BMW is the *best* handling of the lot. I thot the VFR750 is a very good machine, some say even better than the later versions. Not that many in Singapore, right?

Cheers

Mr Wu's favorite is the R90S but since it is no longer available, he created some accessories for the new R1200R...
